One Editor, One $500 Budget — See How She Spends It!

Want to know how we shop?

Want to know how we shop? It's basically our job to pinpoint the best things, spot the trends, and style outfits for your viewing pleasure. That said, it's hard not to shop for ourselves when we're constantly on the job. Next up for our budget shopping challenge is our associate editor, Marisa Tom. See how she spends her $500 now.

I've never been one to dress up, even when the occasion calls for it. I try to find loopholes in accessorizing, color palettes, and cool detailing in order to get away with sticking to my low-key styling vibe. No matter what though, I grab pieces that straddle the fine line between fashionable and functional. For this budget-friendly spree, I pulled together items that could translate into this Winter's wardrobe as well as the next Winter's . . . and the next. Add to the mix a handful of whimsical, colorful accessories, and you've got a fun group of pieces that can be worn for a chic everyday look or a chill night out on the town.

Ever wonder how a fashion editor determines her favorite items and top picks?
Fashion Editor Winter 2011 Shopping Picks on a Budget

Ever wonder how a fashion editor determines her favorite items and top picks? It's essentially our job to shop — to sift through the newest of the new, the chicest of the chic, the most-wanted of the wanted. Every day we scour the four corners of the shopping world — from huge e-commerce sites to the tiniest indie boutique — to find you the pieces you didn't even know you needed. That said, it's hard not to shop for ourselves when we're constantly inundated with all those amazing goods. In this new series, we challenge our editors to spend $500 on their Winter wardrobes — just to see what they would pick for themselves. Next up, Christina Pérez, associate editor at our sister site, Fashionologie. Click through to see how she spends her money now.

I tend to gravitate toward pretty simple items that I know will mix easily with things I already own. I like clean shapes, tactile fabrics, and neutral colors — with a gorgeous print or bold hue thrown in here and there for good measure. When I'm shopping, I try to think "versatility" — if I can think of several ways to wear one item, then I know it was meant to be mine.

Ever wonder how a fashion editor determines his favorite items and top picks?

Ever wonder how a fashion editor determines his favorite items and top picks? It's essentially our job to shop — to find the coolest of the cool, the hippest of the hip, and the most coveted pieces out there. Every day we scour shopping sites and brick-and-mortar stores alike to show you the clothes you didn't even know you needed. And, yes, sometimes we pick a little somethin' somethin' up along the way. With our newest challenge, see how our editors spend $500 on their Winter wardrobes. Next up, Danny Feekes, our associate editorial director of style. I'm originally from Kansas — where one truly dresses for the seasons — but since moving to San Francisco seven years ago, I've adapted to the temperate, year-round climate by wearing, what some have called, a uniform. I was quick to adopt to the casual, Northern California aesthetic, and most days you'll find me in skinny jeans, some semblance of plaid, and either a cardigan or v-neck sweater. It's a formula that works for me, and I don't stray too far, too often. With a $500 budget, I'd buy more of the same, but infuse some pop colors and unique prints. I'd like to think the following picks would look good together, or as individual items added to my tiny, already jam-packed closet. I'd gladly give a few pieces to charity to make room for the following . . .

If you've ever been curious about how a fashion editor picks out her must haves, listen up.

If you've ever been curious about how a fashion editor picks out her must haves, listen up. It's second nature for us to find the most beautiful pieces, know the trends, and put together the best outfits. That said, we're giving our editors a $500 budget shopping challenge to spend it however they want. Next up is our FabSugarTV host and producer, Allison McNamara. See how she spends her $500 now.

I'm all about investing in really nice shoes and handbags, and then spending moderately on everything else. That being said, $500 isn't enough to buy me the Proenza Schouler PS11 bag or the Chanel boots that I have not-so-subtly hinted at for Christmas. Instead, I opted to spend my money on versatile pieces that will mix and match well with items I already have in my wardrobe. My style tends to sway a bit dressier than most; colorful button-downs and blazers are my typical go-to — and you will rarely catch me in jeans. Since it never really gets that cold in LA, I'm on the hunt for a buttery brown leather skirt, a cozy lightweight knit, and a festive cocktail dress to get me through the holiday season. When it comes to my closet, I pretty much have the basics covered: racks of super-soft tees, enough J Brands to fit a small but well-dressed denim army, and black skinny pants of every finish imaginable. So when it's time to shop, I like to spend those blissful stolen hours scooping up all the eye-catching, of-the-moment accouterments I can get my hands on. To continually breathe new life into my existing wardrobe, I opt for detailed blazers, delightfully bright or printed footwear, and a heavy artillery of statement accessories. For going out, I'll throw an LBD in the mix and add a pop of color or texture with my accessories. Ready to see how I spent my $500? Click through to see and shop my picks!

I'm an eclectic shopper. Admittedly, there are big ticket items I'll always spend on — quality denim, a great handbag, a leather jacket — but more often, I dress according to my moods and my style's constantly changing, especially with my recent move from San Francisco to New York. Now, I'm in the market for sequins, great seasonal booties, and statement pieces that'll make dressing up for the Big City a lot more fun. Ready to see how I spent my budget? Winter Fashion Shopping Essentials For 2011

Last week, we kicked off our budget shopping challenge — each editor gets a $500 Winter fashion budget and is able to spend it however she wants. Next up is our assistant editor, Britt Stephens. I've always wanted to be that girl who can easily commit to one "style", but I just can't do it! Too many things inspire me and catch my eye that it becomes utterly impossible for people to pin down my look (not that I want them to). Once Winter rolls around, I'm drawn to things that are cozy and comfortable, allow for easy accessorizing, and have that perfect amount of sparkle — it is party season, after all. That said, it's hard not to shop for ourselves when we're constantly tempted. Today, we're kicking off our budget shopping challenge in our Fab offices. She has a knack for cool cuts and bright tennis shoes — how cute are her Isabel Marant sneakers? See how she spends her $500 now.

I tend to move towards darker palettes during the Winter so in an effort to counteract my black and gray hues, I play with texture. Since I already have a nice supply of pants and skirts, my picks are all about cozy jackets and sweaters. I'm also in the mood for fun jewelry and accessories via feathers and beads to add a slight bohemian look to my everyday look. Want to see how I spent my $500 budget?
