Backstage at the DKNY Spring 2012 show, Donna Karan talked about getting some patriotic inspiration, the new Spring silhouette, and what's at the top of her Fall shopping list. For more from Donna Karan on what trends have the most staying power come next season, check out our interview.
DKNY Spring 2012
The inspiration for Donna Karan's Spring 2012 DKNY collection took the best of both American worlds, combining "West Coast ease" and "East Coast edge." That meant a refreshing, utterly wearable mix of structured blazers and skinny pants, mixed with flowy asymmetric dresses in crepe de chine and georgette silk. Sequin skirts were layered under oversize, slouchy silk blouses and worn with sky-high platform wedges. Her palette veered effortlessly from red, white, and blue — we loved the floral print — to soft peach and and beige. It was the kind of collection where you wanted everything in it, because you know you'll wear it every day. This is Karan's thinking; after all, the models walked in right off the street, past a parked yellow taxi outfitted with a DKNY sign, and into the show, which was set in a open garage-like space in Manhattan's art gallery neighborhood. It was New York City street style at its best, and on 9/11, a day when many showgoers had an opportunity to think about how much New York had changed in the last 10 years, it was a brilliant reminder that thanks to creative forces like Karan, much hadn't changed at all.
- Trends: Asymmetric hems, soft layering, sequin skits, digital florals.
- Colors: Red, white, blue, peach, nude, black.
- Key Piece: Asymmetric hem dresses, the floral pieces, sequin skirts.
- Accessories: Wide-brim hats, the platform wedges in neon pink and floral print.
- Who Would Wear It: Girls who transition easily between work and play, breezy and edgy. Think Blake Lively and Leighton Meester, or Whitney Port.

DKNY Makes a Million-Dollar Bottle of Perfume For Charity

Sometimes extravagance can serve a good cause. To celebrate the launch of its latest fragrance, Golden Delicious, DKNY has created a literal million-dollar bottle of the perfume, complete with jewel-encrusted pedestal, which the company will send to showcases in cities all over the world before auctioning it off for charity.
The atomizer is made of 14-karat yellow and white gold and has 2,909 precious stones inset, including a 1.65 carat tourmaline, a 7.18 carat sapphire, a 3.07 carat ruby, and more than 20 large diamonds.
Net proceeds of the sale will go to Action Against Hunger, which provides inpatient and at-home care for people suffering from acute malnutrition, trucks in clean water to areas affected by natural disasters, and performs a host of other humanitarian activities worldwide. So if you have a million extra dollars lying around, and you really love DKNY Golden Delicious, you know what to do.
DKNY Gets the Gossip Girl Touch
Stockings used to be a somewhat boring Winter necessity — until Gossip Girl came around. Thanks to Blake Lively and Leighton Meester, both of whom were spotted wearing pretty hues and textures on the popular fashion-heavy show, legwear has become a cool outlet to show off your sleek styling skills. Perhaps that's why DKNY just announced a collaboration with Eric Daman, costume designer of Gossip Girl, to design a legwear capsule collection for Fall. “I feel like I grew up with legwear in the '70s and '80s, and it’s great to see legwear being part of a woman’s ensemble, a defining piece of women’s ready-to-wear, said Daman. . . . “Hosiery is quite sexy. What we try to do in Gossip Girl is lots of texture. It makes the characters come alive . . . it gives a character like Blair life when she’s wearing a pencil skirt with distressed rib tights. It gives her look something special.”

Celeb Style: Olivia Palermo
Olivia Palermo outfitted the perfect mix of '70s glam and modern event wear while attending DKNY's Sunglasses Soiree in NYC last night. She styled up a DKNY colorblock maxi with just a few eclectic elements. To complement the bold colors, Olivia singles out the hot pink shade, then plays it up with a bright clutch and Stuart Weitzman sandals. What we love most? Those amazing statement jewels to add just little edge — playful, unexpected, and totally on point. Just shop our editor's picks below to channel the same style.

Celeb Style: Katie Cassidy
A sun-kissed Katie Cassidy looked adorable in a DKNY ensemble while mingling with other celebs at DKNY's Sun Soiree in New York City. Her lip-print blouse, tweed shorts, and peach sandals looked trés chic, while her gradient aviators and turquoise cocktail ring injected a Cali-cool vibe.
