Trendspotting: Juice Bar Cocktails

Remember last year's big bottled-juice trend?

Remember last year's big bottled-juice trend? Well, it appears to be moving beyond juice bars and into cocktail bars. At an increasing number of venues across the country, health junkies and boozehounds have a place to convene and enjoy their gin with fresh-pressed ginger.

At Soaked in Manhattan's Mondrian SoHo, guests can lounge on the rooftop with "orchard to bar" cocktails, such as the 100 Mile Margarita, made with apple, pear, pineapple, and wheatgrass juice. LA's Parisian-themed cocktail lounge Pour Vous offers a new take on carrot juice with pear eau de vie, and Verveine Velay Jaune.

We had a chance to sample the trend here in San Francisco at Nectar Wine Lounge, which has recently launched a juice-centric brunch with Thrive juicery. In lieu of mimosas and Bellinis, customers can choose between Day at the Spa (apple, cucumber, fennel, and mint), Pink Pearl (strawberry, pineapple, pear, mint), and True Blood (red beets and navel orange), all with Baron de Seillac sparkling wine. "It's a fun way to offer the benefits of fresh-pressed juices and the already well-known benefits of wine consumption," owner Chris Potter told us.

What do you think of the trend? Could you see yourself getting behind, say, a kale margarita anytime soon?

American Music Awards Trend Alert: Lush Eyelashes

A red carpet always calls for amped-up glamour, but the eyelashes at the 2012 American Music Awards were above and beyond.

A red carpet always calls for amped-up glamour, but the eyelashes at the 2012 American Music Awards were above and beyond. With loads of mascara and plenty of false lashes thrown in for good measure, three ladies made this look something to talk about. Always one for over-the-top style, Nicki Minaj donned heavy top lashes that brought a seductive edge to her appearance. Taking the mod look to modern times, Ginnifer Goodwin exaggerated her bottom lashes by clumping them together and adding multiple coats of mascara. And Ke$ha kept things even more alluring with fanned-out lower lashes that you could see across the room.

To nail the trend, reach for a lengthening mascara, such as Benefit They're Real! Mascara ($23), or pick up a pack of individual lashes, like these ones from Make Up For Ever ($16). Whichever method you choose, you'll be sure to make a showstopping statement.

Trend Alert: Two-Textured Hair

If you're constantly trying to decide between wavy or straight hair, you're in luck.

If you're constantly trying to decide between wavy or straight hair, you're in luck. Lately, scores of famous faces have been stepping out with hair that straddles the texture line: straight, sleek hair on top slowly meandering into soft waves. Mindy Kaling, Keke Palmer, and Sophia Bush are all fans of this hybrid style. It's great for everyday wear, but can also be amped up for a glamorous, formal event.

To get this easy, texture-heavy look, mist your hair with a thermal spray such as Dove Thermal Replenishment Spray ($5) and then dry it with a round brush. Take a flat iron and smooth it over the top portion of your hair, from about your roots to the bottom of your ears. To achieve the waves, you can either curl your hair with your flat iron or use a 1.5-inch curling iron on just the ends. Keep the look in place with a good holding hair spray, and you'll never have to choose between two textures again.

We're Feeling Fall's Camouflage Trend — Can You See Why?

There's no doubt that the military trend has legs — it has steadily survived from season to season with nothing more than simple tweaks along the way.
Best Camouflage Clothes For Fall 2012

There's no doubt that the military trend has legs — it has steadily survived from season to season with nothing more than simple tweaks along the way. This Fall in particular, we're seeing all camouflage everything: a not-so-subtle nod to army influences that always manage to look edgy, sophisticated, or feminine, depending on your styling choices. Check out some of our suggestions below, then click through to shop some chic camouflage pieces that will help you stand out rather than fade into the background.

  • For an edgier look, pair your camouflage jeans with a worn-in rocker tee and leather jacket. Add biker boots or studded jeans — and just see if anyone tries messing with you.
  • Camo can look cool and girlie in a snap — throw a printed utility jacket over your flirtiest white dress then throw on pretty heels and jewelry. It's an unexpected look that's totally worth wearing out on the town.
  • The military trend can definitely be office-appropriate; try tucking a crisp button-down blouse into a camouflage skirt or layering a camo dress under a fitted blazer. Cinch the look at your natural waist with a leather belt for a sleek silhouette.

With our Fall investment bag wish list all set, we're zeroing in on the season's other big accessory trends — starting with jewelry (and how to get it for less). First up is Fall's hard-to-ignore natural world trend. We saw a bevy of gorgeous baubles that seemed to draw inspiration from Mother Nature, and each had its own exquisite touch. Whether it was Chanel's rough-cut mineral bangles, Gucci's flirty butterfly chokers, or Giambattista Valli's over-the-top gold leaf necklace, designers were undoubtedly inspired by the great outdoors. Flora and fauna themes crept into necklaces and rings, and insects also played a big part in the trend, with Oscar de la Renta and Prabal Gurung incorporating buggy bits into their collections. We've rounded up 23 of the prettiest pieces for Fall that are giving Mother Nature a run for her money — but all happen to clock in at under 50 bucks. Click through below to shop them now.

Trendspotting: Unorthodox Savory Cocktails

Lately, it seems as though every restaurant is introducing drinks with the most unlikely of savory ingredients.

Lately, it seems as though every restaurant is introducing drinks with the most unlikely of savory ingredients. We recently noted sweet heat making an appearance in cocktails, and there are, of course, those classic cocktails whose seemingly odd savory pairings actually work miraculously (a dirty martini and spicy Bloody Mary come to mind). But a number of newer concepts with less-than-conventional drink ingredients — beef, bacon, vinegar, and whole egg, to name a few — are also poised to make their mark.

San Francisco's Fifth Floor restaurant serves a Wild Goose Chase cocktail that is rimmed with foie gras powder rim and garnished with a foie gras-stuffed prune. Chicagoland area-based Vie offers The Ecto Shrub, a green cocktail whose chief ingredient is a vinegar-based okra syrup. Savory spices are branding cocktails, too: at Scott & Co. in Tuscon, AZ, the bar serves a whole slew of unusual cocktails, including the Grillo Canción, flavored with cumin syrup and celery bitters.

I'm curious to know what you think. Is there room on the menu for a few more oddities that could eventually turn to classic favorites? Do you see these cocktails making menu history on their way to becoming classics, or will the fad burn out quickly?
