Expect a Spring 2010 Season Full of "Safe" Ad Campaigns

>> Fashion houses tended toward casting celebrities or established, "pretty" faces for their Fall 2009 campaigns, and it sounds like despite the fact that the Spring 2010 runways were flooded with new faces — because so many established models were sitting it out — Spring 2010 campaign season will bring more of the same.

"My aim has always been to push at the boundaries of what is and isn't beautiful. Instead of our perception of beauty opening up, it's becoming more narrow all the time. To make money, the industry is increasingly catering to the lowest common denominator and, as far as the people who run the big companies are concerned, anything even slightly out of the ordinary frightens people. But anyone with a brain knows that it is the quirkiness and imperfection in a person that attracts other people. That is completely obvious to human beings; it's just when it gets to a corporate level that it all falls apart."

So what of those new faces? »

Photographer Pits Naomi Campbell Against Kate Moss

Naomi and Kate are friends, so I wonder how they'll feel about this tidbit everyone is talking about today.

Naomi and Kate are friends, so I wonder how they'll feel about this tidbit everyone is talking about today. Photographer Nick Knight just spoke with The Times UK about his preference between the two Supers: "Over the years I've felt I want to work with Naomi rather than Kate. I like the fact that Naomi sits less comfortably in society than Kate does," he said. "Talk to Naomi and she is f***ing incandescent with rage that she's not on the cover of Vogue. She puts it down to racism, and she's furious."

Knight's adoration of Campbell shows in his upcoming exhibition, SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution, where there are huge photographs he took of the Super toting machine-guns, as well as 22-feet sculptures of Campbell.

Alexander McQueen's Virtual Runway Show

Alexander McQueen is taking the virtual world by storm.

Alexander McQueen is taking the virtual world by storm. In addition to tweeting funny messages like "I'm at the dentist . . . about to go under the knife!," the designer has announced, via Twitter, that he will be streaming his Spring collection Oct. 6 runway show at Paris Fashion Week live at AlexanderMcQueen.com and AlexanderMcqueenLive.showstudio.com — no tickets necessary. McQueen is collaborating with Nick Knight’s SHOWStudio.com. Knight divulged robot cameras will be at work on and off the catwalk, and in the audience, while, at the back of the runway, an LED screen will beam out the roving cameras’ images. So cool.

Why? Why ask why? McQueen explains, “Every year, buyers and the press come to see the spectacle of my show. But I want to generate something else, something for a wider audience — for people in Australia, Asia, and Middle America who don’t have a seat at the show. Really, what I’m aiming for is world domination!” McQueen devotees: set your calendar!

Gisele Bundchen Guarantees Sales, Will Lie on Hospital Floors Naked for Work

>> Waves were made last month when Gisele Bundchen replaced Kate Moss in her longstanding run atop the Models.com Top Icons list.  But Gisele can sell, according to The Independent — she commands up to $20 million for a single contract, and when she was signed by C&A in Brazil for a series of advertisements, sales increased 30 percent.Photographer Alice Hawkins, who once shot Gisele at her Manhattan penthouse triplex, says the model is "very clever about making money — it’s an interest of hers.”  And she keeps it in the family — she now employs four of her five siblings, as her manager, her lawyer, her accountant, and her web developer.

Photographer Alice Hawkins, who once shot Gisele at her Manhattan penthouse triplex, says the model is "very clever about making money — it’s an interest of hers.”  And she keeps it in the family — she now employs four of her five siblings, as her manager, her lawyer, her accountant, and her web developer.

Her business savvy caught the attention of economist Fred Fuld, who developed the Gisele Bundchen Stock Index, which charts the performance of companies who have employed Gisele like LVMH, Volkswagen, and News Corp, who financed the The Devil Wears Prada, in which Bündchen had a cameo role: “She could have become the spokeswoman for General Motors or Ford, both of which have received government bailouts and may yet declare themselves bankrupt. But Volkswagen is in much better shape, and is even considering buying Porsche."

Fuld found, reports The Independent:

By the end of 2007, Gisele’s index was up 29 per cent in comparison to the Dow’s 6.5 per cent. And when she terminated the Victoria’s Secret contract, parent company Limited Brand’s share price fell 31.5 per cent. And, although the Gisele Index is down 15.7 per cent between 2007 and 2009, it still managed to outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which was down over 30 per cent during the same period.

Not only does Gisele sell well and choose her investments and opportunities wisely, she also gives high client satisfaction, according to Nick Knight: “Where some models take the money [for commercial, rather than editorial, work] and are then embarrassed to enter into it, when she’s decided to do the campaign, she’s 100 per cent behind it.  If they ask her to say ‘This is the best lipstick in the world’, she does. It’s slightly tongue in cheek, but you get swept along with her enthusiasm.”

Girls on Film: Let There Be Light, V Magazine

January is arguably one of the toughest months of the year. The holidays have fizzled, wallets are depleted, and attitudes are shaky. When I viewed this editorial in Visonaire's Spring Preview 2009, it was a momentary escape. I love when editorials mix media and Nick Knight is indeed a mixmaster. Lily Donaldson is lovely as an ethereal, artsy creator who floats by on painted pieces of cardboard. Need a pick-me-up? Slide on . . .
