It's a Boy! Georgina Chapman Welcomes Second Child (Updated)

Congratulations are in order for Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, who gave birth to a boy late last week.

Congratulations are in order for Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, who gave birth to a boy late last week.

Page Six reported that Chapman and her movie-mogul husband, Harvey Weinstein, welcomed the new addition to their family on Thursday in New York. It's the first son for both Chapman and Weinstein and the second child the couple has had together (they had a daughter, India Pearl, in 2010). Weinstein has three daughters — Emma, Lily, and Ruth — from his first marriage.

Update: Page Six has reported that the baby's name is Dashiell Max Robert. The first name is for The Thin Man author Dashiell Hammett (a source said Weinstein was reminded of the book's main female character, Nora Charles, when he first met Chapman). Max was Weinstein's father's name, and he and his brother Robert (known as Bob) formed both Miramax and The Weinstein Company together.

For their Fall 2013 collection, Marchesa designers Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman traveled East — Far East, to be specific. The fearless twosome offered up full-length ball gowns, mermaid-hem dresses, and modern tea-length styles in lustrous reds, silvers, and black duchesse satin. The avant-garde gowns were given an Asian-inspired spin with traditional Mao collars, sheer tulle balloon sleeves, and intricate gold-leaf embroidery and styled with triple-strap pumps and sleek side-parted updos.

  • Colors: Black, white, maroon, silver, fuchsia.
  • Key details: Mao collars, sheer sleeves, gold embroidery, tulle layers.
  • Shoes: Triple ankle-strap heels, lace-up peep-toe booties.
  • Beauty look: Deep side parts with slicked-back updos, pretty peach and berry-hued lip stains.
  • Who should wear it: Classic beauties who aren't afraid to take red-carpet risks, like Naomi Watts, Anne Hathaway, and Kerry Washington.

Marchesa Is Launching a Contemporary Line

The fantastical princess gowns created by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig for Marchesa are by now the stuff of red-carpet legend.

The fantastical princess gowns created by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig for Marchesa are by now the stuff of red-carpet legend. With their layers of beaded tulle, gilded embroidery, and intricate lace they're the very embodiment of romance, glamour, and fairy-tale dreams. But what happens when the clock strikes midnight and it's time to head back to reality? What, prey tell, does the Marchesa woman wear then? Surely not raggedy sweatpants.

With the introduction of new contemporary line Marchesa Voyage, Chapman and Craig aim to solve that issue. Priced from $150 to $750, the new line consists of daywear separates meant to sit alongside the likes of Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim, but with a decidedly fancier, classic Marchesa spin. That means shift dresses, silk tops, harem pants, and collarless jackets come all dressed up thanks to the addition of sparkling embroidery, lush fur, and scarf-inspired prints.

"We felt like we needed it to have a personality," Chapman said of the line, which also includes 45 styles of embellished shoes. "There would have to be a reason for someone to buy it."

Look for Marchesa Voyage to launch in late 2013.

    Marchesa Spring 2013

Is there a richer source of inspiration than India?
    Marchesa Spring 2013 | Runway

Is there a richer source of inspiration than India? For Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman, who infused the continent's rich silks and ornate embellishments into their colorful Spring 2013 collection for Marchesa, the answer is no.

Every dress that came down the runway featured some kind of decoration that pointed to the subcontinent: tunic and slim trousers cut from a pale gold brocade were embroidered and jeweled at their hems, and the silver cap-sleeved gown that Carolyn Murphy wore in the show was covered in lace. This was a literal interpretation of India, punched up with '60s shapes (cape sleeves, anyone?) and the energy of a glamorous Bollywood production.

It's only natural that last week's news of the upcoming Target and Neiman Marcus CFDA designer collaboration would be followed by an all-out marketing blitz — and now, it's finally begun. First up: this just-released and pretty intriguing behind-the-scenes glimpse at the collaboration's starting point, which, logically, included lots of meetings in colorfully decorated studios and lots of fabric, print, and sketch reviews. The video shows all that, plus offers cameo appearances by nearly every one of the collaboration's key players, including — but not limited to — Diane von Furstenberg, Ken Downing, Eddie Borgo, Georgina Chapman, Robert Rodriguez, Tracy Reese, Stacey Bendet, and Prabal Gurung. See it all below, and keep those eyes peeled for any clues as to what the 50-piece Holiday collection might actually look like.

Marchesa Confirms Plan For Contemporary Line

It's official: Marchesa has teamed up with Li & Fung USA to launch a lower-priced diffusion line.

It's official: Marchesa has teamed up with Li & Fung USA to launch a lower-priced diffusion line. Though plans are still in their infancy — and the new line has yet to be named — the brand confirms that the line will include printed and embroidered daywear, as well as accessories. All will be priced from $150 to $750, with a projected launch date of Pre-Fall 2012.

"We have always had a vision for Marchesa to be a lifestyle brand," Designer Georgina Chapman explained. "We have been so specific for such a long time, and the idea to broaden out to a different consumer, and to our same consumer as well." Chapman also added that she was "hoping Marchesa will have something to offer that is very different from what's on the floor at present."
