Derek Lam Pre-Fall 2012

>> The Japanese editors who turn up to Pitti Uomo in Florence every year — especially as snapped by Scott Schuman — were the starting point for Derek Lam's Pre-Fall 2012 collection. "In Japan, they call them fashion nerds, but to me they’re not nerdy. They’re fabulous," Lam explained. And so, coats, trousers, tops, and sheaths were sharply-tailored and done up in gorgeous Glen plaid, herringbone, and jacquard denim. But it wasn't all borrowed-from-the-boys: Lam also worked lingerie-inspired gowns, bandana-print frocks, and fluted skirts into the mix.

Derek Lam Dishes on His New 10 Crosby Collection, Holiday Dressing, and the Best Career Advice

We've long-loved Derek Lam's namesake label; now the designer behind the minimalist, street-cool separates and chic dressing is giving us something else to gush about.

We've long-loved Derek Lam's namesake label; now the designer behind the minimalist, street-cool separates and chic dressing is giving us something else to gush about. His newly launched 10 Crosby collection is another foray into covetable clothing, this time with a lower price point ($195 to $895) and ultra-wearable line of easy silhouettes and fabrics. We got a peek at the new Resort collection during a sit-down last night at Barneys — and we were charmed almost as much by 10 Crosby's silky printed pajama pants as we were by the ever-delightful designer. Read what Derek has to say about the inspiration behind the new line, the best career advice he's ever received, and his holiday wish list.

Derek on the woman he had in mind when designing 10 Crosby:
I think that was the reason I used 10 Crosby as the label. There were so many great moments where someone was walking down the street and I'm like, 'God, she's super stylish, or she's very inspiring' and that's what I kind of use as my inspirations. I think 10 Crosby the address is so unique. It's one of my favorite streets in all of New York City. It's got high design, great furniture design, great fashion designers. It's a microcosm of something that I think is very special, very unique. It's got that perfect mix that I love about New York.

On the conceptual idea of 10 Crosby and his customer:
Can I say that it's me as a feminine? Truly, I think why I'm so excited about it, about doing 10 Crosby is that it's speaking to me as a consumer and I think that's really important and I think that's what keeps me really excited.

Derek Lam Spring 2012 Runway

We caught a bit of California cool from Derek Lam at his Spring 2012 runway show.

We caught a bit of California cool from Derek Lam at his Spring 2012 runway show. Inspired by an imaginary mid-century modern house in Palm Springs, the clean, classic collection had a '60s spin, peppered with pops of canary yellow, coral, and bold graphic prints. To see the complete runway, watch our coverage now.

Derek Lam: Spring 2012

Derek Lam was California dreamin' for his Spring 2012 collection, invoking "mid-century louche and luxury," according to show notes. Think Palm Springs, Frank Sinatra, and Angie Dickinson by the pool, and you have the inspiration for Lam's upbeat collection that still carried his signature clean lines and classic silhouettes. '60s geometric prints enlivened pencil skirts, and colors like canary yellow and coral were mixed into fitted knits and one beautifully flowing jumpsuit. For evening, there were beaded tile dresses in loose, flowy silhouettes, perfect for cocktail hour and dancing under the stars. To really understand just how beautiful these clothes were in person, you have to check out our runway video.

  • Trends: '60s, geometric prints, jumpsuits, leather, minimalism.
  • Colors: Caramel, yellow, coral, peppermint, marine.
  • Key Piece: Anything leather, the coral jumpsuit, the little white dresses.
  • Accessories: The leather cage applique Bristol wedge, Charley clutch, leather and vinyl capri wedge.
  • Who Would Wear It: Timeless, polished girls who favor classic looks — Rachel Bilson, Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie.

Derek Lam Spring 2012

>> Inspired by “a little California dreamin’,” Derek Lam sent out eye-catching sequined "tile" dresses, purple-infused "kaleidoscope"-print looks head to toe, and Spring leather. No neon here. Instead, Lam says, “There is an influence of mid-century colors, the bright tangerines and the peppermints, and the chrome yellows. Not acid brights, but warm brights, mixed with things that are rustic and natural, shades of brown and burlap. Something clean with something rustic.” He adds: “For me, it’s about texture in a new way, so there’s a lot of embroidery, a lot of bright colors, a mix of something that’s more crafty and rustic feeling with things that are more spare and modern.”
