Sugar and spice and everything nice: that's what the Michael Kors Pre-Fall 2013 woman is made of. Kors examined that classic duality by combining ladylike lace pencil skirts and floral dresses with tougher elements, like a black leather jacket featuring aggressive metal hardware.

Kors found his muse in the actress Scarlett Johansson. "Scarlett takes me to Elizabeth Taylor, which takes me to Ava Gardner, and to Madonna. It's the idea of sugar and spice," he said. That Johansson will star in two productions set in the '50s and '60s this year — Broadway's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and the new Alfred Hitchcock biopic Hitchcock — may have informed his midcentury silhouettes. Mink lapels rested on a round-shouldered black wool coat and a boxy green tweed jacket, and cigarette pants cropped above the ankle abounded where A-line skirts and pencil skirts did not.

The finishing touches in the collection helped drive the point home: leather renditions of the opera glove in black and white and cat-eye sunglasses added punctuation to an already well-articulated collection.

With the end of the world year rearing its head, it's time to weigh in on the best of 2012. Bing.com just reported that Michael Kors, beloved American designer and Project Runway judge, is ranked the No. 1 most searched designer in 2012, knocking down luxury brand Gucci from its previous position as the No. 1 most searched brand of 2011. Many reasons could attribute to this, one being that American brands have received a lot of support this year by big fashion influencers like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Biel, and Michelle Obama (who wore Kors's design on election night). Furthermore, Kors's presence on Project Runway — the designer has been on the show since '04 — has surely gained an audience he previously may not have reached across the world. So who else topped the list as the most searched designers/brands this year? Louis Vuitton nabbed the No. 2 spot, Gucci took No. 3, and Ralph Lauren ranked in as No. 4.
Michael Kors created the perfect rustic look for Fall with his blanket-striped skirt, marl-knit sweater, and platform sandals. In fact, we can easily picture ourselves donning this look for holiday gatherings and family dinners. Needless to say, buying the head-to-toe runway look is a little out of our price range, so we've relied on our expert styling skills to create a similar outfit that's just as nice — but without the steep price tag. Listen up: pair a rustic-looking striped or plaid skirt (it's really more about the color combination and textures here) with a cozy knit and accessorize the look with a wide leather belt and platform sandals. The results are stunning, and we guarantee that you'll be the envy of your next holiday party with this statement look. Shop the look for much, much less below.

Left to right: Full Tilt marled sweater ($27), ASOS check midi skirt ($78), Benefit Benetint cheek and lip stain ($29), Phillip Lim Nashiki wide belt ($137, originally $235), Pour La Victoire Glenna Platform sandal ($285)

When Michael Kors gives style advice, he might just throw in a little relationship advice, too.
Fashion writer Kate Betts asked the designer how he would counsel girls who are trying to keep up with perennially changing trends, and he said she should "take the same approach she takes to guys."
"There's great fling material, and then there's great husband material!" Kors said. "Apply that to your wardrobe and it means invest in the key pieces you'll want to spend time with season after season, the pieces that will help define your style. Don't invest major money in the trendy pieces that will feel old by this time next year. Like dating that guy just for fun — it's not to say you shouldn't do it, just don't sink a lot into it!"
Gwen Stefani was the epitome of street chic in a white-and-black Michael Kors pairing and patent leather Christian Louboutin pumps ($625) while strolling around London. As if the trendsetter's checkered shell and matching pants weren't cool enough, the blond beauty topped her fierce duo with a posh black cape and matching fisherman cap. She finished off her polished look with loose curls and her signature red lip. Channel Gwen's old-school glam with a black-and-white lattice-print top, matching trousers, a cozy cape, and a fisherman hat for date night, or pair these checkered Kelly Wearstler pants ($224, originally $320) with a classic black top, matching cape, and wool topper for a tame take on this flawless style.

Lea Michele attended a Big Brothers Big Sisters gala in Beverly Hills, and while we're normally used to seeing the Glee star in plunging necklines, this time she went a different route in this Michael Kors one-shoulder studded dress ($2,695). On bottom she sported black patent t-strap pumps by Christian Louboutin and kept the rest of her red-carpet look pretty minimal. If you don't yet own a black one-shoulder dress, consider adding Lea's exact one to your wardrobe, or if the price tag is too steep, we also love this one from Lauren Ralph Lauren ($78, originally $130).

Gwyneth Paltrow showed skin in a cutout little black dress designed by Michael Kors at last night's Golden Heart Gala, benefiting the God's Love We Deliver charity, in NYC. She was joined at the charitable event by other Michael Kors-clad celebrities like Karolina Kurkova, a newly brunette Brooklyn Decker, and Anna Wintour. Michael himself had the honor of sitting between Bette Midler and Anna Wintour during dinner. Gwyneth took the stage to introduce Glee creator Ryan Murphy, who made a speech and even asked Bette if she'd make a cameo on Glee — to his relief, she said yes! Michael was also honored at the fete for making a generous gift that will allow God's Love, a nonprofit that delivers meals to the seriously ill, to fund a new building.
