Anna Wintour's First Vogue Cover: "This One Broke All the Rules"

Anna Wintour says she wasn't surprised when the printers called and asked whether her very first cover of Vogue in Nov.

Anna Wintour says she wasn't surprised when the printers called and asked whether her very first cover of Vogue in Nov. 1988 was a mistake. That cover, which featured model Michaela Bercu photographed by Peter Lindbergh in a beaded Christian Lacroix couture jacket and a pair of Guess Jeans, was — in Wintour's words — "so unlike the studied and elegant close-ups that were typical of Vogue's covers back then, with tons of makeup and major jewelry."

"I couldn't blame them," Wintour wrote. "This one broke all the rules. Michaela wasn't looking at you, and worse, she had her eyes almost closed. Her hair was blowing across her face. It looked easy, casual, a moment that had been snapped on the street, which it had been, and which was the whole point. Afterwards, in the way that these things can happen, people applied all sorts of interpretations: It was about mixing high and low, Michaela was pregnant, it was a religious statement. But none of these things was true. I had just looked at that picture and sensed the winds of change. And you can't ask for more from a cover image than that."

One of Gisele Bundchen's first activities as the face of David Yurman was to hang out on a beach in Malibu while Peter Lindbergh photographed her wearing Yurman's creations.

The resulting images will be used for the brand's Fall 2012 campaign, which draws on the inviting simplicity of California beaches for inspiration. Watch Bundchen pose on the beach in the video below, then take a sneak peek at the ads in the gallery.

>> In April, Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted exiting Coach headquarters with company creative director Reed Krakoff. Soon after, Coach confirmed that Paltrow was set to serve as brand ambassador for an international campaign to mark Coach's 70th anniversary this Fall and next Spring. Krakoff called Paltrow “a natural choice . . . She embodies the spirit, energy and elegance of the Coach brand.”

Peter Lindbergh shot Paltrow on the top of the Tudor City skyscrapers in Manhattan for ads that will only be used in Asian and European markets — and now we have a first look at the campaign.

The recently married Reese Witherspoon shows a sexier side on the May cover of Vogue, wearing a black and white Roland Mouret dress. It's a welcome surprise from a woman who chose blush pink for her wedding gown. Says co-star Robert Pattinson in the interview, "In terms of public perception, she’s thought of as America’s Sweetheart. And she kind of is in a lot of ways. But I think that she’s a lot bawdier than that, a lot more raucous. It did actually shock me to see that. She’s tough. You wouldn’t want to get into an argument with her at all." For the full Jonathan Van Meter interview with Reese, visit Vogue. With her upcoming movie, Water for Elephants, set to release, Vogue chose an appropriate setting for her shoot with photographer Peter Lindbergh — a circus tent complete with elephant — all the better to showcase a stellar lineup of dresses that include Dior, Sophie Theallet, Dolce and Gabbana and Narciso Rodriguez. See our slideshow for the looks for the gorgeous looks, including the custom Alexander Wang dress that didn't run on the cover.

Garance Dore Captures Behind The Scenes of David Yurman's Fall 2010 Campaign Featuring Kate Moss

>> David Yurman invited Garance Dore to St. Barths back in May to capture behind the scenes images of the brand's Fall 2010 campaign shoot. In doing so, the recent Paris transplant achieved one of her life dreams: taking part in a photo shoot with Peter Lindbergh, who's been photographing ads for Yurman for the past ten years.

"Lindbergh’s shoots were like I always dreamt they would be, the big black screen in the middle of the beach, steamy jazz playing in the background, sublime and natural girls, the make-up a bit undone by the salted sea spray, sand in their hair, light right in their eyes," wrote Dore. "I didn’t ask him [Lindbergh] any questions. My happiness was simply in observing. Sometimes he’d come up to me, tell me a few stories, ask me some questions, try to understand what was this weird thing I do: this blog thing, it really interested him." A gallery of Dore's images, below, plus the only Fall 2010 David Yurman ad so far released — of Kate Moss styled by Alex White.

The first time around, Anna Wintour got the world's top designers on film for a FNO PSA — now, our favorite models are taking their turn to spread the word about the best night in fashion. Director and photographer Peter Lindbergh took to the streets with all of our favorite models — Karlie Kloss, Doutzen Kroes, Liya Kebede, Karolina Kurkova, Lara Stone, Miranda Kerr, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson, to name a few — and captured them in all of NYC's boroughs, decked out in this year's FNO tees.

In two days, the supermodels were filmed all over the city, featuring its iconic locales — and the PSA scored an iconic soundtrack to boot: David Bowie gave permission to use his song "Fashion" in the video. Look for the PSA spots launching on network TV, in NYC cabs, online, and from Sept. 3 to 10, you'll find it on the big screen in Times Square. And don't forget, we'll be joining in the FNO fun with Elizabeth and James — see you there!

“This year, it was really about fashion hitting the streets,” Trey Laird, who developed the segment, told WWD. “It was important that all of New York City was represented.” Thus, filming locations included PS 1 in Long Island City, the Bronx Zoo, Central Park, and Lincoln Center. Tabitha Simmons styled the shoot (behind the scenes images here), and the resulting 30-, 15-, and 10-second spots launch on television, in taxi cabs, and online today. From Sept. 3 to 10, they will be shown nine times an hour on the Toshiba screen in Times Square.
