Jenna Lyons on Her Divorce, Mickey Drexler's Loudspeakers, and More

>> Jenna Lyons says she's going through a "confusing" time in her life — but her colleagues at J.Crew are making her transition a little easier.

>> Jenna Lyons says she's going through a "confusing" time in her life — but her colleagues at J.Crew are making her transition a little easier.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Lyons says she's been able to get through leaving her husband, artist Vincent Mazeau, and selling their home in Brooklyn largely because of the support of her friends and co-workers. Her boss Mickey Drexler's in-office announcement system — which she calls "hilarious" — is probably pretty divertive, too. Read on for more from the interview.

On Drexler's announcements: "When he was installing the system, I was like: are you kidding me with this?" she says. "He even checks in from holiday — he's like: 'Hey, I'm in St.-Tropez; it's gorgeous here! Anyway, I'm having lunch at Club 55 and you should see all these people wearing white! We should do more white; it's Summer, do we have enough white?' It's hilarious — I love it."

On her divorce: "I'm adjusting," she says. "It has been hard, you know?" she continues gingerly, "but I will say, through everything, I realize how incredibly fortunate I am. Everyone has been so supportive and understanding; my friends and colleagues have all been amazing. It's certainly been one of the more confusing times of my life, but I'm getting through it."

On curating J.Crew's stores: "I don't want to put a load of pictures of J.Crew models up; people can look at the catalogue for that," she reasons. "You know where you are, hopefully: there's a label on everything. We don't need to tell you about ourselves over and over again; we'd rather share how we feel about art, a movie poster or an installation. It's about trying to make customers feel like they're getting more."

J.Crew Presents a Bright Fall 2011 Collection In Face of Lagging Women's Sales

    >> Change is afoot at J.Crew — evident at the newly private brand's Fall 2011 presentation yesterday.

    >> Change is afoot at J.Crew — evident at the newly private brand's Fall 2011 presentation yesterday. J.Crew chairman and CEO Mickey Drexler, who just signed a new employment contract (running through March 7, 2015), chatted and took in the crowd, while the press-friendly Jenna Lyons (now president and executive creative director of the brand) deferred interviews about the collection to head women's designer Marissa Webb. That's not to say that Lyons's influence wasn't present — a few of the models sported Cutler and Gross eyeglasses that mirrored Lyons's own signature thick-framed black specs.

But after last week's reports that J.Crew's women's business declined last year, all eyes were on what Webb and J.Crew would do to amp sales back up. The tailored Fall 2011 collection, which featured hunter green patent loafers and a tomato red dress, was inspired by an office screening of Bonnie and Clyde and The Great Gatsby, Webb explained: "You have the whimsy and playfulness of Daisy [from Gatsby] and the structured menswear of Bonnie. The mixing of the two elements is the perfect J.Crew fantasy."

J.Crew Goes Private for $3 Billion; Mickey Drexler to Remain CEO

    >> J.Crew is going private.

    >> J.Crew is going private. Private equity firms Leonard Green & Partners and TPG Capital — a former owner of the retailer — bought outstanding shares today for $43.50 apiece — a nearly 16 percent premium to J. Crew’s Monday closing price — tallying to an approximately $3 billion deal overall.

J.Crew, the retailer's chairman and CEO Mickey Drexler, and the firms have been in talks for several weeks, and Drexler is expected to continue in his roles. As of Sept. 17, Drexler remained one of the company's biggest shareholders, with a roughly 5.4 percent stake.

“I am pleased to announce this agreement as it delivers significant value to our shareholders,” Mr. Drexler said in a statement. ” As I have always said, we are in this for the long term and we do what we do day in and day out so we can deliver the best possible products to our customers.”

    J. Crew is holding a go-shop period through Jan. 15, to give prospective rival bidders the chance to evaluate the company’s holiday sales performance. We've heard from a source inside the company that women's sales have been stagnant as of late, and Fashionista has heard the same — although apparently men's sales have continued to rise for the retailer.
