The Day Before

>> The second season of The Day Before, Loic Prigent's documentary series which follows six designers — Diane von Furstenberg, Donatella Versace, Alexander Wang, Narciso Rodriguez, Nina Ricci's Peter Copping, and Jeremy Scott — in the 36 hours leading up to their Fall 2010 show, premieres tomorrow night, Sept. 8, on the Sundance Channel at 10 pm EST with von Furstenberg, with one episode airing each night after that through Sept. 13.

Prigent is known for receiving unprecedented access into designers' inner sanctums — he captures von Furstenberg practicing yoga as she fits models, Wang in the midst of a "chiffon crisis," Narciso Rodriguez leaving his studio in a panic two hours before his show with two key looks unfinished, and Copping staging his first ever show for Nina Ricci. The new season premieres Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 10 PM. Prigent noted, “We explored the energy of New York with young labels like Alexander Wang, grandes dames like Diane von Furstenberg, energy and humor with Jeremy Scott, and couturelike precision with Narciso Rodriguez. In Paris, you see the sweetness and romanticism of Nina Ricci, and the extreme everything of Donatella Versace in Milan. They just launched Catwalk Countdown, a series of ten one-minute online videos highlighting designers like Erin Fetherston, Vena Cava, Lyn Devon, Chris Benz — Benz talks how he produces 98 percent of his collection within a two-block radius of his Manhattan studio, for instance — and now they're bringing back popular fashion documentarist Loic Prigent for a second season of his The Day Before series.

Prigent, who captured the likes of Sonia Rykiel, Proenza Schouler, Fendi, and Jean Paul Gaultier for the show's first season, is currently in New York, where he will film Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, and Jeremy Scott each in the 36 hours leading up to their shows.  Prigent has been granted "full access," he told The Cut, "[because] we are discreet . . . [so designers] forget we are even there."

>> Loic Prigent's The Day Before series, documenting the 48 hours before Proenza Schouler, Fendi, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Sonia Rykiel shows, doesn't air on the Sundance Channel until Sept. 9, but they've put up 11 clips total spanning the four segments, and the entire Fendi episode has leaked to YouTube — watch here.  A couple of favorite clips below: the first in which Karl Lagerfeld's muse Amanda Harlech yells for some music, initiating the Fendi employees' seasonal late night fashion show — one male staffer even wobbles the runway in vertiginous Fendi heels; the second in which Proenza Schouler's clearly nervous Jack McCullough — who yearns for a cheeseburger — and "fidgeting" Lazaro Hernandez are inclined to physically touch every look backstage before it goes out on the runway.  Ikram boutique' Ikram Goldman calls it "blessing" the garment.

I was bummed when Full Frontal Fashion, a fashion program focusing on New York Fashion Week, was canceled back in January. Now there's some light at the end of the tunnel — the Sundance Channel is reviving it in its own way. "For us, it’s not about the trendy — it’s just about this dramatic, entertaining and, above all, creative perspective," said general manager Sarah Barnett. Expect a mix of original television programming and Web content.

The Day Before is a four-part series that follows four designers — Sonia Rykiel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld for Fendi, and Proenza Schouler — in the 36 hours preceding their shows. As for the website, which launches Sept. 1, here's what you'll see: Patrick McMullan's video reports and a photo diary from the collections, and contributions from Lynn Yaeger, former Teen Vogue and Nylon fashion editor Aya Kanai, and Los Angeles Times editor Robin Sayers. The site will also feature a video and photo exhibition of the work of Bruce Weber.

>> Matt Tyrnauer may have gotten ahold of Valentino for The Last Emperor, and RJ Cutler of Anna Wintour for The September Issue, but it's Loic Prigent who has really taken the whole fly-on-the-wall fashion documentary concept by the horns these past few years.  He did Signe Chanel, a five-part series on the creation of Chanel's Fall 2004 couture collection, and the 2007 film Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton, which captures Marc waddling in pigeon costume and finding inspiration for a bag from a collection of pastel macaroons; both Signe Chanel and Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton have been uploaded to YouTube.

His latest project, announced back in June, is The Day Before, set to air for four consecutive nights starting Sept. 10 on the Sundance Channel.  Prigent tracks four design houses — Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel, Fendi, and Jean Paul Gaultier — in the 36 hours before their Fall 2009 ready-to-wear shows, with the exception of Gaultier, who is captured before his Fall 2009 couture show.
