Christian Dior Channels Film Noir for Spring 2010

>> A soundtrack of heavy breathing, a telephone ringing, a gun-shot, and then screaming ladies kicked off the film noir-themed Christian Dior show.  Silhouettes of gangsters holding machine guns were projected against a derelict warehouse set swirled with dry ice smoke as Karlie Kloss opened.

John Galliano told Hilary Alexander he was inspired by archive photographs of Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogary in the front row at Dior shows: “She was a regular client of M. Dior and I loved the idea of taking that 1940s Hollywood glamour and making it more contemporary. And I liked the idea of the link between film as an illusion and the illusion of undressed dresses.”

The models' hair was coiffed like Bacall's, the shoes still had platforms — estimated to be 7" high — and the peekaboo lingerie was actually built in to the dresses. Naomi Campbell was expected to attend, but never showed, and Tanya Dziahileva finally made her first appearance this season on the catwalk.  But the iconic moment, judging by Tweets, was John Galliano's finale strut down the runway in fedora and trench coat with metal collar, complete with dry ice and explosions.

Paris Fashion Week

>> Jessica Stam Sits Out Paris Fashion Week Sick, Tanya Dziahileva To Finally Walk This Season —Toni Garrn made her first catwalk appearance this season today at Gareth Pugh, but we're still missing a number of models usually on the circuit: Catherine McNeil, Raquel Zimmermann, Sigrid Agren, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, and Tanya Dziahileva among them.  Word is it's possible some may be hitting the Paris catwalks, but it looks like a Tanya appearance is most likely out of the bunch.  Don't expect to see Jessica Stam, though, who's been going light this season as is: She's been sick for the past few days and decided to head back to New York.

Michael Kors

>> Models Missing from the New York Runways: An Update —With only one more day of New York Fashion Week to go, a number of top models still haven't set foot on a catwalk.  Anja Rubik finally appeared at Michael Kors this morning — so did Carmen Kass and Jacquetta Wheeler — but Catherine McNeil — who is supposedly booked all through the New York shows on another job — Toni Garrn, Lara Stone, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, Sigrid Agren — who's rumored not to be doing any shows this season — Tanya Dziahileva, Raquel Zimmermann, and Georgina Stojiljkovic are all totally MIA.  In other modeling news, Jessica Stam joined the increasingly large number of models bleaching their hair — she debuted the new hue today at Anna Sui.

Hussein Chalayan Keeps Expanding Under Puma's Wing, This Time With Signature Fall 2009 Campaign

>> Hussein Chalayan has yet to debut his first designs for PPR-owned Puma — they come out in the Fall — but he's definitely feeling the love from Puma's majority stake in his own company and the access to Gucci Group resources.  He said when his role as Puma creative director was first annouced in February 2008 that he hoped "this partnership will mean that my work will reach more people, both through designing for Puma and with the expansion of my own business," and it has — his collaboration with J.

Sara Ziff's Picture Me Documentary Uncovers Sexual Assault in the Modeling World

>> Over the course of five years, Sara Ziff snuck her ex-boyfriend Ole Schell into fashion shows, shoots, and parties so that he could film "without other people realizing it."   Sometimes he got thrown out, but they were able to collection hundreds of hours of footage along the way, which they edited down to produce Ziff's documentary, Picture Me, which exposes the dirty underbelly of modeling.

In it, the stories are hardly pretty.  Ziff told the Guardian about a 16-year-old model who complained to her agency when a 45-year-old photographer made a pass at her: "Her agency said she should have slept with him."  She captures another model talking about how weight is approached: "In castings, people have slapped my thigh, and I'm not in any sense overweight, I never have been.  I've been the same weight for a long time, but they'll slap your butt and be like 'Oooh, fat' in Italian or in French. 'It's too big here.'"

A Peek Backstage at the Chanel Cruise 2010 Show in Venice

>> Yesterday's Chanel Cruise spectacle opened on the Lido beach in Venice with a barefoot, becloaked Tanya Dziahileva in a tricorn hat, and was immediately followed by an afterparty at the nearby resort hotel for the guest list of 300 or so.  Lara Stone wandered, "looking for a boyfriend," according to Style.com's Derek Blasberg, and the crowd was overrun with sequin jackets.  Karl Lagerfeld held court on the terrace, grooving to the disco music, with a bodyguard (presumedly Sebastien Jondeau, who walked earlier in the show) "holding back the editors back from his young perfect people posse."

Afterward, Karl retired for a late night salmon dinner with a select few — among them Ingrid Sischy and Heidi Mount — in the basement of the hotel, which apparently turned out to be a dungeon, not a basement, as Lady Amanda Harlech pointed out.

Saks Fifth Avenue

>> THE MODELIZER —Coco Rocha has finally landed back in New York after her break from modeling — she showed up at Saks Fifth Avenue last night to fete the store's new contemporary space, DJed it up with Ali Stephens, Daul Kim, and Tanya Dziahileva, and perhaps even met her agency's newest, much-buzzed-about face, Diandra Forrest, who was also in attendance.

What's Going on with Tanya Dziahileva?

>> There have been a lot of big model-agency switcharoos lately, with both Agyness Deyn and Snejana Onopka moving to Women, but conspiracy theorists have a new model on their minds: Tanya Dziahileva. In the past few days, she has gone missing from her agency IMG's site; when you add that information to the fact that she left IMG's Milan branch for Why Not Models, and IMG's Paris branch for Marilyn, some are calling foul, especially since shedidn't walk New York Fashion Week because of a lost passport, but made it to Milan and Paris just fine. Was the lost passport an excuse because she didn't have New York representation?  Was she dropped by IMG, did she quit, or is her disappearance from the site all a mistake?*image: source

>> THE MODELIZER —Where's Tanya Dziahileva? Still in St. Petersburg, unfortunately. She lost her passport and has yet to apply for a new visa, so she won't be at New York Fashion Week at all, but she did get a new passport, so she'll hopefully be in Milan and Paris. [FWD (hard copy)]
