Diane von Furstenberg and Yvan Mispelaere Show a Glitzy and Glamorous Collection For Fall 2011

>> Diane von Furstenberg and co-designer Yvan Mispelaere’s theme for DVF’s Fall 2011 collection was “American Legends,” specifically referencing Millicent Rogers, Diana Vreeland, and Gloria Vanderbilt, in which von Furstenberg explained as runway explorations of “rodeo, editor in chief, and society lady.” So it was only fitting to have a few leading ladies — Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Molly Sims, Fergie, and Maggie Q — sitting front row at the event yesterday to check out the eccentric and eclectic sea of colorful liquid sequin gowns, graphic gaucho wraps, print pajama suits, “like the ones I used to wear to Studio 54,” said von Furstenberg, along with leather jackets, and her signature wrap dresses.

High slits, an overarching theme thus far during Fashion Week, also made their way on the runway in addition to sleek silk tunic dresses styled with Western-inspired hats and stacked knee-high boots. Von Furstenberg's throwback references, like '70s-inspired pleated dresses, and modern, via a cropped star-embellished jacket, were seamlessly intertwined, creating a covetable collection for any stylefile.

Fab How-To: Wear Color to Work

I fell in love with this Lucky editorial showing a colorfully clad gal getting out of a taxi, looking ready to rock her day job.

I fell in love with this Lucky editorial showing a colorfully clad gal getting out of a taxi, looking ready to rock her day job. I get out of a lot of taxis too (of course, also rocking my day job), but I'm usually clad in black, gray, or white. It gets boring. In their Pre-Fall collections, Diane von Furstenberg and Nina Ricci showed color in work-ready outfits, and it's a totally bold and refreshing way to go to work. Our favorite look: try a knee-length red skirt ($109) with a minty green top ($19) and either go all the way with blue pumps ($50) or scale back with a nude shoe.

2011 Spring New York Fashion Week: Diane von Furstenberg

The "Goddess"-titled Spring collection was described by the wonder woman herself as being about living your fantasy, expressing freedom, and celebrating beauty.

The "Goddess"-titled Spring collection was described by the wonder woman herself as being about living your fantasy, expressing freedom, and celebrating beauty. The concept didn’t surprise at all — I wouldn’t expect anything less than a deity floating down the runway, especially if it comes from the creative genius of von Furstenberg.

There were 50 looks and each piece delivered a powerful pattern punch. Bold black and white graphic prints were embellished with gold and silver metallic accents, while neon green and yellow made a standout entrance on the catwalk. The DvF-signature wrap was painted in mix-and-match "broken wave" and "broken clouds" designs. We loved seeing von Furstenberg’s playful touches in the form of giant cape hoods and coke-bottle sunnies. But as with any crème de la crème collection, you have to save the best for last — we couldn’t take our eyes off the glimmering gold silk lamé evening gown at the very end.

First Look: Diane Von Furstenberg Home Collection

As we reported back in January, Diane von Furstenberg has launched a home furnishings collection.

As we reported back in January, Diane von Furstenberg has launched a home furnishings collection. In a deal with Springs Global, von Furstenberg will produce tabletop, bedding, and bath items under the name DvF Home Collection. Von Furstenberg is hardly new to the interior design market, having designed household items in the '70s with Sears and more recently collaborated on a capsule collection with the Rug Comapny.

Lovers of Diane von Furstenberg's fashion line will no doubt be pleased with the designer's home decor aesthetic, as DvF plans to bring the same fun-loving, bright prints to her new project. "Instead of designing for the body, you are creating an environment. But it’s the same in terms of functionality and the need for it to be colorful, happy and harmonious," said the designer. Look for the new collection in stores early next year.

This Sunday, Diane von Furstenberg is launching a Mother's Day "Love is Life" T-shirt to benefit the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. This most recent initiative in DVF's ongoing commitment to women's empowerment issues will generate funds for expecting mothers and newborns in developing countries.

The designer hosted a party last night in her Meatpacking District studio with Georgina Chapman, Liya Kebede, and Christy Turlington Burns to celebrate the partnership. During the event, Turlington Burns screened a preview of her film No Woman No Cry, a documentary examining the unnecessary deaths associated with childbirth.

On sale this Sunday in Diane von Furstenberg boutiques and online, the Mother's Day White Ribbon Alliance T-shirt is $145 well spent.
