Anna Sui Mourns the Loss of Supermodels on the Runway, Made Karl Lagerfeld Complain Once Upon a Time

>> Stunt casting has really become part of the fashion show DNA in the past couple of seasons, but Anna Sui's runway casts have always boasted at least a few special girls — sometimes even a few supermodels. Though now, she says, "It’s a different time. We are now going through a period of a lot of Eastern European. It’s more about their look than their personalities. It was the most terrifying thing to do fittings with supermodels, because they would come in and look at your Polaroid board and count how many outfits they had, what order they came out in, and who were they next to. They would say things like, 'She is taller than me, and I am not coming out after her,' 'How come she has three outfits, and I only have two,' and 'I want that outfit.' They’d literally pull the Polaroid off the board and say they want to wear this. There was a reason they were supermodels, though. When they put on an outfit, everyone was floored."

That includes Karl Lagerfeld — who took notice of Sui's dresses before she even had her first runway show. As Sui tells it, "Linda [Evangelista] and Naomi [Campbell] went to the couture shows the Summer before my first show, and they were wearing my cotton lace baby-doll dresses. All of a sudden, I started getting phone calls from Paris, and other models like Helena Christensen were asking for the dress. I heard that Karl [Lagerfeld] was complaining. Everyone came into the couture fitting wearing my dresses, and he was like 'Who is this Anna?'"

Linda Evangelista, Billionaire Peter Morton Have Split

>> Linda Evangelista, 45, and billionaire Hard Rock founder Peter Morton, 64, who began dating in late 2006 when Evangelista was pregnant, split at the end of the summer after a series of disagreements, Page Six reports.

According to one family source, "Some members of Peter's family were not too fond of her, and were dismayed when [Evangelista] appeared around last Thanksgiving with a large diamond ring on her finger. But the marriage never happened. Peter is very settled in Malibu and loves LA, while Linda liked to spend time in Canada and with her friends in New York."

Evangelista has never said who the father of her son, Augustin James, is, although it's rumored to be PPR CEO Francois-Henri Pinault, who is now married to and has a child with Salma Hayek. Page Six cites sources confirming that Pinault is the father of Evangelista's child — a fact which has caused some friction between Evangelista and Hayek. But one insider says: "They get along for appearances and when the kids are together."

Evangelista's agent declined comment last night, saying: "Linda has no press agent." Morton's and Hayek's reps also declined comment.

>> Steven Meisel co-opted the Twitter phenomenon for the last Vogue Italia issue of the decade — December 2009 — and rechristened Twitpic "Meiselpic" for his purposes.  Inside the issue he wrote to his 20 model "followers" under a blurred portrait of himself — surprising, as the photographer is reclusive and does not like to be photographed himself —"Feeling a touch swine flu . . . so not coming to work today. I'm sending you some clothes . . . wear what you like, Meiselpic it back to me. xxSteven."  What comes next — and is featured on the cover — are twenty pages of model self-portraits in the style of Twitpic.  Lara Stone took the below picture of herself and "Twittered" underneath: "I love my new boobs. Werk!!"  A pregnant Gisele snaps herself in lingerie, covering up her bump, and "Tweets": "Privacy is beautiful!" And Freja Beha Erichsen, who's not known to be a Meisel favorite, makes a surprise appearance, as well.

In a commission by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, PierPaolo Ferrari photographed Linda Evangelista for W magazine's annual art issues. Styled by Camilla Nickerson, Evangelista wears sweat-stained Rena Lange while backed into a corner, plays with chickens in Valentino Haute Couture, crawls through a cardboard wall on all fours in Carolina Herrera, and  has a religious moment in Chanel.

In an interview with W's editors' blog, Evangelista said of the aforementioned chicken sitting, "We were working around the chickens, not me. The chickens go to sleep at dusk—so they said, 'If you don't hurry up, we're going to lose them!' There are moments in your life when you say, How did I get here? And it happened to me in that moment."

At last night's amfAR fund-raising event in Milan, stars showed up to help stir up cash for AIDS research. And while everyone was no doubt looking forward to a HIV-free future, two women looked to the past for their retro style. Dita Von Teese dazzled in her trademark '50s-style pinup glamour, whereas Linda Evangelista looked like a sophisticated '30s film star. As Dita tweeted, the event raised $1.1 million dollars — a huge success. Of these two vintage-styled beauties, whose look do you prefer?
