In The Showroom: Trovata Spring 09

Trovata's Spring 09 collection had such an abundance of buffalo check that from across the showroom floor it almost looked like a Commes des Garcon diffusion line.

Trovata's Spring 09 collection had such an abundance of buffalo check that from across the showroom floor it almost looked like a Commes des Garcon diffusion line. This is meant, of course, as a compliment--we think it's a universally pleasing pattern. Of the buffalo check offerings, our favorite were a pair of trousers (left) that had a similar low-slung silhouette to Catherine Holstein's version over on the other side of the room. Other than that the Trovata collection was full of signature staples; oxford shirt dresses for the girls and blazers for the guys. One fantastic piece up-close was a thin maxi-length shirtdress that the pictures just don't do justice. That's no fault of Trovata; there are some garments that just look like a potato sack until you slip them on and move around a little bit. After all, far more offensive are the garments that only look nice on the hanger.

Buses, Buffalo Check, and Blazers for Trovata Spring 2009

Buses, Buffalo Check, and Blazers for Trovata Spring 2009

>> There are always a couple of things you can expect from John Whitledge at Trovata: blazers, and plenty of Ivy League appeal. For Spring 2009, both expectations were met — a solid palette of navy and white kept the East Coast aesthetic going, but there were plenty of unexpected elements, too — the derriere-skimming white double-breasted jacket and sequin hot pants come to mind.

Guests entered through an old white school bus that John converted to run off vegetable oil — and will be "hitting the road" with: "Details to come." Models dipped the soles of their crisp white Keds in paint before stepping on the runway, providing a varicolored collage of footsteps on the white canvas catwalk as they walked. But in the end, it always comes down to the clothes — and those long, sheer shirtdresses were looking pretty good.

Trend Alert: Nautical Stripes

There comes a time in every trend's life when it's no longer a trend and thus forth a fashion staple.

There comes a time in every trend's life when it's no longer a trend and thus forth a fashion staple. Nautical stripes reached that point hella long ago. When Coco Chanel first experimented with them they may have been seen as a flighting thing. But who doesn't want to channel feelings of the beach, the ocean, the waves? Looks like Vanessa Minnillo (in Sonia by Sonia Rykiel) and Coco have something in common — oh, and the rest of us lovers of fashion!

Alice Ritter and Trovata in La Belle Dame sans Merci

In today's exclusive Coutorture editorial we've pulled garments from the Spring 08 collections of Alice Ritter and Trovata.

In today's exclusive Coutorture editorial we've pulled garments from the Spring 08 collections of Alice Ritter and Trovata. The two brands, though seemingly dissimilar, are on common ground in terms of their contemporary style and appeal to twenty-something's with a penchant for smart casual dress. From Ritter, we've covered her Spring 08 collection as well as her Fall 08 presentation during New York Fashion Week (it was one wild party). In our video, we spoke with Ritter, who attributes the Fall 08 season to have been influenced by legendary rougue Serge Gainsbourg. From Trovata, we popped into the showroom to shoot Fall 08, an exclusive Coutorture editorial that made us want to move upstate and start a family (only kidding!). It, as always, had an East Coast prepster aesthetic that pulled at our Cape Cod-loving heartstrings. The two brands appear again in today's editorial, La Belle Dame sans Merci, so, consider yourself an expert.
