Designer Spotlight: Caroline Hedeya

This is a story about two girls, Caroline and Donna, who were destined to become stylish bosom buddies.

This is a story about two girls, Caroline and Donna, who were destined to become stylish bosom buddies. Before they met at F.I.T., the two led parallel lives hoping to become fashion designers one day. Shortly after graduating, Caroline and Donna combined their quirky ideas to create Caroline Hedaya, a genesis of Caroline's graceful touches with Donna's architectural aesthetic. For Spring '10, the duo supply us with a girlie gambit of crisp skirts, cropped lace tops, modern vintage frocks, and polka-dot prints made in cream and navy hues. I don't know which I love more: the simple cinched camisole dress or the white cut-out wonder . . .

Here's a fun fact: At the age of 4, Caroline used to get phone calls from her teacher telling her mom that her outfits were too extravagant for school. Luckily, her mother refused to pacify her daughter's eccentric ways — too cute!

Shopping: Strong Red Dresses With Soft Ruffles

This season, with the ruffle trend at full force, strong red dresses have been rendered in softer silhouettes.

This season, with the ruffle trend at full force, strong red dresses have been rendered in softer silhouettes. Pair these frocks with nude pumps and black eyeliner for a classic but updated evening look. Preen's Silk Ray Dress might be our favorite this season, but for something a little less costly, we also fancy the offerings from contemporary labels 3.1 Phillip Lim and Caroline Hedaya.

In The Showroom: Caroline Hedaya Fall 2009

Young design team, Caroline Hedaya and Donna Baxter, started their line, Caroline Hedaya, after befriending each other at FIT. Their look is feminine and their price point is contemporary so you can bet that everyone from Refinery 29 to Teen Vogue has given them a shoutout and that the brand is stocked at Shopbop, proudly. When we saw their collection in the showroom we were impressed with the quality--the weight of the floral peplum dress, the lightness of their trademark silk pieces--and the sexiness they showed this season. Even though there was plenty of the girlishness (ruffles, tulle lining) the most striking pieces had mesh or lace in the back. Check out our snapshots from the showroom and look book images from the Fall 2009 collection below.

In The Showroom: Caroline Hedaya Spring 09

Caroline Hedaya & Donna Baxter, the duo that make up the Caroline Hedaya brand, are young designers whose signature aesthetic is well timed--there's nothing that pleases us more for Spring 09 than ruffles, fringe, or pleats.

Caroline Hedaya & Donna Baxter, the duo that make up the Caroline Hedaya brand, are young designers whose signature aesthetic is well timed--there's nothing that pleases us more for Spring 09 than ruffles, fringe, or pleats. Adorning many, but not all, of the Spring 09 pieces were lovely ruffles in the front and back of garments. Hedaya sticks to beautiful, feminine basics otherwise.
