If you're looking for a fun runway look that's still totally wearable, look no further than Milly's Spring 2014 collection. "The girls look like they came out of a steam room," explained Romy Soleimani for Beauty.com. She created the dewy skin using Joanna Vargas Skincare Rejuvenating Serum ($100) on the eyelids and along the cheekbones and brow bones. But the cornerstone of the look was the matte red gradient lip, which was created using the Kevyn Aucoin Lip Pencil in Cerise ($25) in the inner part of the mouth and then dusted with an orange-red blush.
Kevin Ryan with R Session Tools created the easy-to-do bun. "The modern fabrics feel functional, so I wanted to create a style that looks like the girls just threw up their hair with a sense of urgency," he explained. The high messy bun had an element of texture, and Ryan made sure to leave some of the ends out. The nails by Katie Hughes of Butter London featured a white moon on top of a bare nail — "floating nail art," as Hughes likes to call it.
When James Pecis for Bumble and Bumble tells you that you can style your hair without a hairbrush, you listen. And backstage at Yigal Azrouël's Spring 2014 show, that's exactly what was happening. The ethereal, wispy chignons he was twisting backstage were created by raking the hair back with fingers and matting the hair down at the crown — no brush needed. "It's hard because we're trained to do perfection, and it's hard to break that habit, but I don't want to see any lines," Pecis said. "One of the girls looked too smooth, and it's better when you smash the hair together, so we had to fix her."
Lucia Pica for Kevyn Aucoin focused on the skin for the makeup look. After each model was prepped with a hyperbaric oxygen minifacial, courtesy of Intraceuticals, Pica got to work with the makeup: glossy eyes, luminous skin, and a matte nude lip. The nails were a new take on the French — a nude base with a thin black tip, covered with a matte top coat.
It was all about the juxtaposition of edge and femininity at Honor's Spring 2014 show, and this was obvious in everything from the hair to the nails. James Pecis, lead hairstylist for Beauty.com, wanted their hair to look like the girls had "taken a roll in the hay." Tiny flowers dotted down into an asymmetrical ponytail that was high on texture. "We've got a semismooth ponytail, and when that ends, there's a lot of curls," Pecis explained.
Nails were painted a champagne pink dubbed La Vie en Rose (available Spring 2014) from Deborah Lippmann, and they were sprinkled with rhinestones to create an easy half-french manicure. But the sexiness came from the short stiletto shape, which created a literal edge. Romy Soleimani worked with Kevyn Aucoin makeup to conceptualize a soft, smoky, feminine look. "It's like looking through gauze," she explained.
Some beauty items, like drugstore lip glosses and certain types of mascara, work so well that there's no need to spend more than a few bucks on them. However, there are certain products on the market that perform so amazingly well, they're worth the investment. Check out what we at Team Bella think about what five upscale beauty items warrant the purchase.
