Some relationships blossomed within the industry — Julia Stegner and Steven Pan, who is Steven Meisel's first assistant; Caroline Trentini and Victor Demarchelier, who first saw each other when he was assisting his father Patrick on a shoot three years ago; Arlenis Sosa Pena and model Rene Rodriguez, who met through their agent; while some went outside the industry — Doutzen, Chanel, and Anna Maria Jagodzinska, who sees economics grad student Duncan Winecoff.  Curiously missing from the spread (though she appears elsewhere in the issue)?  Lily Donaldson and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld.

Vogue Pays Tribute to Model Muses for May 2009

>> The wait is over.
Vogue May 2009:

>> The wait is over.  The May 2009 issue of Vogue, wholly dedicated to models in anticipation of this year's Model as Muse Costume Insitute Gala next month has debuted, and Liya Kebede, Natalia Vodianova, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, Isabeli Fontana, Lara Stone, Jourdan Dunn, Raquel Zimmermann, Caroline Trentini, and Natasha Poly all made the final cut, wearing what appears to be Rodarte.  This cover, shot by Steven Meisel, is notable not only because of its subjects, but because it marks the third consecutive cover to feature a woman of color on the front.

Inside, Natalia Vodianova, who has been called "the Baby" by Steven Meisel and makeup artist Pat McGrath since they starting working with her, collaborated with them again on a tribute editorial to models past, from Twiggy to Dovima, similar to the one Gisele Bundchen did for Harper's Bazaar last month.  The key to Natalia's chameleon act?  "I looked at each woman's lips — they're all different."

>> THE MODELIZER —More names have come up for the model-centric May 2009 Vogue cover: Anna Maria Jagodzinska and Lara Stone, the latter of which supposedly fulfills the "unexpected choice" hint indicating a model who's never before appeared in Vogue.  Together with the seven names that have already come up — Caroline Trentini, Jourdan Dunn, Raquel Zimmermann, Natasha Poly, Isabeli Fontana, Liya Kebede, and Natalia Vodianova, the rumored nine spots have been fulfilled.

The only problem is, the last two — Liya and Natalia — who were identified by RG Vogue, conflict with another source, who won't name names but say two models, one with the first initial K, and the other with the first initial A, were supposedly involved.  Perhaps there are eleven models?  Or maybe the list was edited somewhere along the way. Yves Saint Laurent: Back in the Black for Fall 2009

>> It's all about black at Yves Saint Laurent — and not just on the runway.  Owner PPR just announced that after ten years of losses, the brand finally broke even in 2008.  Appropriately enough, Stefano Pilati sent out a Fall 2009 collection that was — you guessed it — mostly black, quilted, pinstriped, and in leather; apparently Pilati worked with automakers to cultivate some pieces in materials usually used in high-end cars.  Spring 2009 face Claudia Schiffer was in front row, and just as suspected, Caroline Trentini finally appeared as an exclusive, closing the show.  Pilati, who notably is one of only two designers in the industry who works without a stylist — the other being Giorgio Armani — riffed on YSL's heritage power-dressing, and the message was powerful; maybe a little too powerful for Yulia Kharlapanova, who had to take her shoes off.*image: source, source

>> THE MODELIZER —The dollfaces have been moving on — Lily Cole is studying at Cambridge, Gemma Ward is far from on-the-radar — and now Lisa Cant has joined them in leaving the runways: she enrolled in Columbia, where she's listed as doing General Studies, but is thinking of focusing on Economics.  Apparently, Caroline Trentini is also taking her time off from the runways to study — for her GED.  But she's not going anywhere — there's that rumored Vogue cover, and her agent says she has "An exclusive appearance somewhere VERY SOON which she is very excited about .

>> THE MODELIZER Abbey Lee Kershaw, who was originally only supposed to sit out New York Fashion Week due to a knee injury, is now sidelined for the rest of the season, explaining her absence from Gucci yesterday, where she is a current face of the brand.  Apparently she was cleared by a doctor to walk Milan and Paris, but when she arrived in Milan and went to castings for a day, discovered that she wasn't ready to walk in the shoes.  Currently, she's back in New York; still no word on fellow MIA models Ali Michael and Caroline Trentini and whether they'll be making an appearance this season. Caroline Trentini a No-Show at Boyf Victor Demarchelier's Opening

>> Last night, Victor Demarchelier, son of Patrick Demarchelier and boyfriend of Caroline Trentini, had his first photography opening with Alexandra Richards last night in New York.  Carol was, unsurprisingly, his favorite lens subject, posing for a number of photos dressed only from heels to waist, but she wasn't in attendance — and as far as we know, she's not in Milan, either.  She must still be visiting with her family in Brazil or recuperating from her Carnival appearance in Rio de Janeiro last week.  One attendee who was a bit of a surprise, however: Grace Coddington — Vogue is sending fewer editors to Milan this season, but I would've thought the creative director would make the cut.*image: source, source

>> THE MODELIZER —Naomi Campbell may greet the suggestion of passing the torch on to Jourdan Dunn with an irritated snort — "Jourdan Dunn isn't Naomi Campbell.  I've never said I'm retiring, And if I did want to stop working, I'd just do it quietly" — but it does make [her] "feel happy" to see Jourdan get covers and awards: "I'm just so thrilled."  Be prepared to be thrilled again, Naomi — according to Caroline Trentini, Jourdan is joining her and seven other models (seven now named, two unknown) on that foldout May 2009 Vogue cover.

Anna Wintour Makes It Back for A Night of Stars

>> After missing out on the Chanel Mobile Art opening and the Versace-hosted Whitney gala earlier this week, Anna Wintour was back in fine form — with Karl Lagerfeld at her side and Chanel on her person — at the Fashion Group International's Night of Stars last night.  It was a night of family — Donatella Versace picked up the Superstar Award as Allegra Beck Versace looked on, Franca Sozzani was honored with her son Francesco Carrozzini in attendance — and friends — honorees Christopher Bailey and Francisco Costa brought Kate Bosworth and Ashley Olsen, respectively.  Host Simon Doonan kept it light, at one point joking that Carla Sozzani had to make it back to the Marriott Marquis in time for a speed-dating session.*image: source, source
