The Row Resort 2014: The Old Man and the Sea

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen credited seafaring uniforms and a vintage photo of a fisherman as the inspiration for their Resort 2014 collection, which explains why it includes so many pieces that look hard-wearing and cozy.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen credited seafaring uniforms and a vintage photo of a fisherman as the inspiration for their Resort 2014 collection, which explains why it includes so many pieces that look hard-wearing and cozy.

But closer inspection reveals that these mostly casual pieces were cut from some highly luxurious materials. The yellow rain slicker that looks like it could withstand a torrential downpour and gale force winds is actually made from leather, so it's not waterproof at all. The brown and khaki jacket, which the house refers to as a windbreaker, comes with a detachable fur collar. And what looks like a simple knitted vest from behind turns out to be half made from red alpaca.

There are some nods to nautical functionality here as well. A few of the handbags in the collection hang from rope straps tied with sailor's knots, and a double-breasted navy blazer with what appear to be gold buttons actually closes with magnets.

CFDA Awards: Lily Aldridge

The 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards are under way, and Lily Aldridge was one of the first to arrive on the red carpet.

The 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards are under way, and Lily Aldridge was one of the first to arrive on the red carpet. Dressed in head-to-toe The Row, the Victoria's Secret model opted for a striking kind of glamour. Her cream-colored strapless gown — made dramatic by a kimono-like draping in the back — was embroidered with a subtle all-over floral print, and her red kitten heels were enhanced with voluminous ruffles. As for everything else? Aldridge kept it simple, wearing barely there gold jewelry and natural makeup. Are you a fan of her look?

The Row Fall 2013

Those Olsen twins sure know how to put on a show.
The Row Review | Fashion Week Fall 2013

Those Olsen twins sure know how to put on a show. In an Upper East Side townhouse decorated with antiques — not to mention scented candles, roaring fireplaces, giant vases of cherry blossoms, and silver platters of tiny macarons — the recent CFDA winners presented a Fall 2013 lineup for The Row that was so stunning, it caused more than one first-time attendee to sigh "now I get it" upon leaving.

Which is actually a pretty understandable thing, because the pieces the Olsens make are so subtle in their beauty that they have to be seen up close to be believed. The duo developed their own fabrics for the season, and by keeping the lines of their Eastern-tinged wrap jackets, kimono coats, and origami dresses structured and clean, those gorgeous fabrics could really shine. One seemingly simple ankle-length surplice dress with a built-in foulard, for example, became intoxicating upon closer inspection thanks to the subtle shimmer of its silk "vine" jacquard, while a V-neck top with wide, three-quarter-length sleeves was irresistible due to its impeccable geometric silk-wool cloque weave.

The Row Fall 2013 Runway

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's The Row Fall '13 show was one of quiet elegance.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's The Row Fall '13 show was one of quiet elegance. Set in an Upper East Side salon, the threadbare Persian rugs and scattered Asian-inspired midcentury and antique seating set the backdrop for meticulously tailored coats in heavyweight nappa with Persian lamb, gracefully cut tops in foulard silk jacquard and silk crepe de chine, sleek column jumpsuits in merino wool, and architectural skirts in scuba viscose and a vine flower silk jacquard. The strict black, white, eggshell, and taupe color palette was accented with auburn shoes and smooth, minimal calfskin and alligator top-handle bags that reflected the refinement and attention to detail the brand is known for.
