A Softer Side of Balenciaga for Fall 2009

>> Fall 2009 has turned out to be the season of new for Nicolas Ghesquiere and Balenciaga: new show location, new softness, new openness to models of color.  Instead of showing at the brand's headquarters on the Left Bank as usual, Ghesquiere took the show to Hotel Crillon, with its gold and cream atmosphere and the models walking through French doors.  The official blame for the move goes to neighbors around the HQ, who apparently didn't like the loud soundtrack, but some wondered if it wasn't prompted by Balmain's move to the Ritz this season — a little venue rivalry?

Nonetheless, the typically whitewashed Balenciaga runway felt a little influx of models of color this season; Liya Kebede opened, and Chanel Iman walked, her first time for the label — last time a model of color walked, as far as I can tell, was Fall 2006 — Liya Kebede.  Newcomers Johanna Kneppers and twin Gwen Loos made their first runway appearances.  As for the clothes, Ghesquiere took away the recent robo-chic, instead experimenting with draping and satin — two techniques he admitted he'd never really worked with before.  The result is garnering '80s Yves Saint Laurent and Dynasty comparisons, and perhaps a little uncertainty, but there's definitely a future for the high-slit, splotchy-printed dresses — Francois-Henri Pinault thought so, he was there with new wife Salma Hayek in the front row.

Burberry

>> THE MODELIZER —There's been a big question to where and when the much buzzed-about newcomer Rose Cordero would show up — and now we know.  Her runway debut came at Burberry today — she ended a black model drought at Burberry that as far as I can tell dated back to Spring 2005, with Liya Kebede — to a positive reaction: "everyone [is] loving the extraordinary, new black girl with the perfectly clipped afro."

Eight Models for May 2009 Vogue Cover, Including Raquel Zimmermann and Natasha Poly

>> That May 2008 Vogue multiple model cover featuring "today's best models" that will be published just in time for this year's model-themed Costume Institute Gala?  It looks like we've got some names — and a number.  Brazil's RG Vogue reports that eight lucky girls will be featured on the cover — and they've already got five models attached: Raquel Zimmermann (who other sources have confirmed), Natalia Vodianova, Liya Kebede — all Vogue favorites — plus Natasha Poly and Isabeli Fontana. My best guess for the remaining three?  Kate Moss has to be somewhere in there — she is co-chairing the Gala, after all, and then there's the "unexpected choice" that The Imagist hinted at, who's never been in Vogue at all — a clue that doesn't apply to any of the aforementioned.  As for the third unknown, no clues whatsoever.*image: source

Who Wore It Better? Phillip Lim Navy Ruffle Dress

Many of you adored the Phillip Lim navy ruffle dress Lindsay Price wore recently, and for good reason.

Many of you adored the Phillip Lim navy ruffle dress Lindsay Price wore recently, and for good reason. The folded, tiered ruffles, the poofy shoulders — they're beyond charming. Apparently, model Liya Kebede loved it as much as we did, because she wore it out on a cold night in NYC. These ladies are wearing the same dress in the most opposite ways. Lindsay is party-ready in red suede Mary Janes and red lips. Liya, not so much. She's bundled to the max with black tights, black boots, and a black coat. Whose look are you digging more — Lindsay's playful version or Liya's moody take?

Wang Wins 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund

>> For its fifth anniversary, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund went with the obvious choice, naming Alexander Wang the recipient of $200,000 plus a year of mentoring last night.  Vogue favorite Vena Cava and a less expected choice, milliner Albertus Swanepoel of Albertus Quartus, were both named runners-up and will receive $50,000 plus a business mentor.  The night's keynote speaker, John Galliano, and his date Charlize Theron were seated next to Anna Wintour and presented the top honors to a teary-eyed Alexander Wang, who said his thank yous onstage as John Galliano rubbed his arm in comfort.

Top hats seemed to be the order of the evening — Julie Gilhart and John Galliano each sported one, the latter with a daisy chain, and Agyness Deyn had on a squished version — while carrot pants and one-shouldered dresses also received numerous nods.  Plenty of models are already back in town from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: Anne Vyalitsyna came with Costello Tagliapietra, Maryna Linchuk with Rag & Bone, Doutzen Kroes with Irene Neuwirth, and Arlenis Sosa Pena with Rogan.

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL —Those who enjoyed Liya Kebede and Raquel Zimmermann as Lanvin girls, cherish it while it lasts — they won't be back for Spring 2009.  Although no casts have been revealed, Steven Meisel shot the new Lanvin campaign in New York last week, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin shot Yves Saint Laurent a few weeks ago with a very "California" theme, Mario Testino is doing Versace in LA in early November, and Gucci will be photographed this week in Miami.

Fab Ad: Tiffany & Co. Fall '08

Tiffany & Co. is trying out a new look this season with a sweet new campaign.

Tiffany & Co. is trying out a new look this season with a sweet new campaign. The ads, shot by Michael Thompson, feature models Liya Kebede, Shalom Harlow, Lily Cole, and Sasha Pivovarova. All different, all beautiful. I like how Liya emits a commanding, graceful presence in her fancy tulle dress and dazzling diamonds. While Shalom rocks it '50s-style in a black fedora and mixed metals, Lily looks young and bohemian in a modern selection of beads and baubles. Check out that big wavy hair! And we can't forget sweet Sasha. Though her diamond-studded bangles take precedent, I can't help but be drawn into her captivating eyes. Are you digging this new look?

Fab Ad: Lanvin Fall '08

Lanvin took a tale from the dark side for their Fall campaign.

Lanvin took a tale from the dark side for their Fall campaign. I have to say, this is simply too dark. The Spring campaign was just as creepy chic, but bubbled with the jewel hued dresses we have now seen oodles of times. With the similar dark backdrop, the black clothes blend right in. Bummer, the serious but sexy clothes are hard to see. I love the Liya and Raquel duo, though. They look as if they are strutting through some dark forest, but that's about it.

Sasha Pivovorova, Lily Cole, Liya Kebede, and Shalom Harlow Take Their Breakfast at Tiffany's

>> Now that Prada has released Sasha Pivovarova from her campaign exclusive, it's fun to see where else she pops up. The latest? She joins flower child Lily Cole, opera-going Liya Kebede, and a chic Shalom Harlow in the Fall 2008 Tiffany & Co. cast, looking like an updated Audrey Hepburn.  Word on the street is that Hye Rim Park also makes an appearance in the set, but we'll have to wait a little longer on that one.
