  • Barneys unveiled elements of its website redesign on Thursday and will launch the new site's full features on Monday. Next week, customers will be able to "favorite" products — similar to "liking" a page on Facebook — and share their favorites through social media channels. "We are not changing the DNA of Barneys but reviving the way we communicate with customers," said Barneys' chief merchant Daniella Vitale. [Barneys]

  • Rodarte has partnered with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to create costumes for an upcoming production of Don Giovanni. "The costumes are the kind of thing that you want to lift the music — you don't want to compete or kill it," said Kate Mulleavy. [Styleite]

  • Istituto Marangoni, the Milanese fashion school where Domenico Dolce learned his craft, is planning to open an outpost in Shanghai. "We are proud to accompany the developing process of the fashion system in China," said the new school's director, Tim Borgmann. [Material World]

  • A California judge granted class action status to a lawsuit against L'Oreal in which plaintiffs complain the brand didn't warn consumers that its Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum is flammable. Almost 10 million units of the serum have been sold in the United States since February 2008. [Fashion Etc.]

  • Net-a-Porter has turned out to be a good investment for Richemont, the luxury conglomerate that owns Cartier, Chloé, and Alaia. The brand's sales helped boost Richemont's profits by 43 percent to $1.9 billion in 2011. [Vogue UK]

  • St. John is looking for a new owner. The American brand, which is known for its suits and which has counted Angelina Jolie and Kate Winslet among its spokeswomen in recent years, has been owned by Vestar Capital Partners since 1999. [WWD]

Fashionista reports on a giveaway taking place at beauty counters all over the country starting this January 20th due to a lawsuit filed in 2003.

Karl Lagerfeld hasn't changed his vulgar ways but he's also planning to address the recession on the Chanel runway by way of something he calls "new modesty".

There's an antiquity trend that cropped up this Spring 09 and should, according to some, be prominent through Spring 2010.

Trend Alert: Decadent Doodles

What's your signature doodle?

What's your signature doodle? Mine is an asterisk, or I do stars, and sometimes I do this cool heart chain squiggly thing. Obviously, I'd have to show you for you to get me. Or, I could wear it on my sleeve. Art and fashion collide in the coolest ways, and these ladies are flaunting decadent doodles. Joy in punchy Matthew Wiiliamson, Emma in abstract Giambattista Valli, Anne in regal Marchesa. It really pops.

H&M

Fashion in 50 Seconds 9/25 with St. John, H&M, and Prada

Two very interesting pieces of news from conservative St John's today that piqued our interest and have us wondering if in fact maybe they aren't so stodgy in their outlook after all.

Two very interesting pieces of news from conservative St John's today that piqued our interest and have us wondering if in fact maybe they aren't so stodgy in their outlook after all. We associate St. John's with our stepmother complete with chunky heels and big pearls so the fact that they are launching a new better contemporary line for resort called SoCa that is aimed at a younger customer (mind you their version of younger is targeting 35 to 55 year olds) and will operate separately from the brand’s signature label.

Even more interesting? St. John is launching a full-fledged social network integrated with an online designer brand store. CEO Glenn McMahon is either a complete genius for this or a total moron. We don't know a lot of 45 year olds that are big on the social networks but we love the idea of letting customers get closer to a genuine luxury brand. Take note Mr. Arnault.

This Scottish lass calls fashion a blight, really she just stops short of calling it Coutorture.

Skateboard culture is still with us and they are hard on the shoes. But they would rather keep buying new ones then have a pair that can't be destroyed. What no Kevlar guys?

Prada swears its not talking to Dubai investors. Right, and that postponed IPO means nothing either.

Though there is still M&A activity in the luxury sector, if you happen to have a yacht or watch company you want to unload. But the real opportunity is building up luxury empires in markets with an emerging ruling class. Let's hear it for capitalism guys, well except for when the risks of capitalism turn us socialism. That's just lame. Can't have it both ways guys. Or can you? Don't worry, the best part about buying luxury is that it lasts. So when that portfolio tanks at least you know your Jil Sander wasn't a depreciating asset. But hey if all else fails H&M is FINALLY bringing cheap fast fashion to the Champs Elysée. Did we mention the end is near? Parce que tu fait comme tu voulez aux Champs Elysees

Fab Flash: Royal Underground's Rockin' Women's Wear

Before Angelina Jolie became the face of St. John, there was Kelly Gray, the model/daughter of the American luxury brand’s founders.

Before Angelina Jolie became the face of St. John, there was Kelly Gray, the model/daughter of the American luxury brand’s founders.

I’m thrilled that Kelly handed down the modeling throne to Angelina, not because Angie has an impeccable jawline and flawless skin, but because it's given Kelly the time to work on her soon-to-be launched women’s wear collection and men’s jewelry line for Royal Underground, the contemporary men’s wear company she started with Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx. I know, it sounds like an unlikely pair considering St. John is more for ladies who lunch than rugged rock ‘n rollers. It's been reported, that that’s precisely what Gray intended: “It’s fairly different from my St. John life."

Thanks to Kelly and Nikki, come late summer, when their new line lands in stores, our wardrobes will be much more rockin’ and rollin' with pieces ranging from leather jackets, cashmere sweaters, T-shirts, jeans, dresses and skirts. Let the hard-edge splurging begin!
