>> For the first time, Los Angeles Fashion Week is without former sponsor IMG.  Things were up in the air until early this month, when a weekend of runway shows was announced and tickets were made open to the public — for a price.

Last night, Gen Art hosted three of the most promising talents of the week(end): Raquel Allegra, whose shredded t-shirts have been spotted on Kate Lanphear and launched a DIY epidemic — she added hand-dyed leather pants and leggings for Fall 2009 and promises expansion into cashmere and silks, shoes and accessories next; Grai, the three-year-old line designed by one-time Rick Owens student Maya Yogev (whose Owens training clearly inspired her full-length skirts and draped leather jackets); and Society for Rational Dress, whose designer Corinne Grassini launched a capsule collection exclusive to Barneys last month — the Fall 2009 collection features her signature harness detailing and a chain-and-leather breastplate.

The Comeback Kid: Trish Goff

If being an outlaw looks this good — then what are you waiting for?

If being an outlaw looks this good — then what are you waiting for? Elle's Outlaw Country editorial features comeback model Trish Goff, and what a smokin' resurgence it is. The 32-year-old has the tendency to model pretty — she once worked for Victoria's Secret and Ann Taylor — but I'm glad she chose this more coarse route. Naturally, Elle editor and stylist Kate Lanphear lent her rock 'n roll touch via stacked jewels, fringe vests, studded jackets, and western-style denim — visit Elle to welcome back the comeback kid.

Super Styley Beauty Icon: Kate Lanphear

Kate Lanphear is the style director of Elle, and she is also the number-one stunner in my book.

Kate Lanphear is the style director of Elle, and she is also the number-one stunner in my book. She reminds me of the coolest girl in high school, the one who listened to Joy Division and drove a crappy vintage car and read The Waste Land at lunchtime. She makes me think of Watts from Some Kind of Wonderful gone fashion.

You'll usually find Kate wearing spiked bracelets with next season's Lanvin and Balmain, but you won't find her wearing much makeup. (Seeing her wear smoky eye makeup in this Stylista clip was a surprise.) Instead, she sports flawless skin, a bit of lip balm, and her signature look — cropped hair in a lightning-shock shade of blonde. It's not a look that everyone can pull off, obviously, but every time I see her at fashion week, it takes all of my composure not to run to the nearest Duane Reade and buy a hair-bleaching kit. Are you crushing on her white-light-white-heat style, too?

Bergdorf Goodman

Jason Wu, Hottest Ticket in Town?

>> Isabel Toledo may have shelled out for that lemongrass fabric she used to make Michelle Obama's inaugural day dress — it rings in at $500 a yard — but it's Jason Wu who will be reaping the Fashion Week benefits of an Obama nod.In fact, Wu's show "might be the hottest ticket in town" — right after Marc Jacobs — according to The New York Observer.  Elle is sending seven more staffers than it did to Wu's Spring 2009 show — including editor-in-chief Robbie Myers, creative director Joe Zee, and style director Kate Lanphear.  Bergdorf Goodman is bringing its entire buying team, in addition to fashion director Linda Fargo and senior women's fashion director Roopal Patel, who attended last season.  Anna Wintour is sure to attend again, especially since she was already front row for the Spring 2009 show.

The Best Thing About Stylista Last Night: Kate Lanphear

>> Between the reviews yesterday and the original preview clips, I wasn't expecting much from Stylista — except maybe the inane tasks and overblown drama that was readily served up.  Toward the end of the pilot episode, however, there was a nice cameo from Elle style director Kate Lanphear, who appeared to help with the judging.  She wore her trademark black and white, but even she couldn't escape the excessive makeup treatment before going on camera — it was strange to watch, since Kate is so striking in her usual minimal-to-no makeup.  It was just another symbol of how unreal this reality show is — Kate may have played along, but she barely talked, and my guess is, she would have rather been somewhere else.
