MAC Pulls the Controversial Rodarte Collection

You may already be familiar with the controversy surrounding the MAC x Rodarte makeup collection, which was inspired by the designers' Fall 2010 show.

You may already be familiar with the controversy surrounding the MAC x Rodarte makeup collection, which was inspired by the designers' Fall 2010 show. The line's ghostly imagery and the names of products (Juarez, Factory) caused an uproar, with some people saying they made light of the series of grisly rapes and murders of maquiladora workers in Juarez.

After MAC apologized and donated all profits to help women in Juarez, there's now another update to the story. Instead of releasing the products in September and donating all the proceeds to initiatives designed to help women of Juarez as initially planned, MAC has decided simply not to ship the collection to stores in the first place. (All projected global profits will still be donated to organizations that help women in the border city.) Do you think MAC is doing the right thing by pulling the collection?

MAC To Donate ALL Profits From Controversial Rodarte Collection

You've probably heard about the controversy over the forthcoming MAC/Rodarte makeup collaboration.

You've probably heard about the controversy over the forthcoming MAC/Rodarte makeup collaboration. Long story short, the Mexico-inspired collection included nail polish colors called Juarez and Factory — which, when paired with the ghostlike marketing imagery, recalled for some the brutal murders of thousands of female maquiladora workers in Juarez. After apologizing and agreeing to change both the names and the marketing materials, MAC has now announced that all global profits from this makeup collection will be donated to a newly created project in Mexico.

A First Peek at Rodarte's Black Swan Ballet Costumes

>> Along with the announcement that Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan will open the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 1 comes the release of the first images from the film — including a first look (left) at the 40 costumes Laura and Kate Mulleavy designed for the movie's entire ballet corps. Their work will be featured in the film's scenes from "Swan Lake," and this marks Rodarte's first foray into costuming for film.

The Mulleavys were honored last night for winning the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards fashion design category by host Michelle Obama, but pulled out on attending the ceremony early yesterday morning. Their spokesman sent an email saying that the designers “had a change of plans," later adding that they “had a family obligation to attend to in Los Angeles."

Nicholas Kirkwood's Fall/Winter collection for Rodarte. I've read that they were inspired and made to look like melted candle wax. Interesting.
