Zero + Maria Cornejo Does Digital Nature for Spring 2010

>> A number of designers this past week have been looking to nature and the organic for inspiration — even if just for a earthy, neutral color palette; Maria Cornejo is one of them.

>> A number of designers this past week have been looking to nature and the organic for inspiration — even if just for a earthy, neutral color palette; Maria Cornejo is one of them. "The dynamic relationship we have with our surroundings; the beautiful tension of organic elements pushing through the cement of an urban landscape are what inspired me most. I love the energy of the city but always feel the pull of nature, so I find myself grabbing moments wherever I can."

With Cindy Sherman front row, she sent out four district sets of looks — black and white noise, wood, grass, and water — referring to the print that pervaded the group; the wood, ocean, and grass digitally-based patterns came from photos Cornejo took with her iPhone.  For the first time, she added a capsule collection of swimwear, but it's the accessories that really caught attention: stiff curves of bent wood belting half the waist, lying around the neck, cuffing the wrist, and a half-sandal, half-bootie shoe.

"No-oo. I guess it's a compliment." [Guardian]

Maria Cornejo spoke out against the sky-high heels we keep seeing on the runway saying that "it's that boys thing about making women into victims"... Zero + Maria Cornejo Pre-Fall 2009

In the most recent issue of The Journal Maria Cornejo talked about her newfound excitement for prints and we are delighted to see so many of them in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection.

In the most recent issue of The Journal Maria Cornejo talked about her newfound excitement for prints and we are delighted to see so many of them in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection. Judging by her statements in the interview and the appearance of print in her Pre-Fall 2009 collection, we can probably expect some great prints from the Fall 2009 collection. That said, all of those fashion gals who depend on Cornejo for their all-black winter uniform will probably still be in good shape--we doubt the designer will abandon her aesthetic completely.

Maria Cornejo Talks About Print

This past weekend we picked up a copy of The Journal and sat down with a cup of coffee to read about designer Maria Cornejo.

This past weekend we picked up a copy of The Journal and sat down with a cup of coffee to read about designer Maria Cornejo. Cornejo was an exile from Pinochet's Chile who grew up and made her name in London back in the 1980's. From there she moved to New York and after attempting to keep a low profile with her tiny Nolita boutique she became, deservedly, a high profile designer all over again. Check out our coverage of the Zero + Maria Cornejo Spring 2009 show right here, and, to purchase a copy of the Journal, click here.
