Androgynous Male Model Andrej Pejic Works a Push-Up Bra

"Did I ever think I had enough booty to advertise a push-up bra?

"Did I ever think I had enough booty to advertise a push-up bra? No," androgynous male model Andrej Pejic tweeted earlier today. The Australian gender bender recently signed a lingerie ad contract with Dutch retailer Hema and shot these ads for the chain's push-up bra.

Ignoring possible enhancements via photoshop or bra stuffing, the ad's approach has some logic to it. If the push-up bra can give a man some realistic curves, why not you? And perhaps casting an androgynous man in a commercial ad, and not just an edgy editorial, also represents a progressive step against rigid gender norms.

Still, not everyone thinks these ads send a positive message. Critics in the Netherlands reportedly worry they could negatively influence a young woman's body image by holding up a literally boyish figure (minus the fake cleavage) as the ideal. Considering both arguments, do you think the ad is awesome or problematic?

Earlier this year, the fashion industry was fixated with transgendered and androgynous models like Jana K., Lea T., and Andrej Pejic who have appeared on runways, magazine covers, and fashion campaigns.

Earlier this year, the fashion industry was fixated with transgendered and androgynous models like Jana K., Lea T., and Andrej Pejic who have appeared on runways, magazine covers, and fashion campaigns. Today, New York magazine released its Fall fashion issue featuring Andrej Pejic in shirtless stance similar to the one he posed for Dossier magazine a couple months back. That issue received much controversy after Barnes & Noble demanded that Dossier's publishers hide the cover in an opaque plastic bag, but it seems like New York magazine is having no issues with flashing Andrej Pejic's shirtless cover on newsstands today. Tell us, do you think androgyny is still an interesting topic, or are you over it?

Androgynous Male Model Bends Gender Rules

Australian male model Andrej Pejic covers New York Magazine's Fall fashion issue, but at first glance (if you ignore the masculine chest) you may think it's a beautiful female model on the cover, and rightly so.

Australian male model Andrej Pejic covers New York Magazine's Fall fashion issue, but at first glance (if you ignore the masculine chest) you may think it's a beautiful female model on the cover, and rightly so. Andrej has taken androgynous modeling to a whole new level, as he walks runways as both men and women interchangeably and is mistaken for a woman on a daily basis thanks to his extremely feminine features, affinity for women's clothing, and long, blond locks. But Andrej has a very unique view of gender that doesn't fall under the comfortable categories we're used to like transgender, drag queen, or cross-dresser. Andrej explains his "situation" (as he calls it) in his interview with the magazine; here are some of his thoughtful points on expanding our perception of male vs. female:

  • "When I started experimenting, it was to make myself feel happy, to look in the mirror and be satisfied. I never did drag or anything like that. It was always that I wanted to be pretty, to look beautiful, as a girl would want to."
  • "It's not like, 'Okay, today I want to look like a man, or today I want to look like a woman.' I want to look like me. It just so happens that some of the things I like are feminine."
  • "I know people want me to sort of defend myself, to sit here and be like, 'I'm a boy, but I wear makeup sometimes.' But, you know, to me, it doesn't really matter. I don't really have that sort of strong gender identity—I identify as what I am."
  • "You know, I wouldn’t say that I'm really a sexual person. But I do appreciate love, and I would love to experience it someday. I don't think I have yet."
  • "Obviously, as a kid you'd think about it—What would life be like if I was born a girl? and stuff. But at this point, I'm happy with the situation as it is."

Check out more images of Andrej now, including his controversial "topless" magazine covers. And tell us, what do you think of his perspective on gender? Do you agree?

Andrej Pejic on Being Compared to Lea T

>> At the forefront of fashion's current obsession with androgyny?

>> At the forefront of fashion's current obsession with androgyny? Transgender Givenchy muse and model Lea T — who intends to have gender reassignment surgery — and Jean Paul Gaultier muse Andrej Pejic, who has said he would have a sex change operation for Victoria's Secret. Pejic weighs in on how he feels about the inevitable comparisons: "Well I don’t think my situation and Lea T's are completely different when it comes to our personal lives, but that’s personal, for me at least. And I really think people should stop trying to categorize me because of their need for labels. When it comes to our professional lives, well she only does women’s wear and I think I cover more fields. Some people in the industry will use us in a very similar way to represent similar ideas and some will want me to be a bit different from her – more androgynous, more boyish or even sex-less rather than womanly. I think professionally I am capable of being very versatile." [Stylecaster]

Andrej Pejic Would Get a Sex Change Operation for a Victoria's Secret Contract

>> Over the weekend, Andrej Pejic walked for Jean Paul Gaultier, and backstage, he added that he may have one more appearance at a "big show" in the works. What else does he have up his sleeve? "With all this publicity, there's definitely been a wide array of options. Maybe a movie, maybe some stuff on TV. Every great high-fashion career, if you want to go beyond it, it has to be commercialized." And would he ever get a sex change operation, complete with breast augmentation? "Yes, if I was offered a Victoria's Secret contract. You'd have to, wouldn't you. I couldn't imagine doing it any other way, but at this point I'm comfortable with the way I am now." [Telegraph UK]

"Yes, if I was offered a Victoria's Secret contract. You'd have to, wouldn't you? I can't imagine doing it any other way. But, at this point I'm comfortable with who I am now."

— Androgynous model Andrej Pejic told reporters at Paris Fashion Week that he'd consider getting a sex change for the rare honor of a Victoria's Secret contract. Considering he's already walking in shows like Jean Paul Gaultier, he might not have to.
