Just like our favorite t-shirts, cardigans are a proverbial closet staple for us — they're the ultimate layering piece. You can throw them on over everything from a tank to a tee to a button-down, and then fit them in easily under a blazer or coat when the weather is chilly. What's more, you can throw it on over your shoulders for a preppy feel or tie it around your waist when you're feeling sporty (or looking to channel a little '90s nostalgia). With the new year here, we think it's prime time to give your closet a complete cardigan refresh. That means adding styles that are simultaneously comfy and statement-making. We love details like shoulder cutouts, peplum, piping, cool prints, asymmetrical cuts, and more — you do too? Then shop 40 of our editors' picks below to get started.
Minka Kelly went on a dinner date with boyfriend Chris Evans in LA last night, and we couldn't stop staring at her new Chloé lace-up wedge booties ($398, originally $795) on her way out. They were the perfect Fall ending to her cozy and casual look: a brown shawl cardigan, a white tank, faded skinny jeans, and a leopard tote. Score Minka's exact booties — we also love these similar Aldo wedge lace-up booties ($60, originally $120) — to keep your feet stylin' all Fall and Winter.
Now is the perfect time to cozy up to this nubby white Rag & Bone cardigan ($255) that Jennifer Garner wore while picking up Pressed Juicery in LA. The actress opted to pair her new jacket with jeans, but you can totally dress it up by throwing it on over a little black dress at the office. We particularly love the contrasting black buttons and fuzzy feel. Button it up for a polished look or leave it unbuttoned for more of a laid-back vibe. Either way, don't be surprised if you get a few paws on you.
Leave it to Sarah Jessica Parker to pair a hot-pink cardigan with a preppy plaid skirt. The actress was spotted leaving her NYC apartment in an outfit that's sassy up top and preppy chic on bottom. Her Comme des Garçons skirt would be too demure on its own, but paired with a bright cardigan, it's instantly revitalized. A red crossbody bag added even more pizazz while simultaneously feeding into the red-and-pink color trend. If you admire SJP's eclectic look as much as we do, get her exact skirt, as well as some similar pieces, below. Or, next time you're reaching for a plaid piece in your closet, think to give it a major pop via a bright accent. Try a plaid dress with a bold bag, or a plaid blazer with neon flats.
I like to cover myself during Savasana with a flowy cardigan; it's nice being wrapped up and warm while in the meditative pose. My cardigan also doubles as a cute way to cover up after class, which is essential in the cooler weather. With Spring just around the corner, ditch that down jacket and get yourself a draped top to wear after class. Long and flowy, it will pair perfectly with your yoga capris or leggings.
Clockwise from top left: Lululemon Live Healthy wrap ($118), Splendid draped open-end cardigan ($95), Zobha Annette tunic ($98), Splendid Always Active hoodie ($118), Splendid slub loose knit hoodie ($81), Topshop knitted stripe cape cardigan ($76), Calvin Klein draped tunic cardigan ($48)
>> Instead of donning a not so pretty (albeit warm) jacket over your perfect holiday dress, opt for something just as festive. Whether it's a jacket, cardigan, or full-on coat, we got you covered. Peek our optimal picks from Diane von Furstenberg, J.Crew, and Markus Lupfer for more festal coverage.
We have hit September! Yes! My jacket, layering, and boot-loving self is cheering quite eagerly for the upcoming season of Fall. And yes, I'm aware it's still 95 degrees outside, but at least the month title "September" makes me seem a bit less ridiculous when all I want to do is make posts about sweaters and boots, right? I'm just so in love with the season of Fall because it's just the right amount of cold where you don't have to look like you just got off of a ski lift to stay warm, but you can certainly break out all of your favorite jackets to wear! So, when I begin posting cold-weather clothes like a mad man (or woman for that matter) over the next couple of weeks, don't say you weren't warned.

I'm always on the lookout for fashion-forward pieces, things that keep fashion on its toes. Like these Enza Costa Oversized Cardigans ($198 each) are totally innovative — a cardigan and maxi dress in one! Really cool concept, but I'm not so sure I like the execution. It's a bit overwhelming and does nothing for the figure. Bummer because it's a great idea. Cardigans are always on my brain, but when Summer rolls around, I gravitate toward ones that are less chunky, more lightweight. These Pins & Needles Open Cardigans ($15, originally $32) are perfect, not only in price, but also in style. The stripes make them incredibly chic, while the lack of buttons creates a laid-back vibe. Throw one on over a bikini, a tank, or a printed sundress for the ultimate mixmaster outfit.
