Met Gala: Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes stepped out for the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a custom Calvin Klein creation.

Katie Holmes stepped out for the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a custom Calvin Klein creation. The brunette beauty kept her hair slicked back, her eye makeup dark and smoky, and as for the dress? Holmes said she couldn't say "no" to this Francisco Costa-designed gown because it was just "so beautiful." From the dramatic sweeping train to the illusion-like bodice to the circular halter-style detail, it's certainly worth a second (and third) glance. What's your verdict?

Calvin Klein Collection Pre-Fall 2013

"The future is about new construction," said Francisco Costa after the Pre-Fall 2013 presentation for Calvin Klein. "You have to show something new."

What's new at this brand is a focus on generous proportions. Costa put rounded shoulders on generous coats belted at the waist like robes, and let slim skirts and dresses fall below the knee. Some of the looks were paired with turtlenecks or dickies (and a few were made from shaved mink), which gave the show a monastic feeling.

Not that there wasn't a little kink, too. One of those coats was cut from a shiny light-brown vinyl, and there were a few pieces — like a sleeveless shirt with a peplum and an overcoat — made from black leather.

    Calvin Klein Resort 2013

Francisco Costa ventured a bit outside the minimalist box for Calvin Klein's Resort 2013 collection, adding prints and patterns to his traditionally monochromatic color assortment. The show opened with a double-breasted jacket over a skirt — both rendered in a soft yellow and white print. That look was later joined by a jacket and dress in pale taupe python and a series of garments decorated with dots of varying size. In between, Costa was sure to feature the kind of crisp tone-on-tone looks the house is known for: a white bandeau top and skirt worn under a long-sleeved chiffon dress, or a deep green dress with athletic-cut arm holes, for example. Costa's readiness to brush up against the confines of minimalism — without stepping outside of them — resulted in a collection that felt decidedly modern.

Here's Why You Need to Line Up For Francisco Costa's Calvin Klein Dress Collection For Macy's

Zoe Saldana, Kerry Washington, and most recently Emily Blunt at the Met Gala are just a few of the celebrities who don Francisco Costa's minimally chic collection for Calvin Klein, and now you can get a piece of Francisco's genius designs for much less.

Zoe Saldana, Kerry Washington, and most recently Emily Blunt at the Met Gala are just a few of the celebrities who don Francisco Costa's minimally chic collection for Calvin Klein, and now you can get a piece of Francisco's genius designs for much less. Today, we got a preview of Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein (Francisco's first ever diffusion collection), exclusively available at Macy's on May 15, and believe us when we say the line is every bit as chic as the designer's main collection. "It's a good price, great design," said Costa. "One of the inspiration points came from the Museum of Modern Art in Sao Paulo, which was really inspirational because there was a picture of a sunset picture, and the sun was just hitting the pavement. It was so significant to me and that's where the color palette came from . . . The fabric is so nice, very versatile, and easy to wear during the day, to the office, and into the evening." One touch of the fabric and you will not believe that each dress only costs from $135 to $180. "If you think of Jennifer Lawrence in her red dress at the Oscars, this is basically it, what it represents," said Costa. Check out the slideshow to see the collection — additional colors like guava, warm cocoa, and iron are not included in the lookbook, but will be available upon launch — right now, then remember to check out Macy's in stores or online on May 15 and nab a dress, or two, before they sell out fast.

The collection of jersey and crepe pieces — titled Francisco Costa For Calvin Klein — will be priced from $135 to $180 and is part of the retailer's "A Magical Journey to Brasil" Spring initiative. "The collection really represents Calvin Klein; its really light, its really well-made, and the price is really right." Costa told us. "It's always a challenge but very exciting to design within a different block. It's good that we can bring our collection product to a much larger audience."

Francisco Costa Models, Natalia Vodianova Defends Her "Skinny" Comments, and Opening Ceremony Pops Up in London

    • Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa landed his first modeling assignment with the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Costa will star in a campaign advertising the organization's new "São Paolo for the Cure!" t-shirts, set to debut tomorrow in his native Brazil. He's joined in the campaign by fellow Brazilians Luciana Casta and Raquel Zimmermann. [Daily Front Row]

    • Natalia Vodianova took flak for saying "It's better to be skinny than to be fat" at this past weekend's Vogue festival, and today she responded to the criticism on her Facebook page, explaining that her original comment was designed to make people laugh. "If I was giving a speech I would have chosen my words more carefully of course," she wrote. [The Cut]

    • Opening Ceremony will open its first London store — a pop-up shop — to celebrate the start of the 2012 Olympic games this July. When the games are over, the store will move to a permanent spot on King Street in the Covent Garden neighborhood. "Bringing Opening Ceremony to Covent Garden is an important next step in the growth of our company," said founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. [Catwalk Queen]

    • The Food and Drug Administration will start monitoring what goes into beauty products sold in the United States by creating a mandatory ingredient registry next year. Current law allows beauty companies to report their ingredients voluntarily, and there are only 10 ingredients that are banned from domestic products. In the European Union, tighter beauty industry regulations have banned some 1,200 ingredients. [Refinery29]

    • Richemont, owner of luxury jewelers and watchmakers like Cartier and IWC, won a momentous infringement case against a company that registered the trademark for Vacheron Constantin — Richemont's oldest watch brand — in Russia and sold clothes under that label. The outcome of the case means that a well-known trademark in one country can't be taken and reregistered in another country, because it can confuse consumers and harm the original trademark holder's reputation. "This is a landmark case with worldwide implications," said Richemont chief counsel Frederick Mostert. [Material World]
