Stella McCartney's Parisian Opening: Models, Jewels, and Some Rolling Paper

>> Stella McCartney marked the end of couture last night by debuting two things — her new Paris flagship (which actually opened in November) and a Cartier sapphire and diamond pendant that her dad gave her mom in the '70s and just passed onto her.  Joining her in celebration were Lara Stone, who recently moved to London, Stefano Pilati, Heidi Mount, Daphne Guinness, Lily Donaldson, and the ever-goofy Sasha Pivovarova, who in addition to her book for Prada, has now been invited to illustrate a children's book for Karl Lagerfeld.  There was fun to be had by all, including Francois-Henri Pinault, who joined in the game of "Who am I?," and ran around with Suzy Menkes and the rest of the bunch, cigarette rolling paper stuck to their foreheads.*image: source

Quote of the Day

Quote Of The Day: Suzy Menkes On Chanel And The Couture Shows

Now that the bubble of extravagance has burst, it was up to the handful of couturiers still showing in Paris to make the summer collections relevant to a changed world.
Now that the bubble of extravagance has burst, it was up to the handful of couturiers still showing in Paris to make the summer collections relevant to a changed world. But the masters of the fashion universe did not opt for low-budget luxury - rather for couture-light - using creativity to capture the hopeful post-Obama spirit.

Will Fall 2009 Be A Season Of 19th Century Costumery?

The Christian Dior Spring 2009 Haute Couture collection showed today and John Galliano's frocks have us thinking that costumery might not end up being exclusive to his catwalks.

The Christian Dior Spring 2009 Haute Couture collection showed today and John Galliano's frocks have us thinking that costumery might not end up being exclusive to his catwalks. In fact, Alexander McQueen showed a collection comprised of hyper-masculine 19th century British archetypes just last week in Milan (and his Pre-Fall was set to a similar landscape too). Is this a British thing? A coincidence? Or could it be a trend toward historical moments economically similar to to our current one? Suzy Menkes noted communist era trends in the menswear shows, and Cathy Horyn commented on industrial/utility vibe. Something tells us we haven't seen the last of these bold references, but only time will tell...

Kayne West rants and raves on video about his Louis Vuitton sneakers, accidently conducts product placement for Goyard.

Suzy Menkes writes on the Fall 2009 menswear season, and divides the shows into instances of either rampant communism or capitalism

The Spring 2009 Haute Couture shows begin today and, surprisingly, with as much demand from global clients as usual

Beth Ditto To Grace First Cover of Love?

>> Some of Katie Grand's nearest and dearest — Giles Deacon, Agyness Deyn, Alexander McQueen — came out to the Royal Academy in London last night to celebrate the first-ever party for her new magazine Love.  Guests sipped tea and participated in a treasure hunt, but the night's big attention-getter was Beth Ditto — she's rumored to be Love's first cover star.  No confirmation yet — but a good space to watch might be the magazine's under-the-radar blog, which so far chronicles the move to a new office, visits to showrooms, and Giles holding scotch eggs over his eyes.*image: source

Guess the Fabulous Fashion Insider

You all did a wonderful job matching the fabulous fashion editor to her fashion bible. I'm impressed! Now I've dug deeper into the fashion world and have found fashion insiders that may or may not look remotely familiar to you. If they do, awesome, and if not, it will be a learning experience. Let's get started. Oh, and no Googling names!

Chanel

Keep The Light, Cut The Sweet

Suzy Menkes, ever the astute fashion observer, notes that as a new generation of fashion consumers ages out of girlish styles they looking for clothes that keep the lightness but cut the sweetness. Thankfully there are many lines to grow into as designers as diverse as Akris, Anne Valerie Hash, Issey Miyake, and yes even Chloé help us ease into our older years with light feminine clothing that is refreshingly free of cloying adolescence.

Fashion In 50 Seconds 10/01/08 With Sonia Rykiel, Paul Smith, and Browns

In our current economic situation, and considering that we're finishing off the Paris shows, it feel the right thing to pay attention to designers with decades of experience (and the economic ups and downs that go with that) under their belt.

In our current economic situation, and considering that we're finishing off the Paris shows, it feel the right thing to pay attention to designers with decades of experience (and the economic ups and downs that go with that) under their belt. Sonia Rykiel spoke with WWD in an interview that went live this morning, where she talks about creative distribution in her company, now also headed by her daughter, Nathalie, and designer Gabrielle Greiss, as well as her beginnings as a designer forty years ago. Considering all we've been reading falls on these lines, it's a comfort to be given some perspective.

Oh dear, Paul Smith is opening an outlet in Williamsburg. Prepare yourself for editorial and conversational anecdotes about how "up and coming" is the neighborhood that is neither cutting edge nor undiscovered. That's not to say that we don't think the Williamsburg area isn't filled with talented, unique people, many of them important to the culture of fashion in New York, but we're not shocked at the arrival of the outlet. We've an APC outlet just down the road, OAK just up, and about a dozen bourge-y cafes in between. People shouldn't be shocked by this decision. We've seen Paul Smith outposts in the smallest, most desolate, European airports.

Suzy Menkes just celebrated twenty years as fashion editor at the International Herald Tribune, and there's a fashion designer-studded video to prove it. Menkes we saw quite a bit from London Fashion Week and while we pretended to do various purse-digging things we picked up quite a few sound bites from our favorite fashion writer. We can tell you for one that she wasn't very thrilled about going to Fashion Fringe (which everyone buzzed about all week) and that she uses a PC in the media lab among the rest of us lowly bloggers and photographers.

When we're going to just throw up our arms and stop reporting on this all together we do not know...for old times sake, there's a new collaboration hitting stores in London. Former creative director for Balmain and right hand man to Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Giles Dufour, is launching a knitwear collab with Browns.

Suzy Menkes Gets Her Twenty Years of Pomp(adour) and Circumstance

>> Suzy Menkes's 1.7 million-plus words during her twenty years as fashion editor at the International Herald Tribune were commemorated on Saturday with a special video.

>> Suzy Menkes's 1.7 million-plus words during her twenty years as fashion editor at the International Herald Tribune were commemorated on Saturday with a special video. "You've made me cry . . . To earn a glowing review from you is the holy grail of fashion," John Galliano declared.  Anna Wintour, Franca Sozzani, Karl Lagerfeld and then some all honored the Samurai, Olivier Theyskens with his words as much as his pompadour hairdo — which apparently got a big laugh.  Even Marc Jacobs chimed in — but only with kind words, and no sticking out of the tongue.  But let's be honest — in the middle of show season, who would dally with such an influential reviewer?
