Cool Idea: Cricket Camper Uses Space Station Ideas

What happens when an International Space Station architect wants to go camping in comfort?

What happens when an International Space Station architect wants to go camping in comfort? He doesn't upgrade to a better air mattress that's for sure. Instead, he designs a camper that combines his "NASA experience with his love of the earth." Architect and designer Garrett Finney's Cricket combines the durability of a solid trailer with the versatility of a popup. The Cricket sleeps four people (with two in hammocks) and when the trailer is parked and popped, it has over six feet of headroom.

If the Cricket is your idea of the perfect Summer camping comfort, find out more about this cool concept and its eco credentials on Treehugger!

August is upon us, which means that autumn isn't far behind.

August is upon us, which means that autumn isn't far behind. Since Summer is always much too short, you should memorialize the season year-round with artwork that represents one of the most glorious rituals of hot weather: the beach. I've found some lovely artwork that celebrates beach days. Check out a variety of pieces, from the abstracts to landscapes, that will take you back to the beach.

Ladylike Box Bags Look Right — For Now and For Fall

>> Hey, boxy lady.

>> Hey, boxy lady. Lanvin, Celine, and Kenzo all showed hard-structured bags for Fall 2011, and ever since Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen turned up to last month's CFDA Awards sporting a pastel pair from The Row (left), this retro-inspired silhouette has been topping the hit list. Polished enough to go from office to evening, and streamlined enough to look chic with almost anything, this compact style will also take you straight from Summer to Fall with ease.

While Fall 2011 collections won't hit stores until August, that doesn't mean you can't capture a little box magic right now — J.Crew, Alexander Wang, and Akris all have similar ladylike options available now. To get in on the trend, look for super-structured satchels with single top handles, cross-body straps, and sleek, minimal hardware — or just click through to see a few of our favorites.

Another Cool Way to Hang a Succulent

Artist, designer, and plant expert Linda Hsiao has designed everything from eyewear to toys to handbags and gardens. But her "succulumps," as she calls them, really caught my eye.

Artist, designer, and plant expert Linda Hsiao has designed everything from eyewear to toys to handbags and gardens. But her "succulumps," as she calls them, really caught my eye. Melding a California '70s sensibility with a 21st-century appreciation of low-water, easy-care plants, these succulumps are truly an unusual and unexpected way to display these favorite plants. And while I usually shun macrame, Hsiao's deconstructed, wilder look to the tecnique is a vast improvement on the typical '70s macrame style. These plant hangings remind me a little of Fedor van der Valk's string gardens as well.

Hsiao is also in the process of creating a collection of ceramic living sculptures, including jewelry and other succulent grouping systems. Do you like the look of these hangings? Would you try something like this at your home — or better yet, on a garden patio or outdoor Summer seating area?

Is Your Hood Experiencing a Heat Wave?

While I sometimes miss the hot, humid Summers I grew up with in the Midwest, I'm not envying the temperatures across the Midwest and the East Coast this weekend.

While I sometimes miss the hot, humid Summers I grew up with in the Midwest, I'm not envying the temperatures across the Midwest and the East Coast this weekend. With the heat index reaching triple digits, the weather's downright brutal. What's the weather like where you live? More importantly, if it is hot in your hood, how are you dealing with it?

Before and After: Our Tragically Weathered Deck Gets a Much-Needed Summer Maintenance Update

Standard advice for deck maintenance is that it should be pressure washed and restained at least every other year.

Standard advice for deck maintenance is that it should be pressure washed and restained at least every other year. Let's just say that we haven't been that dutiful in our deck maintenance and leave it at that. It was definitely past due time to deal with our decks — as this photo demonstrates.  As you can see, the redwood was gray and green — not the warm wood color with which it started life. Plus, there was lichen growth on the wood, and I was concerned about the wood's quality deteriorating. The last thing my husband and I wanted to do was replace the deck, since it's earthquake retrofitted and bolted halfway into our house's footprint.

We considered doing the pressure washing and staining ourselves, but since we have two levels of decking (see part of the bottom level below) that measure in at around 1200 square feet, this was no small undertaking. We'd have to devote two separate weekends for pressure washing and staining, and hire a babysitter to care for our toddler while we were working. So, we decided to hire Cal Preserving to come in and do the work for us.Want to see how the decks turned out? Keep reading to find out!
