DKNY and Opening Ceremony Bring Back the '90s in a Very Real Way

The most recent case of '90s nostalgia comes courtesy of today's official launch of the DKNY and Opening Ceremony limited-time capsule collection.

The most recent case of '90s nostalgia comes courtesy of today's official launch of the DKNY and Opening Ceremony limited-time capsule collection. The retailer is reissuing 15 of DKNY's iconic early '90s pieces, including a t-shirt printed with the NYC skyline from '92 and a hooded logo dress and a colorblocked jumpsuit from '94. "DKNY was a pioneer of streetwear fashion in the Nineties," said Opening Ceremony cofounder Carol Lim. "We have been longtime fans of the brand and were very excited to bring back select, quintessential styles that feel fresh even today." And Lim isn't the only one feeling the pull of the '90s. We've seen a resurgence in both fashion and culture where this era is concerned, not least of which is the overarching grunge-rock plaids seen in both Phillip Lim and Dries Van Noten's Spring shows, Alexander Wang's Bon Qui Qui stunt, and the comeback of MTV's House of Style. It may be more than a decade past, but from where we're sitting, the '90s never really left us. The throwback staples are now available in Opening Ceremony boutiques and on the website, with prices ranging from $145 to $665. Click on to see the complete line, plus some of the better '90s style moments to make a recent reappearance.

A Look at the '90s Spirit of DKNY That Opening Ceremony Is Bringing Back

If there was even a shadow of a doubt about the return of the '90s, Opening Ceremony's new project with DKNY should obliterate it.

If there was even a shadow of a doubt about the return of the '90s, Opening Ceremony's new project with DKNY should obliterate it.

The retailer will reissue 15 of DKNY's archival pieces from the early '90s, including t-shirts screen printed with the New York skyline and the DKNY logo, a colorblocked jumpsuit, and a cropped puffer jacket. The garments will be available in Opening Ceremony boutiques and on its website this Friday, priced between $145 and $665.

"DKNY was a pioneer of streetwear fashion in the Nineties," said Opening Ceremony's Carol Lim in an interview with WWD. "We have been longtime fans of the brand and were very excited to bring back select, quintessential styles that feel fresh even today."

That freshness may owe a debt to the overall comeback of the '90s in fashion and in culture. MTV resurrected its groundbreaking TV show House of Style in August, and the cult brand X-Girl announced that it would return to the US just this week. When you factor in the resurgence of grunge on the Spring 2013 runways — articulated in the mix of plaid and florals shown by designers like Phillip Lim and Dries Van Noten — there's no doubting that the dream of the '90s really is alive.

That said, part of the target demographic for this collaboration — including the star of its campaign, Cara Delevingne, born in 1992 — probably weren't wearing adult-size clothing when these garments were first introduced. For those readers who don't remember the spirit of Karan's '90s designs — or who just want to take a trip down memory lane — a look back at some of DKNY's ad campaigns from the '90s, here in the gallery.

Opening Ceremony Pre-Fall 2013

If what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, what happens when you're on the way there?
Opening Ceremony Pre-Fall 2013 | Pictures

If what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, what happens when you're on the way there? That's the story Carol Lim and Humberto Leon were trying to tell with their Opening Ceremony Pre-Fall 2013 collection.

At the outset, many of the looks in this visual accounting of a young woman's first trip to Sin City were crisp works in black and white, like a pair of belted wide-leg trousers or a black sequined dress with sheer white sleeves that zipped up the front. The visual interest picked up as the collection progressed with the addition of a dizzying pattern of thin, undulating black and white stripes and the first accent colors: pale blue, purple, and red. Eventually these were joined by a deep blue that was used in sweaters and a romper covered in paillettes, and a burgundy jacquard used for a few of the final pieces. That fabric looked especially great as the sleeves and collar of a black raglan-sleeve jacket with a plain black bodice.

Yoko Ono's Wedding Gift to John Lennon Inspires Peculiar Fashion

Either Yoko Ono is playing a joke on all of us, or her Opening Ceremony collection is meant to be an art exhibit rather than actual wearable clothing.

Either Yoko Ono is playing a joke on all of us, or her Opening Ceremony collection is meant to be an art exhibit rather than actual wearable clothing. The just-released Yoko Ono Fashions For Men 1969-2012 includes a $250 "lightbulb bra" and a generous helping of hand-on-crotch pants. Perhaps John Lennon superfans will have some interest. According to Opening Ceremony, the line is based on a book of hand-drawn illustrations Yoko presented to John for their wedding. See some of the most outrageous pieces from Yoko's collection now.
