W Magazine and Carine Roitfeld Celebrate "The Client"

>> Last night, Stefano Tonchi and Carine Roitfeld unveiled "The Client," a 13-minute documentary focusing on Roitfeld, at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The film was produced after director Loic Prigent followed Roitfeld around the most recent Paris couture week — to the shows, couture fittings with everyone from Azzedine Alaia to Jean Paul Gaultier, and then finally at a W shoot for which she models the couture looks she chose.

Watch the full film — in which Roitfeld jokes that couture models are "fat" compared to her and then calls up Karl Lagerfeld to help her decide which Chanel dress to wear for the shoot — below.

As reported, he's back for a second round, having followed Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Jeremy Scott, Narciso Rodriguez, Peter Copping at Nina Ricci, and Donatella Versace at Versace during the Fall 2010 season. The new season premieres Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 10 PM. Prigent noted, “We explored the energy of New York with young labels like Alexander Wang, grandes dames like Diane von Furstenberg, energy and humor with Jeremy Scott, and couturelike precision with Narciso Rodriguez. In Paris, you see the sweetness and romanticism of Nina Ricci, and the extreme everything of Donatella Versace in Milan. All those houses are very different, which has made it such a crazy experience.” [Full Frontal Fashion]

Loic Prigent Is Back, Documenting Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, and Jeremy Scott

>> The Sundance Channel is on a mission to amp up their fashion coverage. They just launched Catwalk Countdown, a series of ten one-minute online videos highlighting designers like Erin Fetherston, Vena Cava, Lyn Devon, Chris Benz — Benz talks how he produces 98 percent of his collection within a two-block radius of his Manhattan studio, for instance — and now they're bringing back popular fashion documentarist Loic Prigent for a second season of his The Day Before series.

Prigent, who captured the likes of Sonia Rykiel, Proenza Schouler, Fendi, and Jean Paul Gaultier for the show's first season, is currently in New York, where he will film Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, and Jeremy Scott each in the 36 hours leading up to their shows.  Prigent has been granted "full access," he told The Cut, "[because] we are discreet . . . [so designers] forget we are even there."

Loic Prigent's Habillees Videos Capture Anna Wintour Implying that Carine Roitfeld Should Better Support Young French Designers

>> During the Spring 2010 season, Loic Prigent, director of documentaries Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton, Signe Chanel, and The Day Before, and French TV personality Mademoiselle Agnes teamed up to film Habillees, chronicling the search for the next French design talent.

The Sundance Channel uploaded the six Habillees webisodes this week, and the hour's worth of content features everyone from John Galliano taking his runway bow to Karl Lagerfeld waltzing to Nicholas Ghesquiere saying of his work: "Wearing Balenciaga is a choice. These clothes aren't easy to wear. They're not meant to be easy to wear."

When Pierre Berge, former partner of Yves Saint Laurent and president of ANDAM, which annually bestows 160,000 euros to designers under 40 seeking to expand their businesses in France — most recently awarded were Giles Deacon for 2009 and Gareth Pugh for 2008 — was asked by Mademoiselle Agnes who the next big French talent is, he replied: "No one."

But perhaps best of all are the scenes with Anna Wintour, who is shown exiting the Rochas show flanked by two bodyguards, one who brusquely nudges a woman out of the way.  Just after, as Anna descends a set of stairs, the other bodyguard turns a flashlight on her feet so she can walk without fear of tripping in her heels.  Later, Agnes catches up with Anna before the Balmain show to ask her how important she thinks it is to support young designers. Notice the subtle dig at Carine Roitfeld in Anna's response:

I think it's totally important for all of us in the American fashion industry to support the young designers, and I think that's why New York's become such a vibrant fashion center, because people go there not only to see the Donna Karans of the world but a whole new generation. I'm just so sorry that there isn't something like that in Paris that's similar. I think that they should look for the younger generation here [in Paris] as well. Not only New York but London really supports their young talent; Franca Sozzani at Italian Vogue supports the young Italian designers, and I think when France is so known for its fashion industry — for them not to be reaching out to help younger people today is really a shame. [Agnes: "And there's space in your pages for them."] There's space in everybody's pages.

Through his ten years of filming fashion, he's come up with designers' "number one enemy in fashion journalism now" — being asked 'What is your inspiration?': "They really hate it when you ask it. I’ve said it one million times. You have to say it, but when I do the documentaries I try to not ask it. Because everyone asks it. Sometimes it’s not something they can articulate. Sometimes it’s not one inspiration but a whole realm of things and feelings. Sometimes it’s not an inspiration at all but it’s just about an obsession." [Speakeasy]

>> Matt Tyrnauer may have gotten ahold of Valentino for The Last Emperor, and RJ Cutler of Anna Wintour for The September Issue, but it's Loic Prigent who has really taken the whole fly-on-the-wall fashion documentary concept by the horns these past few years.  He did Signe Chanel, a five-part series on the creation of Chanel's Fall 2004 couture collection, and the 2007 film Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton, which captures Marc waddling in pigeon costume and finding inspiration for a bag from a collection of pastel macaroons; both Signe Chanel and Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton have been uploaded to YouTube.

His latest project, announced back in June, is The Day Before, set to air for four consecutive nights starting Sept. 10 on the Sundance Channel.  Prigent tracks four design houses — Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel, Fendi, and Jean Paul Gaultier — in the 36 hours before their Fall 2009 ready-to-wear shows, with the exception of Gaultier, who is captured before his Fall 2009 couture show.
