The First Full-Length Photos of Tom Ford's Spring 2011 Womenswear Debut; Plus — His Next Film Is a Comedy

Ford made a film of the show, and Terry Richardson was hired to snap pictures — both will appear on the relaunched Tom Ford website next month when the clothes are nearly in stores. And Ford plans to maintain the exclusivity in future seasons — while there will be no repeat of the launch show, which saw Beyonce, Julianne Moore, and Lauren Hutton walking — only magazine editors (no news reporters) will be allowed to view his Fall 2011 collection at the Ford London showroom.

Originally, Ford met with outside investors when pondering a return to womenswear, but he ultimately rejected them: “What I want is the freedom to say, I really like fashion and I’m going to come back my way and never have some corporate person say, ‘But you can’t do it that way.’ My goal is to be like Armani and Chanel.” He's also rejecting his former incarnations as a designer. The Gucci girl as he left her six years ago? “At this point? She’d be too trendy.” And he doesn't anticipate playing the red carpet game, with one exception: “I’ll wait to see who’s nominated for the Oscars. Then I will offer to dress one person.”

He is, however, still doing movies: "Now I’m shooting another. I’m writing the script — a comedy. I’m in the mood to have fun and smile."

Karl Lagerfeld — "People Think I'm On an Ego Trip But I'm Not"

>> The International Herald Tribune is hosting its 10th annual luxury conference in London, where Suzy Menkes grilled Karl Lagerfeld earlier today on his thoughts of himself, his fellow designers, and his legacy. A few highlights, below.

On who the real Karl Lagerfeld is: "I am a cocktail."

On the current Hermes situation: "If you don't want to be taken over, don't put your business in the public market. Stay private like Chanel."

On designing: "I love my job. I have no idea of what it means to take yourself seriously. You have to be detached."

On the pecking order at Chanel: "Nobody tells me what to do at Chanel . . . I am there to be used. I like to be used, but only in the way I think I should be used."

On his legacy: "I was the blueprint for Tom Ford at Gucci, Alber Elbaz at Lanvin . . ."

On ego: "People think I'm on an ego trip, but I'm not. I can get out of people what they want to express but can't."

On how he embraces the digital world: "If you are against 'digital' in the world of today, you are lost . . . I don't use computers so much — they do what your brain is meant to do. But they are beautiful."

On taking from the past to translate for the future: "if you want to revive something you can't do it with respect. That's the kiss of death . . . you can only build if you destroy . . . I have no archives, I keep nothing. Other people can do that for me. I like now."

On his longevity: "I never think of what's going on after me. I never think of what's next. I only think of the moment."

On the recent onslaught of Chanel films: "I don't like the movies about Coco Chanel."

For You, What Makes a Fragrance Masculine or Feminine?

I recently sampled Tom Ford's unisex Azure Lime Eau de Parfum ($190-$465), and while I couldn't quite put my finger on why, it skewed a bit more dude-like than anything else.

I recently sampled Tom Ford's unisex Azure Lime Eau de Parfum ($190-$465), and while I couldn't quite put my finger on why, it skewed a bit more dude-like than anything else. This got me to thinking: what makes a fragrance masculine or feminine anyway?

Packaging and marketing aside, generally speaking, women's scents tend to be lighter, sweeter, and are frequently found in the floral or oriental families. Men's scents tend to be strong, rich, woody, earthy, leatherish, herbaceous, and aromatic. Of course, other factors come into play in the universe of eau de what-have-you, like personal preference and the way a scent develops on the skin.

Speaking of the way a scent develops on the skin, it does make sense then that gendered fragrances tend to mimic the natural body odor or chemistry of a man or a woman. And as far as unisex scents go, fresh, citrusy scents tend to reign supreme in that category. Of course, there are all sorts of clichés and stereotypes in regards to male and female scents, but for you, what makes a fragrance masculine or feminine?

The First Photo Leaks from Tom Ford's Spring 2011 Womenswear Preview

>> Photos may have been verboten at Tom Ford's womenswear preview yesterday — with the exception of those taken by Terry Richardson — but a few have popped up, all headshots.

>> Photos may have been verboten at Tom Ford's womenswear preview yesterday — with the exception of those taken by Terry Richardson — but a few have popped up, all headshots. Even Cathy Horyn posted a few.

Ford is notorious for image control, but it's rumored that the image embargo wasn't for that reason alone: Richardson's photos are reportedly an exclusive for an all Tom Ford edited issue of Vogue Paris (likely the December/January 2011 issue, the issue that the magazine annually has a guest editor for). It makes sense, considering how close Ford and Carine Roitfeld have worked together in the past (and Roitfeld reportedly skipped shows yesterday because she was preparing for Ford's).

But Ford told the New York Times that he didn't allow pictures because fashion has become overexposed in recent years, in part because of the Internet: “I want fashion to be fun again, like it was in the ’60s. You couldn’t wait to get the clothes and put them on, and I think we’ve lost that.” He added that photos will be available on his web site in December, along with a short film of the show.

The clothes, which he began working on late last spring, will be in his stores in late January or February 2011. He expects them to be very expensive: $3,500 to $5,000 for a suit, around $4,500 for a tuxedo, and a gown could be $20,000.

Tom Ford's Womenswear Presentation Reportedly to Have Celebrity Models, But No Photos Will Be Released Until January

>> Lou Doillon isn't the only model of note in Tom Ford's womenswear relaunch preview on Sunday: The Daily reports that every model is a celebrity — Victoria Beckham and Beyonce Knowles are among those joining Doillon — and Ford is expected to walk the intimate group of guests through each look personally.

The entire thing is very hush-hush: only one photographer is allowed at the presentation — working directly under Ford — and photos aren't expected to be released until January — when the goods hit stores, in an effort to prevent counterfeit copies. Apparently everyone involved — from publicists to guests — have been required to sign confidentiality agreements.

UPDATE: Beckham is not partaking in the presentation, although Julianne Moore and Lauren Hutton reportedly are. [@jimshi809]
