10 Unconventionally Cool Pearl Jewels
Pearls are a jewelry box mainstay — they're timeless, elegant, and we wear them all the time. But, if that pair passed down from grandma is starting to feel just a little tired, think what those shiny pearls would look like refit in new-jeweled confections. We saw evidence of this at the Chanel Spring 2012 show, where the brand famous for pearls showed them in modern ways. Our curated batch of pearled pieces also do it, re-imagining the iconic pearl in collared necklaces, spiked and studded cuffs, and edgier doubled rings to pair with all your favorite Fall separates. It's a collection of jewelry that reads maybe just a touch cooler than your mother's — or mother's mother's— string of pearls. There's no more iconic ode to LBDs and pearls than Holly Golightly standing before a Tiffany's window in the classic Breakfast at Tiffany's. We still have our pearls and LBDs, but unless the prim ladylike look your grandmother rocked is your goal, it's time to think about combining pearls and little black dresses in fresh and modern ways. We found 10 dresses and 10 pearl necklaces that are incredibly chic and fresh, and when paired together, they are knockout gorgeous.
Inspired Spring: Coco Chanel's Tailored Chic
When Audrey Tautou brought the spark and sophisticated Parisian style of Coco Chanel to brazen life in the flick Coco Before Chanel, we got hooked on the iconic designer in her earlier years. How to adopt Coco's youthful vitality and style? It's about a smart jacket, a string of pearls, the ubiquitous striped top, and lots of menswear elements: wide trousers, vests, a hat. To make it modern, add casual elements to these more tailored, classic pieces. For example, mix a boucle jacket with a t-shirt, skinny jeans, and brogues. Or try wide-leg trousers with a slouchy silk shirt and tons of bracelets. We've gathered the best elements for a chic, ladylike wardrobe that is just a little smart 'n' sassy. Coco, we hope you would approve.

Sneak Peek! Thakoon's Tantalizing Tasaki Baubles
Get ready to ogle. Thakoon's debut jewelry line for Tasaki is all about classic pieces with a funky, modern twist. "I really wanted to just go back to the DNA of what Tasaki’s about, which is beautiful pearls, beautiful materials and beautiful diamonds,” said Panichgul. "I wanted to put some youthful spirit into pearls.” That's exactly what he did, engineering fresh two-fingered rings, lusty lariat necklaces, and cunning chain link bracelets.

Thakoon's play on old-meets-new is beyond genius — I can easily picture a PYT like Diane Kruger or distinguished fashionphile Daphne Guinness donning these pearl rings. Thakoon's baubles aren't cheap — prices range from $5,577 to $39,041 — but a girl can always dream.

Thakoon said he wanted to bring a young, more contemporary edge to the classical jewelry collection known for its pearls. “It’s working with the materials, making them feel a bit more sculptural as well, and modern. I wanted to put some youthful spirit into pearls," said Panichgul of his first foray into jewelry design.
Thakoon's pieces include two-finger pearl rings and raw pearls on lariat necklaces with prices ranging from approximately $5,500 to $39,000 at the current exchange. For images of the collection, check out the gallery below.
