Alexander Wang Spring 2013

Alexander Wang always has something up his sleeve, and Spring '13 didn't disappoint.

Alexander Wang always has something up his sleeve, and Spring '13 didn't disappoint. Looking beyond the horizon, the boy wonder produced a sporty, futuristic lineup of skin-baring cutout dresses, metallic bombers, and a lot of leather. Oversize, structured cuts dominated Wang's athletic mood — we couldn't take our eyes off the white rubberized twill parka — lending an intrinsically new-age aesthetic, further exemplified through laser-cut, fish line, rubber, and mesh details. Also to note were the sexy, liquid metallic knits paired up with croc-embossed skirts. Wang's seasonal zinger? As the lights went off at the end of the show, models stood statuesque as Wang's collection came to glow-in-the-dark life. Suffice to say, the crowd went wild. Welcome to the future, people.

  • Trends: Leather, crop tops, sheer details, cutouts, futuristic fabrics.
  • Colors: Black, white, metallic silver, tan.
  • Key Piece: The white rubberized twill parka and sheer paneled dress looked amazing.

Alexander Wang Spring 2013

It's rare, during New York Fashion Week, to attend a show that has audiences literally cheering aloud.
Alexander Wang Spring 2013 | Runway

It's rare, during New York Fashion Week, to attend a show that has audiences literally cheering aloud. At Alexander Wang's Spring 2013 show today, that's precisely what happened.

The outing started out standard enough, with militaristic and sports-inspired silhouettes in black and white leather and rubberized twill. The new story for Wang this season, though, was cutouts; they came in stripes and floating geometric patterns on boxy jackets and body-hugging shifts, and as hourglass-enhancing openings on the sides of cable-knit tops and sweater dresses. All in all, it made for an intriguing enough lineup.

Then it happened. At the end of the show, after all the models — including Liberty Ross, who was making a cameo catwalk appearance — had walked, several models marched out to take their places along the runway. The lights dimmed, then a black light came on, and then utter darkness. And there, in the cavernous space of Pier 94, the models' all-white outfits began to glow in the dark — much to the audience's raucous delight.

Boy. by Band of Outsiders Spring 2013

Inspired by the Japanese film Battle Royale, Scott Sternberg's Boy.

Inspired by the Japanese film Battle Royale, Scott Sternberg's Boy. by Band of Outsiders Spring '13 lineup was decidedly militant — models even bared war paint on their faces — with a beachy twist. There were a lot of smart, army-green, epaulet-embellished blazers paired with macramé tops, breezy maxi skirts and loose, ankle-tie trousers emoting an effortlessly cool look. However, it was Sternberg's use of Shibori prints that really captivated the audience. Dipping in blue hues, the designer utilized the Japanese dyeing technique to create a refreshing array of tailored blazers, shorts, and sharp wrap skirts, some of which took on a cool, denim-like effect. While others, like an indigo-blue Shibori-printed drawstring-shorts-and-top combo, practically glistened as it made its way down the runway.

  • Trends: Dip-dye, military, macramé, loose trousers.
  • Colors: Army green, blue, white, navy, indigo.
  • Key Piece: The Shibori-printed drawstring-shorts-and-top combo.
  • Accessories: Lace-up gladiator shoes made in collaboration with Manolo Blahnik, drop earrings, wrap bracelets.
  • Who Should Wear It: It's all about effortless, tailored cool. We can see Kirsten Dunst and Kate Bosworth sporting some of those Shibori prints on the streets.

Edun Spring 2013

More than any other Spring 2013 collection, we can look to Edun for a strong conscientious presentation of contrasted viewpoints.

More than any other Spring 2013 collection, we can look to Edun for a strong conscientious presentation of contrasted viewpoints. What we mean by this is that there is no other brand that consistently — and, as a rule of thumb — reinvents the way in which we can wear globally-sourced, nature-inspired fabrics and textures in the context of what's fashion-forward and beautiful. Today, we witnessed the latest reimagination: a cool mix of army-green utilitarian pieces (zippered vests, cargo trumpet-hem skirts, and camo-printed trousers) against sexier bralette tops, draped chiffon tops, and patchwork corseted dresses. Among our favorites spotted on the runway? A double-zippered olive-hued shiftdress (that's just begging to be worn with a pair of sexy reptilian-print ankle-strap sandals) topped our list. It's official: we deem this lineup Spring's sultry safari adventure. Catch up on our show breakdown below — then, click through to see Edun's latest offerings in full.

  • Trends: Military-inspired cuts, subtle embellishments (but silver sequins are in), wide silky trousers, and cutouts galore.
  • Colors: Navy blue, olive green, brown, white, black, midnight gray, silver, and hints of purple.
  • Key Piece: We're obsessing over the deep-V plunge romper — complete with sexy bralette peeping through — and slouchy blazer to finish, which acted as a slightly more tailored touch.
  • Accessories: Reptilian-printed sandals that popped up in simple ankle-strap incarnations and sexier gladiator cage versions, arm wraplets, and grommet-infused belts.
  • Who Should Wear It: We could picture front-row attendee Alicia Keys in one of the more skin-baring mesh tops or stylers like Moda Operandi's Taylor Tomasi Hill in one of the slick army-green cargo jackets.

Edun Spring 2013

"What girl doesn't love the shiny bits?"
Edun Spring 2013 | Runway

"What girl doesn't love the shiny bits?" asked Edun founder Ali Hewson backstage before her brand's Spring 2013 show, referring to the judicious sprinkling of sequins designer Sharon Wauchob applied to her utilitarian-minded collection.

The sustainable brand's newest offering ranged from olive drab jackets with plenty of functional zippered pockets to flirty printed dresses, camouflage trousers, and bralette tops that were simultaneously sweet and tough. Straddling the dichotomy between those two feelings requires a lot of stretching, but Wauchob accomplished it by pairing girlie flourishes (a bow here, a ruffle there) with hardworking elements like elastic straps and open crochet work that looks like netting. Hewson's beloved sequins married the hard and soft metaphors perfectly: they were applied to the seams on a jacket and as pocket panels on a strapless black dress.

Lady Gaga's Perfume Campaign Is Typically Risqué

Little by little, Lady Gaga is revealing more about her new perfume — and revealing more of herself in the process.

Little by little, Lady Gaga is revealing more about her new perfume — and revealing more of herself in the process. This afternoon, Gaga tweeted a preview of the campaign for Fame:

i won't lie I'm a bit nervous. its been a while since i've shared some work with you. But i'm so proud of Steven+I, we really did not sleep!

Shot by Steven Klein, who directed Gaga's "Alejandro" video in 2010, the ad leans darker than many fragrance campaigns. It's a fitting move for Fame, whose juice is black in the bottle but turns clear when sprayed. And for Lady Gaga, it's just a teaser for the bigger campaign to come.

Best Gowns From Couture Fashion Week

In a whirlwind week of Haute Couture, it's not an easy task to pick the crème de la crème (after all, isn't it all the best of the best?), but we did. After taking in the confections from Couture Week's heavy-hitters, we made it a mission to pick the most gorgeous gowns — the ones that totally took our breath away. From the lacy gowns at Valentino, finished in fairy-tale-like capes, to the all-out siren strapless numbers at Versace, there's nothing short of stunning in this curated collection of our favorites. Giambattista Valli said it with flowers, Givenchy with regal-inspired luxe — in any case, these truly are the most glamorous of them all.

Rihanna Shops in a Racy Top as Her Nude Billboard Goes on Display

Rihanna caused a stir in NYC yesterday while shopping.

Rihanna caused a stir in NYC yesterday while shopping. She stepped out in a see-through bandeau top, which was paired with a matching skirt. Click through to see more photos of Rihanna in the Big Apple, but please note some photos are NSFW. Her racy top got a few looks from fans on the street, and she's also turning heads thanks to a new billboard in Times Square. Rihanna posed nude for an ad promoting her fragrance Rebelle.

She's been showing lots of skin lately, and some friends are concerned — a current report suggests her pals want Rihanna to slow down the breakneck schedule that's seen her hospitalized twice in recent months for exhaustion. Rihanna laughed off rehab stories, though, firing back with an Instagram photo. Rihanna's clearly a major star, and is among the hottest celebs in this year's PopSugar 100! Do You Find These Controversial Ads Shocking?

The UK's Advertising Standards Agency has just released its annual report with the most complained-about ads of all time, which include this British Safety Council condom ad from 1995 that offended Roman Catholics and Sophie Dahl's infamous nude Yves Saint Laurent Opium perfume ad from 2000.

But the No. 1 complained-about ad may surprise you — it is a KFC ad from 2005 that centers around employees talking with their mouths full. Those Brits, always watching their manners!

For us, the most shocking ads are those that make us cringe with their sexist, homophobic, or just plain overly sexualized messages. It's sad to see that we haven't evolved much from the disturbingly sexist ads of the '60s. But take a look at some of these modern-day TV and print ads that have sparked controversy and weigh in on if you find them shocking or not. (Warning: slightly NSFW images ahead.)
