First we gave you 15 perfect white shirts. We continue our Back to Basics tour with what sits on top of the shirt — a coat. Trench coat, to be exact. This style of outerwear has been around since World War I. It was first made for British and French soldiers. Of course, we can't mention trench coats without mentioning Burberry, one of its inventors. The trench has come a long way since, and has taken a life of its own. Cropped, long, embellished, colored, printed, metallic — the possibilities are endless. Proceed to discover my favorites.
If you want to get a jump-start on Spring, consider swooping up the jacket of the season: the anorak. Like, now. I would suggest either khaki, olive, or the classic black anorak. Utilitarian at its best. Kylie Minogue layered hers with all-black and liquid leggings. She looks urban, yet approachable. Can you say perfect transition piece?
If you don't yet have a good Winter coat, check out Forever 21's outerwear sale. Ponchos, trenches, denim jackets, and more are up to 50 percent off. This Faux Fur Collar Jacket ($25, originally $50) is my favorite; it's the perfect blend of chic and cozy.
Also, if you purchase a gift card or e-certificate from now until Friday, you get free shipping on your order. Enter GIFTCARD09 upon checkout.
Upon walking to work today, I noticed a very stylish girl wearing a camel coat, skinny black jeans, and booties. At first glance, it didn't look like anything to ogle over, but something about her outfit was extra special — a-ha! It was her short sleeve coat. See, she layered a pretty semi-sheer black chiffon blouse underneath her wool jacket for a cool textural effect, and of course, added warmth. I like it!
You must have noticed the tweed rage these days. Everyone is wearing it in some form. I loved Olivia Palermo's tweed H&M shorts so much, I got the matching jacket recently. While most tweed jackets are cropped, this Vintage Gray Stone Tweed Coat, size small, is equally chic. It looks good open and closed, and the black piping and big buttons are super cute. Especially if you live in cold climate, I suggest bundling up with this tweed-tastic piece.
Everyone needs good outerwear for Fall. Don't have yours yet? No worries, Urban Outfitters has got you covered, literally. From now until Monday, Oct. 12, it is offering 30 percent off its stylish outerwear — all 64 of them! Tough leather jackets, elegant tweed, studs, faux fur, and capes are just the beginning. There really is something for everyone, so don't miss out.
I finally saw I Love You, Man and now Rashida Jones is on my girldar. She has a unique look and just seems like a cool, down-to-earth chick— and this is what her fashion choices tell me, too. At the LA premiere of Funny People she looked chic in separates. While her black and white tubular skirt is lovely, her curvacious blazer denotes modernity. Without the curvy silhouette, her ensemb would have been vanilla, with it, it's cookies and cream. See what I mean?
Now that summer clothing is going on sale and pre-fall clothing is hitting shelves, it's a great time to start thinking about purchasing midseason pieces. Midseason pieces are those that are versatile and can be worn during both seasons. A classic black and white stripe jacket, for instance, will keep you warm on a cool summer evening while it also makes a fine staple in a fall wardrobe. Our favorites, all under $200, above.
In April, you may not feel inspired to invest in shorts and little dresses, even though they're delivering to the stores by the week. Picking up some staples while you wait for the weather to turn will help you prepare for spring without forcing you shop for things you don't want. Whether it's a new pair of shades, riding boots, everyday jeans or an anorak, we find that these mid-season investments are rarely regretted. That said, here are our favorite weekend anoraks from a few accessible price points.
Not to be confused with a Macintosh computer, a Mackintosh is a form of waterproof raincoat, first sold in 1824, made out of rubberized fabric. It is named after its Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh, though a letter k is commonly added. In the present day, the Mackintosh style of coat has become generic, but a genuine Mackintosh coat should be made from rubberized or rubber laminated material.
