Psycho Glamour With Swagger at Costello Tagliapietra

For Fall 2013, designers Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra of Costello Tagliapietra drew their inspiration from the future.

For Fall 2013, designers Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra of Costello Tagliapietra drew their inspiration from the future. Using a color palette filled with purples, blues, pinks, and greens, the beauty style was a reflection of an uptight woman who is finally trying to have some fun. The makeup look was created by Maki for MAC, hair was developed by lead stylist Nelson Vercher for the Rita Hazan Salon and nails were polished by Michelle Saunders for Essie.

The look: Highly texturized hair fastened in a low ponytail, metallic purple nails, and bright, matte fuchsia lips
The inspiration: Psycho glamour, but also pretty and slightly sensual
Who would wear it: Anyone with swagger. Think of someone like Natalie Portman, who is intelligent about her beauty

Frizzy Hair Is In at Costello Tagliapietra

"Frizz can be sexy!"

"Frizz can be sexy!" was the declaration at Costello Tagliapietra. Backstage, artists created a cross between femme fatale and subjects in 18th century oil paintings, as models were primped and preened in customized makeup and wearable hair.

The look: Texturized strands, glassy-pink nails, and luminescent makeup.
The inspiration: Paintings and drawings, specifically 18th century oil paintings.
Who would wear it: Anyone from a hip, young downtown trendsetter to a sophisticated lady.

Costello Tagliapietra Spring 2013

Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra certainly know their way around a slinky dress.
Costello Tagliapietra Spring 2013 | Runway

Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra certainly know their way around a slinky dress. They've made them the hallmark of their line, and for Spring 2013, they once again offered them up in spades. Draped, wrapped, and tied — one by one they came down the runway; some fell off the shoulder in asymmetrical folds, while others — appealingly — closed kimono-style at the waist. The real winners, however, were the styles that came in acid-hued splash prints; those felt powerful and wearable all at once.

  • Heidi Klum has been spotted in public with Thomas Hayo, an advertising executive who's also a judge on Germany's Next Top Model, which Klum hosts. Their public displays of affection have led some to believe Hayo is Klum's first romantic entanglement since splitting up with Seal. Klum and Seal had been married for almost seven years when they separated in January. Klum filed for divorce earlier this month. [The Fashion Spot]

  • Speaking of Top Model, Tyra Banks let three of ANTM's long-running cast members go this week. Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel, and Miss J. Alexander will not return to the show's 19th season. They've been replaced by Kelly Cutrone, Georgina Chapman, and Cat Deeley. Rumor has it that Bryanboy might make appearances on the next season, too. [Modelinia]

  • Friday was day one of Vogue UK's inaugural Vogue Festival. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana led one of today's sessions, but tomorrow will include talks with Diane von Furstenberg and Tom Ford, among others. Alexandra Shulman said she created the festival because she wanted to "analyze where fashion intersects with the world we live in." [The Chicago Tribune]

  • Costello Tagliapietra debuted its new lower-priced line of clothing, called C&T, at Barneys earlier this week. The dresses are all priced around $300, a mere fraction of what the main collection costs. [Racked]

  • Miranda Kerr turned 29 years old today. Celebrate by taking a look back at her laid-back, ultracool street style. [CelebStyle]

3-Layer Nails Make For the Ultimate Polish Trifecta at Costello Tagliapietra

What do you get when you sandwich a classic red polish in between a deep, rich brown and a heady black-brown?

What do you get when you sandwich a classic red polish in between a deep, rich brown and a heady black-brown? Why, the ultimate trifecta of cool nail polish palettes, of course. At Costello Tagliapietra's New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 show, models donned manicures featuring a clever "stacking" of three different richly hued shades: Essie's Carry On, followed by Bordeaux, and Little Brown Dress, respectively.

The result was "beautiful, elegant, and warm," according to Essie founder Essie Weingarten (for Beauty.com), who also recommends experimenting with mixing and matching the above colors to create your own unique formulation. The key, however, is to allow two minutes of drying time in between each layer. And while you wait? "Have a glass of bordeaux in between," she quips. See more of the rich red manicure up close now.

Custom-Blend Nails Shine at Costello Tagliapietra

At Costello Tagliapietra, manicurist Deborah Lippmann (for Beauty.com) nailed a chic, sophisticated look with a nude-gray hue.

At Costello Tagliapietra, manicurist Deborah Lippmann (for Beauty.com) nailed a chic, sophisticated look with a nude-gray hue. "The woman is 'finished,'" Lippmann said of the collection's inspiration. "She's definitely a woman, not a little girl." To play off the textures and patterns of the clothes, Lippmann layered two nail polishes to create a neutral nail that flattered models of all skin tones. First, she adorned nails with Waking Up in Vegas, a creamy gray with blue undertones. Then, she added a coat of Fashion, a yellow-based taupe. Customizing the color for each model involved using thicker or thinner coats to complement their undertones; the key to getting it right lies in the cuticle. "If your cuticle looks red, brown, or darkened when a polish is applied, the color is wrong for you," Lippmann explained. "With this look, we can make it look great on everybody."
