Look of the Day: Cavalry Chic

Missfox looks like she's ready to battle off the boys in her cavalry chic ensemble.

Missfox looks like she's ready to battle off the boys in her cavalry chic ensemble. Her military shirt is the real thing — gifted from her gramps — and I like how her Ray-Bans complete her look. While the woodsy background is nice, I can easily see her stomping the city streets in this militant fit.

Here's what she has on:

  • Cavalry Shirt: Vintage
  • Henley: Target
  • Pants: Jonathan Saunders for Target
  • Boots: Kors Michael Kors
  • Purse: Louis Vuitton
  • Sunglasses: Ray-Bans

Congrats to missfox!

Beth Ditto To Grace First Cover of Love?

>> Some of Katie Grand's nearest and dearest — Giles Deacon, Agyness Deyn, Alexander McQueen — came out to the Royal Academy in London last night to celebrate the first-ever party for her new magazine Love.  Guests sipped tea and participated in a treasure hunt, but the night's big attention-getter was Beth Ditto — she's rumored to be Love's first cover star.  No confirmation yet — but a good space to watch might be the magazine's under-the-radar blog, which so far chronicles the move to a new office, visits to showrooms, and Giles holding scotch eggs over his eyes.*image: source

Jonathan Saunders Fall 08 Deliveries

Jonathan Saunders is one of those designers who we love on the runway and question on the shelves--perhaps someday we will be wise enough to resist that tendency.

Jonathan Saunders is one of those designers who we love on the runway and question on the shelves--perhaps someday we will be wise enough to resist that tendency. Seeing the runway images right up against the clothing definitely helps in this regard (which is why we wish more e-commerce sites would do this) because it reminds us to stay confident and resist the urge for traditional sex appeal. After all, they both might color block, but he 'aint no Herve Leger. To see the entire Jonathan Saunders Fall 08 collection, click here.

Look of the Day: Art Girl

I spot lilprisci in a piece from Target's Jonathan Saunders collection.

I spot lilprisci in a piece from Target's Jonathan Saunders collection. She's a bona fide art girl in her abstract print dress. I like how she paired the dress with dark leggings and matching booties. Mod-girl and marvelous!

Here's what she has on:

  • Dress: Jonathan Saunders for Target
  • Leggings: Target
  • Oxfords: H&M
  • Earrings: Unknown

Congrats to lilprisci!

Yves Saint Laurent

Maybe the next trend is stay the same.
Maybe the next trend is stay the same. Yves Saint Laurent did essentially the same collection for eight seasons in a row. I like that idea. I think, on some level, we could all use a break.

Style For Style: Using Colorblock to Look Slender

When I first saw model Masha Tyelna in this Dazed & Confused editorial (center), I freaked out: I thought her waist was freakishly small.

When I first saw model Masha Tyelna in this Dazed & Confused editorial (center), I freaked out: I thought her waist was freakishly small. Upon closer inspection, I realized it's just a fashion illusion created by the black side panels on her strapless dress. Phew! Although her look is over-dramatized, we can take away a thing or two from it, much like how we learned from Leighton Meester that racerbacks can make you appear curvier.

Saunders Shows A Perky Pollini

Scottish designer Joanthan Saunders is having a truly excellent Fall, his Target Go International collection will be hitting stores in October, his own Spring 2009 collection was a voluminous expansion of his usually tailored vision, and his first collection for Pollini was a pleasantly colorful and commercial interpretation of the brand.

Pollini's parent company, Aeffe, will no doubt be pleased to see just how well Saunders has been able to combine his own expertize in prints and tailoring with Pollini's rich history of vibrant hued design.

The collection was just a little more girlie than typical Saunders with frills, chiffon dresses and polka dots but it was in the graphic colorblock appeal of green and purple or orange and pink that we saw the designers personal style shine within the classic Pollini fair. We were impressed that Saunders strayed from his preference for sheen and bold bright colors, instead tempering the impact of the collection with more muted hues and even black and gray. This left us feeling the collection was solidly in touch with the preferences of today's consumers who may as it turns out be into Italian fashion for somewhat more prosaic reasons: it lasts.

Jonathan Saunders's First Pollini Collection: The Reviews Are In

>> Jonathan Saunders used colors aplenty and frothy, full skirts in his namesake Spring 2009 collection, and there was more where that came from for his first outing at Pollini.  Complemented by Nicholas Kirkwood's minibags and high heels for the brand, Saunders sent out 27 looks that kept the press interested.

WWD raved: "a promising start of pretty clothes with plenty of commercial appeal"; Vogue UK wholeheartedly approved: "[Pollini] built its reputation on strong colour and prints — and Saunders proved today that he was without doubt the best choice to embrace that history"; and Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune also saw good in the match: "slimmer tailoring, still with graphic patterns, was a less dynamic take and jersey dresses were too complex in their asymmetry. But this was a clear start for Saunders."  Now just one important thing remains to be seen — can the collection sell (to editors and consumers)?
