J.Crew's Tom Mora on Holiday Dressing, Party Pants, and Playing With Color

When it comes to styling up a polished yet playful party look, nobody does it quite like J.Crew — and with invitations coming in left and right, we thought it necessary to tap into the brand's signature quirky-cool aesthetic for the season ahead.

When it comes to styling up a polished yet playful party look, nobody does it quite like J.Crew — and with invitations coming in left and right, we thought it necessary to tap into the brand's signature quirky-cool aesthetic for the season ahead. We chatted with Tom Mora, J.Crew's head of women's design, to hear about the latest collection and get his expert tips on holiday party dressing — and boy, did we get a wealth of inspiration. Tom gave us his advice on taking a look from work to play, his favorite cocktail dress alternatives, and even gave us the inside scoop on the gifts that make creative director Jenna Lyons smile. See what he had to say below.

FabSugar: A lot of us end up going to holiday events straight from work — what are your tips for making an office look party-ready?
Tom Mora: There are a couple things that I think are easy fixes: throwing on a statement necklace or pair of earrings does an incredible job of making an outfit feel really special. In the same vein, we have really gorgeous suede pumps in the most exquisite colors, and it's really fun to walk into a party in a more muted black or gray outfit and then have people look down and see a bright shoe! I also think a really great lipstick color — a really red or poppy-colored lip — looks amazing and is an easy switch-up.

There are a million parties to go to all season, and we tend to get into our somber, dark clothes — but there's lots of color out there, and it's a great opportunity to experiment with brighter tones and mix and match them with hues like seafoam green, icy lilac, and citrus. Don't shy away from colors that you think don't work on you — those rules were made to be broken!

J.Crew Spring 2013

J.Crew Spring 2013 | Runway

Tom Mora and Jenna Lyons make a pretty great pair: Mora, with his clever eye for spritely detail, and Lyons, with her crazy-cool mixing skills. The duo has managed to make the brand's presentation a must-see now for nearly every Lincoln Center attendee. Case in point: today, even Solange Knowles stopped by.

So what is it that everyone is so excited to see? Well, the clothes, for one. And the shoes, bags, and accessories for two, three, and four. With their playful colors and wearable shapes that fuse sporty prep with punchy modernity, they're quite the knockouts. This season's batch was no exception. And the way they're styled up and mixed around, well, that's always inspiring too.

But there's a secondary element to the J.Crew presentation that makes it doubly exciting, and it's this: the simple fact that after nearly a week of scrambling around from show to show, ogling and analyzing the most luxurious of clothes, there's nothing more refreshing than walking into a room and seeing a whole wall of looks that, come next Spring, you know could easily be yours.

J.Crew Spring 2013

Bright colors, embellishments, and prints were in full effect at J.Crew's Spring presentation.

Bright colors, embellishments, and prints were in full effect at J.Crew's Spring presentation. Needless to say, we want every single piece. Head of women's design Tom Mora showed off the brand's usual penchant for bright colors, but this time added more dimension to the collection via strong embellishments and a mix of both bold and subdued patterns. The results? A mashup of perfectly styled looks like jacquard sheath dresses paired with neon yellow parkas, nautical pants with floral embellished oxford shirts, and green floral trouser with striped tees. There were also a heavy helping of shoes and adornments to fawn over — thick ankle-strap pumps, floral printed clutches, neon bags, colorful jeweled earrings, stacked bracelets are just a few of the highlights from their accessories lineup.

  • Trends: Bold prints, neon, jacquard, embellishment, sportif.
  • Colors: Citron, cobalt blue, pink, white, green, seafoam, navy.
  • Key Piece: It's so hard to choose, but if we had to, the green floral print trousers – also worn by Jenna Lyons at the presentation — and striped tee combo.
  • Accessories: Cap-toe pumps, floral printed pumps, leather ankle-strap pumps, neon and printed clutches and bags, geek glasses, statement jeweled earrings.
  • Who Should Wear It: Who likes to mix and match prints? Solange Knowles, Alexa Chung, and Michelle Obama.

Caroline Issa and Virginie Mouzat Tapped For J.Crew's Fall 2012 Ads

J.Crew eschewed models for very glamorous real people like Tank magazine fashion director Caroline Issa and Le Figaro deputy editor Virginie Mouzat for its Fall 2012 campaign.
Caroline Issa, Virginie Mouzat in J.Crew's Fall 2012 Ads

J.Crew eschewed models for very glamorous real people like Tank magazine fashion director Caroline Issa and Le Figaro deputy editor Virginie Mouzat for its Fall 2012 campaign. The ads include written messages directed at people who "recognize quality and appreciate the small details in life," according to a spokesman for the retailer. Issa's ad, for example, says, "You speak softly and carry a loud bag," while Mouzat's says, "You have a passion for Italian shoes and spaghetti westerns." All the images end with the line "We know you're out there," which is intended to let costumers know that J.Crew is committed to providing them with well-made products.

The women's ads, which launched on J.Crew's website Thursday, highlight shoes and handbags. Get a look at all the products — and the women who love them — here in the gallery.
