Martha Stewart Has a Very Important Message For Vince's Doo-Ri Chung

Martha Stewart's love for the California-based brand Vince is well-documented — and Stewart has a message for its new creative director, Doo-Ri Chung.

Martha Stewart's love for the California-based brand Vince is well-documented — and Stewart has a message for its new creative director, Doo-Ri Chung.

"I love Vince. These are Vince leggings," Stewart said, swinging one leg from underneath a conference table during an interview at Macy's Herald Square flagship store last week. "These are fantastic. I wear them all the time because, actually, they fit me. I don't have to even try them on in the store. I know that if I buy my size, I will get a fit."

Stewart expressed concern about the departure of Rea Laccone, who oversaw design at Vince, but seemed relieved to learn that her replacement, Chung, is a woman.

"Oh good. I hope she keeps the same sizing," she said before leaning forward into our voice recorder to underscore the point. "Doo-Ri, please keep the same sizes because I don't like fitting rooms."

But Stewart does like J.Crew ("everybody wears everything J.Crew in my office") and "these young guys called Proenza Schouler." She said, "I think their things are very well made, I think they're beautiful, I think they could be a really big, important part of the American marketplace. They are not yet, but they are striving to be that. They're not a flash in the pan."

And neither, certainly, is Stewart, who's been too busy "designing things for the home and for living" to make a push into fashion. But that doesn't mean it won't happen someday. "I don't rule out anything like that, like entering fashion, because I would like to," she said. "I think I could design."

A little more than six months after designer Doo-Ri Chung left her eponymous New York label, she's headed to Los Angeles to become the creative director of Vince. In her new role, Chung will be in charge of design, product development, and creative branding initiatives.

"I've long admired the [Vince] brand because of its loyal customer following and its modern design sensibility," Chung said in a statement to WWD.

The announcement of her new job comes a day after Vince's cofounders, Rea Laccone and Christopher LaPolice, said they were leaving the brand. Jill Granoff, CEO of Kellwood Group — the company that owns Vince, Rebecca Taylor, and David Meister, among other brands — is now also CEO of Vince.

Granoff wants to "accelerate the growth of Vince and unleash its potential as a global lifestyle brand," and said Chung is the right designer to help do that. "She's very well-known for her design and technical aesthetic. She has a modern design aesthetic and a real understanding of our customer."

Doo-Ri Chung Leaving Her Clothing Label Doo.Ri

Doo-Ri Chung is leaving Doo.Ri, the award-winning clothing company she founded in 2001.

Doo-Ri Chung is leaving Doo.Ri, the award-winning clothing company she founded in 2001.

The designer offered no explanation for the exit, and neither did the Tharanco Group, which owns the brand. In a statement Thursday, the Tharanco Group said it "wishes Chung well in all her future endeavors." This exit is reminiscent of Simon Spurr's departure from his eponymous menswear company, which he left without explanation in March.

Chung graduated from Parsons in 1995 and worked for Geoffrey Beene for six years before founding her own company. Chung launched her signature collection in 2003. In 2006, she was a winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and won the CFDA's up-and-coming designer of the year award. Since then she's dressed First Lady Michelle Obama, and this year she designed a capsule collection for Macy's.

    >> Sophisticated to the max; that's how Doo.Ri is doing it for Fall 2012. Gorgeous draping, moody hues, wool pants, and mixed-knit turtlenecks are streamlined and chic. Hemlines are demure; silhouettes are loose with bouts of airy asymmetry. Even leather pants are less tough and more ladylike. Finishing off the polished looks are slick ponytails accentuated with beautiful black ribbon headbands.

    Doo.Ri for Macy's

    >> Fresh off dressing Michelle Obama for a state dinner with South Korea's president and first lady last Thursday, Doo-Ri Chung has been signed for an upcoming Macy's collaboration.

Chung's collection, which hits Macy's for eight weeks starting Feb. 15, will include her signature draped jersey, knitwear, and art-inspired prints on short- and maxi-length dresses, leggings, blouses, and trench coats, priced $39 to $159. “The customer is very different from whom we’ve catered to before, but I really didn’t have to adapt. Macy’s wanted to keep the design level high. I didn’t feel the challenge was very different,” Chung said.

Chung is the fifth designer to collaborate with Macy's; although, the retailer would not disclose any designer it is working with past Chung, officials did note the series is resonating and will continue through at least 2012 with other designers.
