Backstage at French designer Sophie Theallet's Fall 2013 fashion show, makeup artist Tom Pecheux used MAC Cosmetics to create a beautiful look in a "casual, functional way." After examining the feminine qualities and colors of the clothing, Tom wanted a face that was charming, polished, and glowing to complement the collection.

The look: An "old money" makeup look that doesn't scream show-off.
Who would wear it: Any type of woman, as long as she is comfortable in her own body and has a little bit of style.
Key products: MAC creamy blue shadow mixed with warm bronze shimmer on the lids for a reptilian feel.

Sophie Theallet has a way with women.

Sophie Theallet has a way with women. "She has the ability to make women look very sexy. Her designs don't show anything, but make you dream of everything," boasted key makeup artist Tom Pecheux. See the makeup and hair that's inspired by the elegant (but naughty) woman her fashion evokes.

The look: Smudged eyeliner, sleek faux bobs, and bare nails.
The inspiration: Twiggy, color, and a postromp glow.
Who would wear it: The woman who wears a garter belt underneath her ball gown.

Sophie Theallet Spring 2013

It was all about sweet layering for Sophie Theallet's Spring '13 collection.

It was all about sweet layering for Sophie Theallet's Spring '13 collection. The show opened with a fine-knit top styled under a sheer dress, setting the tone for a sophisticated, retro-inspired collection — with a youthful twist. It was all in the details as silk organza skirts with frayed seams caught the light on the runway revealing pretty printed slips. The array of beautifully cut dresses were dipped in vibrant shades of blue, red, orange, green, and purple, while more subdued cocktail dresses were reinvented with Theallet's artful use of prints. The show closed out with gorgeous, flowy dresses — the dragonfly printed gown received crowd gasps and a flurry of photo snaps — billowing down the runway. Indeed, Theallet presented what surely will become a new way to look at the traditional classics.

  • Trends: Layers, sheer details, vibrant colors, printed dresses.
  • Colors: Vibrant blue, yellow, red, orange, green, purple, fuchsia.
  • Key Piece: The dragonfly printed dress with a thigh-high slip was so dramatic.
  • Accessories: Vibrant, T-strap heels, strappy sandals.
  • Who Should Wear It: Ladies looking for classic, flattering silhouettes with a colorful punch of personality like First Lady Michelle Obama.

The gossamer wings of a dragonfly found themselves as a visual and material motif in Sophie Theallet's light-as-air Spring 2013 collection. The bugs formed prints on everything from simple cardigans to floor-length gowns and even a camisole paired with trim, printed trousers. But the most arresting looks in this very pretty collection were the skirts and dresses — sometimes solid, sometimes printed — covered with organza. The sheer material obscured some of the prints, creating an eye-catching interest as the models moved down the runway. It also helped give other dresses an element of depth and shape they wouldn't have had otherwise.

Sophie Theallet has teamed up with The Limited, and will offer a Holiday capsule collection at most of the retail chain's stores come November.

In her position as the brand's exclusive guest designer, Theallet said she wanted to bring "the luxurious nonchalance of my aesthetic to an affordable price point." And while details on what the products will look like — or how much they will cost — weren't clear when the collaboration was announced on Monday, Theallet is committed to placing an emphasis on quality. "I like that challenge . . . to make the best product possible," she said.

The designer's contract with The Limited is slated to extend beyond the Holiday collection. The retail chain's CEO Linda Heasley said Theallet "has exquisite taste, and is genuine and approachable, which we love."

Theallet has collaborated with mass-market brands before. She worked with The Gap after winning the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in 2009, and last year created a line of shoes and handbags for Nine West.
