Is Naomi Posing In Dennis Basso's Fur Ad Hypocritical?

Naomi Campbell has everyone talking again.

Naomi Campbell has everyone talking again. The once-PETA poster girl has hooked up with fur designer Dennis Basso to model his Fall '09 ad campaign. "During these economic times, we wanted to take the opportunity to be noticed — to show we are here and here to stay," Basso said. Helping him reach his goal was photographer Tom Munro, stylist Patti Wilson, and creative director Giovanni Bianco. The ad debuts in September, and industry sources are estimating Naomi's paycheck to be in the mid-six-figure dollar range. Given her past work with PETA, do you think it's hypocritical of Naomi to partner with a Basso?

Fur Statement Shoulders Find Their Way

Statement shoulders and unabashed fur were strong trends on the Fall 2009 runways but few can say whether the looks will really hit home with shoppers.

Statement shoulders and unabashed fur were strong trends on the Fall 2009 runways but few can say whether the looks will really hit home with shoppers. Regardless, the combination of the two trends--literally, fur statement shoulders--seems to making headway. This week marked the launch of Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2009 ad campaign, in which models pose in the brand's hot pink furs, while a Miu Miu goat hair collar appeared in the new arrivals section of Net-a-Porter. See the trend from runway to retail floor, below.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Goes Antianimal, Hermes Goes Pro

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has the pick of the litter when it comes to wearing sumptuous designer creations but her selection might be a little more limited now that she's vowed to be more animal friendly.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has the pick of the litter when it comes to wearing sumptuous designer creations but her selection might be a little more limited now that she's vowed to be more animal friendly. "I do not wear, buy, or own fur or animal skin other than leather or skin of animals raised for feeding purposes. I am not a vegetarian and I don't find it illogical to wear skins of animals whose meat is also eaten." said Bruni-Sarkozy in a recent letter to PETA. Will Carla inspire others to do the same?

Meanwhile, Hermes has just announced it will start breeding its own crocodiles to keep up with the high demand for its iconic handbags. Despite the recession, Hermes produces 3,000 crocodile bags a year, which is not enough for the crazy waiting list — often several years long — of customers. "We cannot face demand. We have massive overdemand. The world is not full of crocodiles." said Hermes chief executive, Patrick Thomas.

Certainly two different views on using animals for fashion. Are you on team Carla or team Hermes?

Fall 2009 Trend Report: Colorful Fur

Fur was all over the Fall 2009 catwalks and one remarkable group were those rendered in color. From deep burgundy and plum to acid green and bright blue many colors were shown. With these bright, unabashed furs it seemed designers were asserting their power and sending the message that theirs would not be the label to buckle under economic pressure. Whether we will see these colorful furs on the street come winter is another matter entirely but do count on seeing them on newsstands in September. Check out our favorites in the gallery below.

Allison Parris Offers A New Eco Vision

Eco-friendly clothing, however far it has come, can still largely be described as "bohemian". As seasons go by, however, the options become more plentiful and a new line, called Allison Parris, rather proves that point. This Fall 2009 is the first season for the brand, operated by designer Allison Parris and lawyer Marissa Kim, and right out of the gate came sophisticated, party-ready looks.  Check out a few of our favorites in the gallery below.

Wild Animals Need Furs

Maybe you were doing some Spring cleaning in grandmother's attic and you uncovered an old fur coat.

Maybe you were doing some Spring cleaning in grandmother's attic and you uncovered an old fur coat. Now I'm betting most animal lovers wouldn't choose to wear it, but thrifting or selling the pelt isn't the best solution. Even if you donate the proceeds, do you really want to encourage someone else to wear it either?

Instead, ship the coat to the Humane Society's Coats For Cubs program for a tax deductible donation. Upon receiving old furs, organization staffers cut up and distribute to comfort a variety of animals in wildlife rehabilitation efforts – I know I'd feel better having orphaned creatures snuggling or playing with this for their own feel better moment as well!
