We rely on Roland Mouret to deliver femininity and polish.
Fall 2011 Paris Fashion Week: Roland Mouret 2011-03-04 12:26:23

We rely on Roland Mouret to deliver femininity and polish. For Fall '11 he succeeds in crafting a collection in the same vein, though this time, channeling a softer side in the form of easier silhouettes. Roland, too, opts for longer hemlines and shows nods to the '70s in furs, wide-leg trousers, and draped halter tops. But there are still the cinched waists and body-conscious details we expect, even in the design of jackets and coats, which too nip at the waist. It's a careful balance of what the modern femme craves — more structure, pants, and separates — and then, again something equally refined, but less structural, more movement and easy, womanly dressing. In the end, fan Victoria Beckham could find her cocktail dress just as easily as one with a taste for softer, subtler femininity could find hers.

  • Trends: Fur, slits, longer hemlines, draping, print.
  • Colors: Black, green, blue, burgundy, yellow-gold, soft tweed.
  • Key Looks: Yellow-gold double slit dress with black fur collar, deep-v full-length emerald green dress.
  • Accessories: T-strap heels, skinny black belts.
  • Who Would Wear It: Carey Mulligan and other girls with a taste for polished femininity; Mouret fans like Victoria Beckham.

Roland Mouret Shoots Down Rumors of Designing for Victoria Beckham Once and For All

    >> When Victoria Beckham showed her first dress collection back in 2008, many noted the striking similarities to her friend Roland Mouret's work.

    >> When Victoria Beckham showed her first dress collection back in 2008, many noted the striking similarities to her friend Roland Mouret's work. Style.com proclaimed at the time: "If the collection owes a debt to anyone, it's Roland Mouret, whose Galaxy dress gave curves to even the most skeletal of celebrities." But when Mouret was asked again recently whether he helped Beckham design the collection, he replied: "Oh my God, that question! Politicians, movie stars, it's always the first things they want to know and I'm like, why? Why would I want to design a collection for Victoria Beckham? Yes, she is a friend, and yes, she asks for advice, and yes, I told her the name of a pattern cutter, but she has lots of friends she asks for advice — Marc Jacobs. I like to help people that's all." Roland Mouret Buys Back Name After Five Years

    >> Roland Mouret has bought his trademark back from his former investors and is readying his first flagship in London's Mayfair for February or March.

    >> Roland Mouret has bought his trademark back from his former investors and is readying his first flagship in London's Mayfair for February or March. Mouret split from his backers Sharai and Andre Meyers in October 2005 over strategic differences — the Meyerses have owned 100 percent of the Roland Mouret name since. He then formed a 50-50 venture, 19RM, with British impresario Simon Fuller in September 2006, showing under the name RM by Roland Mouret. Mouret bought his name back from the Meyerses for an undisclosed sum.

“It took time — but I am really happy. And I am so proud that I continued working — even without my name,” Mouret said. "When Simon and I started together, we made a plan. I wanted to get my name back in a natural way, and I didn’t want to get into any legal battles. Simon has allowed me to develop a business while ensuring I always had enough space and resources to follow my intuition and establish the company.”
