Loulou de la Falaise

>> Loulou de Falaise, who collaborated with and inspired Yves Saint Laurent for over three decades, died Saturday at her country house in Boury-en-Vexin, northwest of Paris. She was 63.

The Pierre Berge-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation announced her passing, citing an unspecified "long illness" as the cause of death. WWD's sources report that de la Falaise was diagnosed with cancer last June but wanted to keep her health a private matter. She is survived by her husband, Thadee Klossowski — who she married in 1977 in a Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche turban and harem pants — and their daughter, Anna.

De la Falaise met Saint Laurent at 1968, when she was 21, at a tea party given by the designer Fernando Sanchez. She began working for YSL in 1972, designing jewelry and hats for his couture and ready-to-wear collections and producing up to 2,000 pieces of jewelry a year until 2002, when he retired. Later, she collaborated with Oscar de la Renta on his jewelry collections. Her final designs — a line of costume jewelry she created over the Summer — go on sale next month in the shop at the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech.

Andre Leon Talley Gets a Museum Gallery of His Own, Wants It Perfumed

>> Savannah College of Art and Design, of which Andre Leon Talley is a board member, will as of Saturday have an Andre Leon Talley Gallery in its new museum of art.

Talley has been helping the museum build a costume collection out of his own archives and donations from friends. The first exhibit will include the black gown Penelope Cruz wore to the most recent Costume Institute Gala, sent by Oscar de la Renta; a black sequined wrap dress, sent by Diane von Furstenberg; a Fall 2007 Prada coat trimmed with plastic fringe and feathers; a column dress trimmed with natural string from Tom Ford's debut womenswear show; and the blue satin Manolo Blahniks featured in the Sex and the City movie.

"The only thing I haven't thrust upon them yet is that I want fragrance wafting through the ventilation system," Talley said. "Either Oscar de la Renta's Live in Love, or Diane von Furstenberg's Diane."

It sounds like he might get his wish. Paula Wallace, president and a founder of the college, said of the perfume idea: "He has not mentioned that to me, but if Andre wants it, he gets it. The multisensory concept is so important. We learn, we feel, we think, we smell. Actually, I think it's a grand idea."

For the Emmys, Claire Danes wore a classic, blue-sequined Oscar de la Renta gown with geometric figures sewn into the sequins. The shape is simple, but the patterning is like something out of Picasso's blue period. Claire gave the ensemble — worn with Barbara Bui heels — more edge with smoked-out eyeliner and coral lipstick. Oscar de la Renta: Spring 2012 RTW

A sense of youthful fun pervaded Oscar de la Renta's Spring 2012 runway show. It was partly due to Justin Timberlake in the front row, the runway models' crimped hair, dewy skin, and sock-with-sandal styling, but it was mostly the clothes. Not driven so much by a theme as by a girl, a younger girl than de la Renta's traditional customer, who will be a little more playful with her choice of clothes. A feather-trimmed sequined shift, acid-green harem pants with a feathered crop top, and gathered taffeta ball-skirt gowns layered with lace cropped shirts were not for the faint of fashion heart; more staid were a series of easy chiffon shift dresses and wide-leg trousers and pussy-bow blouses. It's as if the almost-80-year-old designer were having a good long wink at the crowd, reminding us that you're never too old to have fun. It's a treat that his version of fun is so darn beautiful, too.

  • Trends: bold color, volume, asymmetry, crochet, feathers.
  • Colors: cobalt blue, white, pale pink, champagne, yellow floral print.
  • Key Piece:The taffeta ball gowns layered with cropped tops in lace and crochet.
  • Accessories: Strappy stilettos and open-toe booties in black and white from Manolo Blahnik.
  • Who Would Wear It: Certainly not Justin Timberlake, but we can't wait to see young starlets like Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, Rachel Bilson, and Olivia Palermo work de la Renta's jazzy, evening options on the red carpet.

Oh, Pretty: Oscar de la Renta Releases a Makeup Palette With Fall's Hottest Colors

Oscar de la Renta has been a fragrance stalwart for years now, but now he's got at least one fashionable cosmetic to his name as well.

Oscar de la Renta has been a fragrance stalwart for years now, but now he's got at least one fashionable cosmetic to his name as well. His new limited-edition makeup palette, called the "Ready to Wear" Kaleidoscope, was created in collaboration with Le Métier de Beauté, but the colors are all Oscar. In fact, the shades are taken from de la Renta's Fall 2011 collection, and there's everything from blush to rouge and eyeshadow.

"I have chosen shades that are indispensable," de la Renta told WWD. "Like a good red lip and a neutral highlighter for the cheekbones. Color has always been an extremely important part of who I am as a designer. It is wonderful to work with cosmetics because they are such an important part of a woman's sense of femininity."

At $150, the palette is certainly pricey, and it's also only available tonight during Fashion's Night Out at Bergdorf Goodman or the designer's boutique. A portion of the proceeds is going to the NYC AIDS Fund, so it's not just a selfish extravagance, either.

Of course, the majority of us aren't in New York, so for us this palette is more a preview of what could be in the pipe. So many designers already have a makeup collection, but if de la Renta came out with one, would you be in line to buy it?
