The Fall 2012 DKNY collection by Donna Karan was inspired by the Beat Generation and featured clothes that were at once ladylike and strong, thanks to fitted silhouettes, leather and buckle detailing, and a dark palette punched up with deep red. Dedicated to the Beat Generation, DKNY Fall 2012 showed a collection filled with strong silhouettes, pretty details, and even some shearling and fur. Designed with a city girl in mind, these seemed dedicated to the working city girl — skirt and jacket looks were belted for a crisp look, and coats were edged in leather. Ashley Greene, Nina Dobrev, and Coco Rocha were seated in the front row, watching the models come in literally off the street — the show was sat in a cavernous garage-like space with double-doors that opened out onto the sidewalk, allowing the models to walk in. Minus the fact that it was freezing out, it made for an energetic show.
>> DKNY offered up a plethora of citified cold-weather looks and some very stellar outerwear options for Fall 2012: boxy fur jackets, leather-sleeved cocoon coats, sporty puffers, and double-breasted wool coats. As for what to wear underneath, there were pencil skirts, straight-cut trousers, body-skimming maxi dresses, and a plethora of flippy little miniskirts. But the main take-away from this DKNY collection? When in doubt, belt it.

Donna Karan's Spring 2012 runway channeled a strong tribal feel with muted earthy notes, wild prints, and spiked accessories, paired with slicked back ponytails and bare faces — save for a dark lip on the models.
