Nicholas K Spring 2013

Staying true to their nomadic cool styling cues, sibling designer duo Christopher and Nicholas Kunz delivered another helping of perfectly draped jackets, silky jumpsuits, and tasseled dresses for the ultimate downtown utilitarian.

Staying true to their nomadic cool styling cues, sibling designer duo Christopher and Nicholas Kunz delivered another helping of perfectly draped jackets, silky jumpsuits, and tasseled dresses for the ultimate downtown utilitarian. Layering played a big role in their Spring '13 story; cropped trousers were paired with loose draped knits and cropped trench coats, while whisper thin knit sweaters were layered over silk print tunics, and wrap-effect trousers — and leave it to Kunz kids to make stocking caps cool again. For the minimalist personalities, the designer delivered more streamlined looks ranging from cable-knit sweater dresses to silky jumpsuits. Get the full rundown, then check out the complete collection in the slideshow.

  • Trends: Tassel embellishments, wrap pants, utilitarian details, jumpsuits.
  • Colors: Sand, rust, blue, gray, light green, black, beige.
  • Key Piece: The tailored wrap trousers and silky jumpsuits.
  • Accessories: Ankle-wrap wedge sandals, oversized sunglasses frames, stocking caps, hooded scarves.
  • Who Should Wear It: Nomads with an edgy twist like Rihanna, who we can already picture wearing one of those cool hooded tops.

Nicholas K Fall 2012

Nancy Sinatra's epic "Bang Bang," set the mood for Nicholas Kunz's Fall Nicholas K collection.
Nicholas K Runway Fall 2012

Nancy Sinatra's epic "Bang Bang," set the mood for Nicholas Kunz's Fall Nicholas K collection. Inspired by the Taos artists in the '20s and '30s, Kunz imagined a line bursting with Western influence — we loved all of the cool Stetson-inspired hats — and a dash of deco. Fringe was heavily prevalent, making its way onto geometric leather jackets, sheer crochet dresses, and for a vintage touch, metallic fringed flapper dresses. For eveningwear, Kunz showed off her signature draping technique on a variety of gorgeous sexy bias-cut dresses and fluid tops. The outerwear category also shined: parka jackets came complete with inner straps (so the coat can hang just off the shoulders), structured leather jackets highlighted by luxe fur collars, and the closing look featured an undeniably slick black asymmetric leather and canvas zippered coat. More details below.

  • Trends: Western influence, fringe, parka jackets, crochet detailing.
  • Colors: Desert sand, gray, black, army green, sienna.
  • Key Piece: We loved the simple yet sexy sheer asymmetric and draped dresses; outerwear showed amazing structural pieces.
  • Accessories: Wedge platform boots, knee-high boots, leather harness vests, Western-inspired hats, turtle shell necklaces.
  • Who Would Wear It: Girls who like the utilitarian look with slight, modern edge.

Rachel Comey Fall 2012

Rachel Comey showed us her sophisticated side for Fall '12, streamlining her usual quirk factor with a modern, refreshing twist. "Normally for Fall we dive into print and pattern and color," said Comey. "This time, I pulled all of that out and cleared the air." With that in mind, the designer showcased laser-cut cotton dresses and wool felt tops, digital-print knee-length skirts, pretty prints, and shiny boxy leather tops. Color pops included an oversized bright orange coat and dress and even a heart-print dress doused in hot pink. Comey's shoes, a cult favorite amongst many, included quirky-cool black-and-white cap-toe loafers, flatforms, and chunky ankle boots. To finish, Comey closed out the show with an array of cocktail-appropriate black dresses, ranging from a simple, slinky halter-neck LBD to a shimmering full-skirted version. More details on the collection below.

  • Trends: Laser-cut tops, full-skirt dresses, metallic, digital and watercolor prints.
  • Colors: Black, gray, hot pink, bright orange.
  • Key Piece: Rachel's laser-cut tops and dresses exuded a light structural quality we can't wait to try on come Fall '12.
  • Accessories: Black-and-white cap-toe loafers, flatform boots, clear plastic skinny belts, sheer metallic socks.
  • Who Would Wear It: Girls who crave quirky yet sophisticated pieces like Kate Bosworth, Whitney Port, and Leighton Meester.

Nicholas K: Spring 2012

It was all about the modern gypsy at Nicholas K's Spring 2012 show today as designer siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz sent models down the runway decked out in silken layers complete with long head scarves, nomadic leather platform sandals, and side cornrow braids. For daywear the duo showcased sheer dresses layered underneath glazed cropped ponchos, while nightwear focused on long silk gowns, gracefully flowing down the runway. With a color palette of warm, vibrant earth tones, the collection took on a functional futuristic aesthetic. We especially loved the perfectly layered look, see middle image, comprised of light tan trench and draped skirt paired with a knotted cream top. More highlights from the show below.

  • Trends: Cropped capes, asymmetric hemlines, glazed/metallic jackets, sheer dresses, urban gypsy.
  • Colors: White, tan, copper, green, blue, black, gray.
  • Key Look: A short sheer copper print dress paired with a matching glazed poncho jacket.

More is more for Nicholas Kunz this season.

More is more for Nicholas Kunz this season. Oversized tee shirts, gauzy scarves, drop crotch trousers, vegetable-dyed leather jackets, and grunge-influenced plaid dresses give her urban warriors a disheveled, nomadic look for fall. Abstract prints and sun-bleached solids are paired with coal-rimmed eyes and cuffed ankle boots for her, while he's decked in fur-trimmed hoodies, boxing robes, and combat boots. Look Book Love: Nicholas K, Fall '09

I already own three green parka-like jackets, but there's no resisting this shorter, sherpa-lined version from Nicholas K.

I already own three green parka-like jackets, but there's no resisting this shorter, sherpa-lined version from Nicholas K. However, that's not the only piece worth swooning over from the Fall collection. Step into Nicholas K's world of cozy knits, structured coats, rad flannels, silky frocks, and tailored pants. These pieces are ideal for the indie city girl looking to add a little extra flavor to her repertoire. There's something about the meticulously cut jackets and grungy vibe that just exudes a carefree attitude. I can already picture Ashley or Mary-Kate Olsen rocking some of these goodies — what about you?

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Still Necessary, Just with Less of Everything

    >> Designers may be pulling their belt tighter this Fashion Week, but hardly any are pulling out of the rat race altogether — the attention is too valuable.

    >> Designers may be pulling their belt tighter this Fashion Week, but hardly any are pulling out of the rat race altogether — the attention is too valuable. "You kill a thousand birds with one stone, because you get that many people there in an hour and you're getting one message across to them," says Scott Sternberg of Boy and Band of Outsiders. "They're writers and photographers and culturally indulgent people with loud mouths."

Instead, designers are saving by hosting presentations instead of runway shows (Monique Lhuillier, Temperley London, and Carmen Marc Valvo), inviting fewer guests (Marc Jacobs and DKNY, who's slicing her usual 1,000 down to 400), sending email invites instead of by mail (nearly everyone), or showing fewer looks to save on fabric and sample-making costs.
