John Galliano Shows a Little Garter for Fall 2009 Christian Dior Couture

>> Instead of the normal tent venue at Jardin de Tuileries in Paris, John Galliano moved his Fall 2009 couture show — which played twice-over for the first time in a number of seasons — to the upstairs salons of Dior flagship in Paris.  The models wound their way through the considerably smaller venue — which apparently got a little warm — to a soundtrack of giggling girls, allowing the audience to see the garments closer than usual.

The decision to go with a more intimate venue was not for cost-cutting purposes, according to Dior CEO Sidney Toledano, who said it was just as expensive to show in-house, what with the 4,000 roses decorating the runway; rather, it was to express the spirit of couture.  He maintained that Dior's couture sales in London alone are seeing a double-digit increase — perhaps that's why Galliano felt able to send down undergarment-revealing looks — "I call it 'cabine' fever!" — inspired by archive photographs from the '50s of Christian Dior in the midst of backstage mayhem.

Even in these times, there was still a feeling of excess — the final tulle gowns required two ushers to help the models and dresses through the doorway — and the label claimed model exclusives, including Chanel Iman.  But there was still an element of practicality — clients will be able to order the jackets with matching skirts, skirts with matching jackets, or request sheer skirts to be lined. Now the question remains: where was Anna Wintour?

>> About Chanel Iman's Teen Vogue Internship . . . A little clarification on Chanel's Teen Vogue internship — she was in the offices for a cover shoot with the magazine, according to her London agency Viva: "Chanel arrived for a Teen Vogue shoot very early. Rather than wait around doing nothing, or go away for a few hours, she said that she wanted to help out in the fashion cupboard. She tidied the place up and helped organise the samples." [Vogue UK]

Fashion Mourns Michael Jackson

>> Just today, Swarovski announced that they were going to clothe Michael Jackson head to toe for his "This Is It" tour kicking off next month — his costumes and sets were to feature over 300,000 crystals, in 53 different shapes, 43 different sizes, and 27 different colors.  In April, The Imagist reported that Balmain stylist Emmanuelle Alt "would weep" if Jackson allowed Balmain to do his tour costumes because she was "100% obsessed" with him — a fact reflected in Balmain's flashy runway pieces.Jackson had catapulted himself back into fashion's eye in recent months after he was spotted in a number of different Balmain looks — no doubt courtesy of Emmanuelle Alt — and a favorite gold studded Givenchy jacket.  At the news of his death this afternoon, an outpouring of reactions — some incredulous — came from models, editors, and designers alike — those from a few, below.

Stefano Pilati's Sustainable Yves Saint Laurent Collection Didn't Sustain In-Store for Long

>> Stefano Pilati has been in New York since the weekend, hanging out at the Mercer Hotel with Purple's Olivier Zahm, Chloe Sevigny, and Waris Ahluwalia, but last night he got down to business, hosting the launch of the Yves Saint Laurent sustainable "New Vintage" collection with Barneys.  All the bags, shoes, and dresses were cut from archive fabric left over from previous seasons, and Barneys fashion director Julie Gilhart reports that it went fast — only a few pieces left, and she grabbed one of the bags for herself.

Today, Pilati presented his Cruise 2010 collection to press and buyers — where Chanel Iman was apparently called out for Twittering while she modeled.

>> THE MODELIZER —Last night, at the Cinema Society screening of Easy Virtue, Sessilee Lopez teased some of her upcoming work: "There’s something special coming out in September that I’m not really allowed to talk about. It’s amazing.”  Presumedly she's referring to that mysterious London cover shoot that involved her, Chanel Iman, Jourdan Dunn, and Arlenis Sosa Pena, but unfortunately, we still don't know the publisher.
