Gap-Toothed Ashley Smith Makes First Runway Appearance in Peter Som's Spring 2011 Sea of Color

>> Peter Som loves his color — his approach is, he admits: “I usually say yes to everything.

>> Peter Som loves his color — his approach is, he admits: “I usually say yes to everything. Then I edit down.” This season, he had a vision of what he refers to as Peggy Guggenheim meets Miami, and an affinity for colors that looked sun-bleached, “or like Popsicles.”

The product paid tribute to the ‘60s, with shift dresses playing a starring role in the highly textural collection, which came in an array of structured, loose, and fitted cuts covered in a mix of florals — ranging from soft brocade to brighter silk prints. And Charlotte Dellal, who was front row, collaborated with Som on printed sky-high Charlotte Olympia wedges for the occasion.

Closing out the show, in her first major runway appearance, was Ashley Smith, who between her gap-tooth grin and ample bustline has garnered lots of pre-season buzz. Post-show, Som didn't have much of a breather: he headed straight over to Tommy Hilfiger, where he's a consultant, for fittings.

2011 Spring New York Fashion Week: Peter Som

Vibrant! Vivacious! Exuberant! Alive! Peter Som's Spring '11 creations scream those keywords and beyond.

Vibrant! Vivacious! Exuberant! Alive! Peter Som's Spring '11 creations scream those keywords and beyond. It's a lesson in how color can be synonymous with being fashion forward. Let's break it down: Som sent down a bevy of floral prints, colorblocks, solids, tweeds, and a few black and white pieces to temper the fun. I'm sensing a hint of mod, a nod to whimsy, a touch of surfer inspiration, and an overall polished sensibility. The most interesting concept is the one in the center — tweed on caffeine, love it!

The 2010 CFDA Awards Are Here! Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu Take Home Wins

>> This evening at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, fashion's finest gathered for the 2010 CFDA Awards.

>> This evening at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, fashion's finest gathered for the 2010 CFDA Awards. Jak & Jil's Tommy Ton snapped photos of the arrivals, J.Crew's Jenna Lyons introduced herself to Isabel Toledo, and the ever-punctual Anna Wintour was later than usual, appearing after the pre-awards cocktails were in full swing.

Wintour put on her signature shades for the ceremony itself, but off they came when International Award winner Christopher Bailey thanked her (along with Tom Ford and Donna Karan) — in fact, she was beaming. Later, she got on stage to present Michael Kors with his Lifetime Achievement Award — he received a standing ovation — and told a story about how she went on a trip to Jamaica with Kors; when Ralph Lauren arrived, Kors got in the ocean and stayed there for hours because he didn't want Lauren to see him in his swimsuit.

Speaking of Lauren, he received the Popular Vote for the second year running — although he wasn't in attendance this evening. Sarah Jessica Parker, dressed in a custom gown by new Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton, presented Lee Alexander McQueen posthumously with the Special Tribute Award, noting that the designer had "the most beautiful hands I've ever seen," before models took the stage in the designer's last works.

Accepting her Fashion Icon Award, Iman thanked her parents for the longest neck on any model at any go-see in the world and joked to husband David Bowie: "Move over. You're not the only icon in the house." And finally, Marc Jacobs scored the Womenwear Award — he thanked bloggers for his win and said to Robert Duffy: "i want to thank [Duffy], without you this dream would never have come true."

And the winners are . . . (nominees here):

  • Accessory Designer of the Year: Alexis Bittar
  • Popular Vote Award: Ralph Lauren
  • Menswear Designer of the Year: Marcus Wainwright and David Neville for Rag & Bone
  • Swarovski Award for Menswear: Richard Chai
  • Swarovski Award for Womenswear: Jason Wu
  • Swarovski Award for Accessories: Alexander Wang
  • Womenswear Designer of the Year: Marc Jacobs

For Fall '10, designers — such as Adam Lippes, Peter Som, Michael Kors, and Tommy Hilfiger — swapped out shorter hemlines for longer luxurious lengths.

For Fall '10, designers — such as Adam Lippes, Peter Som, Michael Kors, and Tommy Hilfiger — swapped out shorter hemlines for longer luxurious lengths. Maxed-out skirts are a sophisticated and refreshing alternative to the tights and minis combo and can be worn both casually or ultra-glamorous. Peep how Adam Lippes and Peter Som experimented with floaty, printed chiffon layers, while Michael Kors and Tibi decorated their long skirts with beads and shimmer. We love them all.

2010 Fall New York: Peter Som

Peter Som strikes again.

Peter Som strikes again. He delivered an eclectic collection rich in color, texture, and whimsy. Som is emerging as the freshest mixmaster on the block — my eyes could not keep up with the multitude of fantastic clothes. With an underlying bohemian vibe, separates were thrown together in a haphazard way, but always retaining a ladylike air. Layers were often cinched together with hardware belts, furs were dipped in jewel tones, cardigans were essential pieces, and happy hats were an adorable accessory. Super saucy lace up boots by Charlotte Olympia supplied a slice of edgy Victorian. Get ready to swoon.

Donatella Brings that Versace Glamour to the Whitney Museum Art Gala

>> For the second year running, the Whitney Art Musem Gala was Donatella Versace's party.  Editors — Olivier Zahm, Lauren Santo Domingo, Glenda Bailey — commingled with designers — Peter Som, Moises de la Renta, Ruffian's Claude Morais and Brian Wolk — and a smattering of models like Chanel Iman and Hana Soukupova.

Christopher Kane's Versus designs even made an appearance — the Fall 2009 crystal shoes were on Byrdie Bell's feet, and Taylor Momsen — who seems to be close with the Versaces, particularly Allegra, changed into a black Spring 2010 Versus frock for the Studio Party post-Gala Dinner.

Donatella was fashionably late to the party — two hours in, she was nowhere to be found; perhaps she was still upstairs tending to VIPs — as was Lindsay Lohan, who swept in, all blonde hair and gold dress — earning comparisons to Donatella's trademark look. Lohan said she came "for Donatella" before beelining to Brian Atwood for a chat.  Keeping with the "art chic" theme, the walls of one whole room at the party downstairs was covered in paper for guests to scribble on.
