Houndstooth

Houndstooth has its shining moment every Fall, so if you haven't dabbled with the classic print yet, now is the time. But before you checker yourself out, take a gander at three celebrity trendsetters and how they recently rocked houndstooth. Kelly Osbourne carried this Jil Sander houndstooth clutch ($270) with her bright colorblock ensemble at New York Fashion Week Spring 2013, Gwen Stefani threw on a houndstooth Stella McCartney blazer over her silky black jumpsuit in London, and Leigh Lezark sported a blue House of Holland houndstooth top with black jeans at the designer's show at London Fashion Week. Inspired by these celebs, we set off to find our favorite houndstooth pieces for Fall. Shop everything from Kelly's exact clutch to checkered blazers, tops, skirts, leggings, and more.

We're in love with this season's infatuation with '50s chic in the way of pencil skirts, sheath dresses, and, most recently spotted on celebs, houndstooth prints. The traditional check pattern, which dates all the way back to the 1800s, was recently spotted on Jayma Mays, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kim Kardashian, all showing fresh variations on how you can wear the trend this Fall. Jayma recently worked it in a casual ensemble pairing a Rachel Zoe houndstooth blazer with a cute ASOS horse-print sweater, fitted Bec + Bridge skirt, and pumps — perfect for a day at the office. Gwyneth provided inspiration for a high-contrast polished look wearing a Stella McCartney coat with red peep-toe booties. We love how the coat easily doubles as a jacket and dress. For a more downtown cool aesthetic, just look to Kim's black separates, thigh-high Christian Louboutin boots, and a tan houndstooth cape. In honor of New York Fashion Week, we've turned our regular Look of the Day into one filled with inspiration for the shows. If you're lucky enough to be there at the tents, here's a chic outfit — courtesy of Dessert Plate Design — that will likely get you on the best-dressed list. It starts with a simple camel sweater and black tights, then gets belted for pizzazz. But it's her houndstooth coat, sprung stylishly over her shoulders, which really elevates the look. She looks about ready to hit the streets of NYC!

After last week's tumultuous holiday episode on Gossip Girl, things finally get back to normal for the Upper East Siders. Poor Blair, her mom is making the big move to Paris and has left her by her lonesome in NYC. While contemplating her newfound freedom, she struck a contemplative pose in a dramatic oversized collar coat, Alexander McQueen houndstooth top, and button-front pencil skirt. Cap-toe pumps, textured tights and Valentino bag add extra pizazz to her polish. Don't worry Blair, you'll prevail like you always do.

I'm loving this houndstooth cape that Emma Thompson is sporting in Pirate Radio. Houndstooth, which is characterized by a duotone textile pattern comprised of broken checks, is traditionally seen in black and white, but other color patterns are also common.

Inspired by Emma's fab cape, I looked for more housewares-oriented houndstooth. One of my favorites is this Houndstooth Accent Chair (on sale for $749). Its sleek black arms are a great accent to the nubbier pattern of the fabric.

Rheartsfashion, aka houndstooth hottie, knows how to stand out — just throw on anything houndstooth. Her outerwear looks a lot like the coat I featured, right? So as not to be too colorless, she wore a mustard-colored top underneath. Good thinking; houndstooth and mustard are quite a match.
