Herve Leger by Max Azria Runway Fall 2012

Taking us beyond the label's bandage dress, Max Azria delivered his signature sexy with rich equestrian details and a new sense of strength for Fall. For every curve-conscious silhouette, the strapped bodices and gladiator-inspired footwear counter with militant, almost dominatrix-feeling toughness. If it takes a confident woman to pull off Léger's more typical body-con wear, for this season's offerings — complete with leather harnesses and fur detailing — only the fiercest of fashion enthusiasts need apply.

  • Trends: Fetish, harnesses, leather, fur.
  • Colors: Black, white, nude, burgundy.
  • Key Piece: The white maxi paired with the fur-trimmed black leather harness.
  • Accessories: Slick mirrored clutches, gladiator-style knee-high boots with shin guards, open-toe ankle boots.
  • Who Would Wear It: Hervé's fans; the risk-taker with a taste for sexier fare.

Herve Leger by Max Azria Runway 2012 Fall

>> The leather harnesses that made an occasional appearance in the Hervé Léger Pre-Fall collection were out in full force for Fall 2012. They came in nearly every incarnation — brown, black, metallic, corset-like, or full-torso — and adorned nearly every look. They added an element of toughness to the line's ubiquitous bandage dresses, which, this season, came patterned in geometric panels, emblazoned with crystals, or spliced with intricate prints. Also adding toughness: strict leather vests, jet-black fur, and laser-cut fabrics.

Herve Leger by Max Azria Spring 2012

For Spring 2012, Max Azria showed his signature body-conscious silhouettes, this time re-imagined with textural intrigue and gorgeous tribal accents. Each model hit the runway in her curve-hugging, metallic-foil confection like a soldier — complete with militant-inspired gladiator boots to hint at something tougher, more fierce. While the bandage dress dominated, new textures — weaving, braiding, and fringe — gave way to something more tribal-inspired than Young Hollywood. Striking gold ribbing, metal quills, beads, and jacquard and basket weaving on black, nude, gold, silver tones countered leg-baring slits and cutouts, balancing strength with sex appeal in every look.

  • Trends: Metallics, fringe, cutouts, textural braiding and weaving.
  • Colors: White, black, gold, silver.
  • Key Look: White fringed dress with cutout bodice and metal ribbing.
  • Accessories: High-impact knee-high gladiator boots.
  • Who Would Wear It: The ultra-sexy and the very edgy, like Gisele Bundchen and Rihanna; front-rowers Jessica Szohr and Katie Cassidy.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Herve Leger by Max Azria

Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week: Herve Leger by Max Azria

Herve Leger's models marched down the runway in signature bandage dresses, but just in case you thought those weren't badass enough, now there's leather and metal hardware to contend with. Show notes likened the heavy metal detail to an "inimitable suit of armor," and indeed the women looked like warriors with their slicked-back, long hair that wasn't unlike a chic mullet. The palette was neutral, sticking mostly to black, beige, nude, and white, and there was one interesting houndstooth print. Now to armor: there were plates of leather studs, gold and silver chains, and thick gold rectangular buckle chains. These weren't loosely hanging, as that would contradict the point of a Herve Leger dress. It was all bonded to the bandage dresses, some with cutouts, making for a futuristic vision of female warriors. • Trends: Hardware, warrior chic, metal, leather details.
    • Colors: Black, cream, beige, nude.
    • Key Looks: Nude with gold hardware was a strong combination; a cropped tan hair calf jacket.
    • Accessories: Sandals and boots with hardware.
    • Who Would Wear It: Tough sexpots; celebs like Kim Kardashian will eat this up.
