Gwyneth and Madonna Put Up a United Front to Honor DvF With Posh

Victoria Beckham was in a black version of the Giles Deacon dress she wore for Fashion's Night Out to celebrate the launch of Diane von Furstenberg's boutique at Claridge's in London last night. Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow arrived fashionably late and were inseparable throughout the evening, which certainly combats rumors that the longtime friends are on the outs. Gwyneth was in high spirits, perhaps toasting to her new role opposite Bradley Cooper and Bruce Willis in an upcoming M. Night Shyamalan project. Posh arrived in England at the beginning of the month and has been hitting the town with her three sons while David's in South Africa for the World Cup. The Beckham clan is rumored to be planning a post-tournament reunion with a vacation in St. Tropez.

Marc Jacobs Sings Backup for Donna Summer, Talks Hair Transplant at Louis Vuitton Store Opening

>> Marc Jacobs has taken the stage for many a reason in the past — usually it involves accepting an award — but last night, it was to sing backup to Donna Summer at the opening of Louis Vuitton's new store on Bond Street in London.

>> Marc Jacobs has taken the stage for many a reason in the past — usually it involves accepting an award — but last night, it was to sing backup to Donna Summer at the opening of Louis Vuitton's new store on Bond Street in London. “It was fun — but I think I’ll stick to my day job,” he quipped.

Jacobs celebrated with the likes of Stella Tennant, Bernard Arnault, Carine Roitfeld, and Natalia Vodianova, and opened up about his recent hair transplant, which had him avoiding press and cameras at the Costume Institute Gala earlier this month. "I was starting to thin on top. I can’t dye it for a while, so this is my natural colour.”

He also hinted that the Louis Vuitton logo that he has helped make so ubiquitous almost got squelched way back when he first started at the brand: "When I arrived at Louis Vuitton 12 years ago, and I was figuring out how to create a new tier of Vuitton for a different customer, I thought it would be clever to hide that monogram, which was very stupid of me. That logo is part of what makes the Vuitton so desirable. It allows people to become members of an aspirational club."

Logos are to be expected, but not Louis Vuitton couture — Jacobs says he has no desire to launch such a collection. “Some of what we already do at ready-to-wear is pretty much at couture level, anyway."

Marc Jacobs Tore His Shoulder and Needs Surgery, Can't Work Out

>> For a recent chat with the Financial Times's Vanessa Friedman, Marc Jacobs wore a white button-down shirt with jeans instead of his usual kilt; is his addiction to the skort waning, perhaps courtesy of his fiance Lorenzo Martone's dislike of the look?

>> For a recent chat with the Financial Times's Vanessa Friedman, Marc Jacobs wore a white button-down shirt with jeans instead of his usual kilt; is his addiction to the skort waning, perhaps courtesy of his fiance Lorenzo Martone's dislike of the look? “I just didn’t feel like wearing it,” Jacobs explained.

As for his compulsive gym habit, Jacobs says he hasn’t “been able to work out at all,” due to a torn rotator cuff on his shoulder; he's having surgery in a few weeks. His predilection for purchasing art, too, has been curbed: “Actually, I haven’t bought anything for a long time. The other day I bought a little 1962 Ellsworth Kelly at the Christie’s auction, but that’s it. It was a funny thing for me to buy, too. It’s just a white square with a yellow curve. Usually I like more figurative work – this is the sort of thing I’d look at and admire but not want to buy. But I just like it . . . it makes me happy.”

Gisele Bundchen Tops Forbes's Top-Earning Model List for Sixth Consecutive Year in 2010

>> Forbes just released their yearly list of top-earning models: Gisele Bundchen holds the top spot — which she's had for at least six years now — with $25 million in estimated earnings from June 2009 to June 2010.In fact, there hasn't been a lot of movement in the list in the past year — for 2010, the top ten is exactly the same for the second year in a row, with the exception of Natalia Vodianova moving up from seventh position to tie Alessandra Ambrosio in sixth place.  Same goes for earnings — not a lot of change: Bundchen, Heidi Klum, Doutzen Kroes, Natalia Vodianova, Daria Werbowy are all estimated to be pulling in the same amount this year as they did last year, with the rest of the top ten's earnings only going up or down by half a million.

Would You Rather See Models or Celebs in Fashion Ads?

Just when we thought the celebrity cover girl trend was here to stay, recent reports suggest designers are going back to their roots choosing models over the latest Hollywood "it" girl.

Just when we thought the celebrity cover girl trend was here to stay, recent reports suggest designers are going back to their roots choosing models over the latest Hollywood "it" girl. "Actresses are fantastic, but they’re not models and it’s not easy," Stefano Pilati said. "[Actresses] have an attitude, but will never be the fashion attitude. To me, fashion photography is with a model; otherwise, it’s a portrait." That said, most European designers chose to feature top models such as Daria Werbowy, Raquel Zimmermann, and Natalia Vodianova in their upcoming Fall '10 campaigns. "What I need to focus on is an attitude, and this comes from a great, experienced model," Pilati said. "[Models] can feel the clothes and make them relevant from a fashion point of view." However, American brands are said to prefer celebrities over models and are predicted to continue the trend into the coming season. This one's a toughie; would you rather see models or celebs in fashion ads?

Meisel also shot the Lanvin campaign this week in New York, with Alber Elbaz overseeing another trio: Anja Rubik, Magdelena Frackowiak and Mariacarla Boscono.

Givenchy, too, is rumored to be going with a trio of female models — Ming Xi, Joan Smalls, and Mariacarla Boscono — joined by a few male models in front of Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott's lens. But the trio trend breaks there — word going around is that Meisel captured 12 girls for Balenciaga, including Finnish newcomer Kirsi Pyrhonen, and Roberto Cavalli is going solo with Gisele Bundchen shot by Mert and Marcus.

How Young Is Too Young to Model?

Last night, Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, and Natalia Vodianova attended Harvard's 13th annual Public Forum to participate in a forum titled “Health Matters: Weight and Wellness in the World of Fashion” to discuss the fashion industry's issues with anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders.

During the forum, Kors declared he will not hire any models under the age of 16. “I think super-young girls used to be the exception,’’ Kors said. “There’s always been a Twiggy, or a model who is very young. But they were few and far between. Now, they’re completely common. That’s something I see as a huge problem.’’

Natalia Vodianova also spoke up about the pressure of losing weight after giving birth: “After I gave birth I lost a lot of weight, and under the pressure of the industry I realized much later I had an eating disorder. I went to therapy, I’m probably breaking my own boundaries but I recognized I had a problem.”

Michael continued, stating, “The age of models really has to become a priority. We need to give these girls a chance to grow up.” I think 16 is even too young; I think 18 is a more stable age to be subject to modeling pressures. What do you think?
