Burberry Prorsum Pre-Fall 2013

While other designers have been letting their clothes get farther and father away from the body, Christopher Bailey has been busy bringing Burberry's lines closer to the curves.

For the women's side of his Pre-Fall 2013 collection, that meant body-hugging everything: dresses, skirts, sweaters, and even the house's signature outerwear. It was forthrightly sexy stuff, especially the cocktail dresses sewn on top of mesh bodices. There was a definite tinge of a professional-grade luxury as well; perhaps that idea was best expressed in a coat with fur on top and camel below the waist, and in slim pencil skirts that stopped right at the knee.

For the boys, Bailey seemed a little more carefree. Shirts in a heart print stood alongside sweatshirts with cartoon versions of a London police officer or a Royal Guardsman at Buckingham Palace, all of which added a little humor to the collection. And while there were no shortage of topcoats and trenches here, the most notable piece of outerwear was a motorcycle jacket lined with mink. How decadent — and cool — is that?

    Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013 | Runway

This season, Christopher Bailey's never-ending quest for inspiration via the Burberry archives yielded a century-old image of capes and, believe it or not, corsets. The result was a sassy lineup that referenced both — and it came slickly packaged in an array of high-shine, candy-colored hues.

The label's signature trench coat was reimagined in sateen, lace, leather, metallic, and plastic, while bright berry, kelly green, electric blue, and fiery copper gave the collection a playful edge. Standout pieces were dresses and coats cut in corset-like silhouettes; with the addition of boning, they felt sexy and fresh.

Emma tucked her navy-and-olive striped blouse into a black ruffled pencil skirt, then slipped on a pair of red patent Brian Atwood pumps and a turquoise statement necklace to seal her stunning Seoul style. Perfectly sleek locks, a few gold Jennifer Meyer accessories, and au naturel makeup polished off her impeccable look. Wearable, well-tailored clothing in rich colors made up the bulk of Christopher Bailey's Resort 2013 collection for Burberry. "We played with textures and prints and wove trench references, sartorial detailing and these little hints of corsetry throughout the evening dresses, suiting and our iconic outerwear," Christopher Bailey, Burberry's chief creative officer explained. To that end, women's trousers feature paper-bag waists and pleating, and the shapes and variations on the house's functional knitwear have an updated spin. The same can be said of the men's selection, which features lightweight suits, seersucker pants, and cotton poplin shirts. But it's the color palette of the collection — which ranges from metallic gold and dusty rose for ladies to royal blue and rich olive for the boys — that give the collection a luxurious depth and feel.

    Burberry Prorsum Fall 2012

Burberry took a walk on the quirky side for Fall 2012.
    Burberry Prorsum Fall 2012

Burberry took a walk on the quirky side for Fall 2012. Stripes, bow-tie belts, owl-print tops, and bomber jackets made an appearance, sometimes layered together for something that was like Christopher Bailey's take on street style. It was a definite departure from past collections that hung purely in the sleek and sophisticated category. This collection felt younger, almost teen-like. Individually, there are covetable pieces, like the cropped bombers and the owl sweaters. Arguably the biggest show of London Fashion Week finished on a sweetly dramatic note: faux snow, which fell from the ceiling, while the models walked underneath with pretty umbrellas.

    • Trends: Cropped jackets, peplum, military.
    • Colors: Mustard, brown, wine, hunter green.
    • Key Piece: Cropped bomber jackets are a must own.
    • Accessories: Oxford heels, doctor bags, cute umbrellas, bow belts.
    • Who Would Wear It: Girls with a quirky approach to ladylike style; think Zooey Deschanel.

    >> Christopher Bailey's Burberry girl goes on a little jaunt to the English countryside for Fall 2012. While the collection may have been heavy on classic menswear fabrics — herringbone, tweeds — and utilitarian detailing, this collection was 100 percent femme. Skirts were adorned with ruffles or bows, waists were nipped in, and a peplum or flare accentuated nearly every hip. "I like taking familiar elements — the field jacket, the quilted jacket, the trench — and respecting them but making them modern," Bailey explained of his Downton Abbey-meets-downtown mix.

Nicky Hilton Shows Off a Hot New Trend: Leather-Sleeve Trench Coats

Leather-sleeve jackets are all the rage right now, and even classic trench coats are being reinvented via leather accents.

Leather-sleeve jackets are all the rage right now, and even classic trench coats are being reinvented via leather accents. During a shopping trip in NYC, Nicky Hilton wore a leather-sleeve trench by Burberry Prorsum with black leggings, a Chanel bag, and cat-eye sunglasses. While a Burberry coat will cost you upwards of a thousand dollars, Veda has a very similar leather-sleeve trench ($550) for half the cost, which you can preorder now for Spring. Some other ways to wear your leather-sleeve trench is with wide-leg trouser jeans, red denim, plaid pants, and even over a fitted LBD for a night out. From casual to dressy, this trench will be your confidant because the leather keeps it polished, while the khaki keeps it grounded.
